without a magnetic field, ferrofluid behaves just like a liquid

just ferrofluid,a magnet and a cobalt blue glass

Ferrofluid magnetic liquid.

I used a small bowl, poured some of the liquid in it and then put a magnet underneath.

Zoomed in all the way with the 7Hi (7x) in macro mode and used a +1, +2, and a +4 lenses as well. No tripod was used, hence the picture was a little shakey. Manual focus, and flash.

Playing with ferrofluids at the Ithaca Sciencenter.

Here is a screw in the ferrofluid, with the magnet beneath the plate. the ferrofluid on the end of the screw shows how the magnetic field lines flow from the screw.

A ferrofluid is a liquid which becomes strongly polarised in the presence of a magnetic field. The smaller ring on the right is ferrofluid covering an electromagnet.

Here the plate with ferrofluid is directly on top of the magnet.
