FEC GP38-2 511 traverses the - thanks to a rainy few weeks - quite overgrown lead to the Savage Services transload, the railroad's primary customer on Miami's downtown job, toward the end of the crew's shift. Hialeah, FL

The candy stripes have almost completely disappeared on the Florida East Coast Railroad. The last locomotives to wear the classic stripes were the fleet of GP38-2s, which currently amount to only five units. Out of those, two have been rebuilt and repainted and two more had the nose stripes painted over. FEC 511 is the very last unit to carry the "candy cane stripes" on the nose, and is seen here crossing the Jax Drawbridge with a transfer to Moncrief yard. FEC 510 is the only unit that still has stripes on the long hood, the stripes on the others, including 511, are completely bleached out and worn off on the long hood. Great to finally catch the 511 as it has seemingly been evading photographers as there are far less pictures of this unit than any other GP38-2 on the FEC.

For several weeks this winter I'd been waking up early and checking local groups and chats for news of special moves or power in the Jacksonville area. On this Friday- December 5th, I didn't have that energy and slept well past sunrise. Of course it was on this particular morning, that a message of retro FEC 511 and 411 sat on my devices long before I woke up, observed far too late to have anything but enragement value. More despairing than optimistic for results, I decided to try anyway- starting a 45 minute drive when the train was surely less than 30 minutes from St. Augustine. I was so sure that I'd missed him that I didn't even rush, yet somehow I kept closing in on St Augustine without him blasting past me the other way. In disbelief as I pulled in to this spot- I could see the train had just rounded the curve and crossed the popular San Sebastian River bridge spot! With no seconds to spare- I scaled a tree to get elevation over the flooded marsh and captured the impossible!

So why did it take the train so long to move just a few miles? A facebook comment would later reveal the train was "traveling slower at a speed 'as efficient as possible' to save fuel", with only 600 gallons or so remaining around Dorena. I guess when you try for a shot, just stay commited because you never know. ;)

With another day's work done, FEC local 960 rolls south through Ft. Lauderdale. The train is only minutes away from yarding their train in East Storage. FEC 511, a GP38-2 built for the FEC in April of 1978, has the distinction of being the only unit left on the roster painted in the full "Going Places" scheme. Sister GP38-2's 508 and 510 have had their noses repainted solid blue and only retain the logo and stripes on the long hood ends.

Back at the time of this photo, train 960 was the weekday local that ran north from Ft. Lauderdale to work the industries along the Pompano Market Spur. To negate a run-around at Pompano, 960 operated push pull. They ususally left FTL before well before sunrise and returned anytime between 10am and noon depending on work. Nowadays, local 945 out of West Palm Beach handles the Pompano traffic.

Lime Nuggets walks away from our rented Jeep in frustration after getting it stuck axle-deep in some soft Florida sand. In the background, a Florida East Coast geep works the intermodal yard in Fort Pierce. We didn't realize it at the time, but we picked a 2 wheel drive Jeep Liberty. Really? A 2WD Jeep? What is the world coming to? After realizing the subdued (the nice way to put it) nature of this Jeep, we started to refer to it as a Jeep Librarian.
