“The ship was quiet. No one spoke. The meters which had flashed over to their limit had settled back and now read zero once more – all save those indicating the power stored in the giant coil. The stars that shown brilliantly in a myriad of colors about them were gone, then suddenly they saw space about glow: then there was a vast cloud of stars before them, but strange, violet stars. Some, however, were a pale green. Directly before them was one green star that glowed big and brilliant, then rapidly it faded and shrank to a tiny dot, a distant star! There was a strange tenseness about them. They seemed held in a strange, compelled silence.
“Arcot reached forward again – ‘Cutting off power, Morey!’ – the red tumbler snapped back. Again space seemed to be charged with a vast surplus of energy that rushed in from all about, coursing through their bodies, producing a tingling feeling. Then again space was rocking in a grey cloud about them – the stars suddenly leapt out at them in blazing glory again.
‘Well, it worked once!’ breathed Arcot, with a sigh of relief. ‘Lord, I made some false calculations, though I hope I didn’t make any more! Morey – how was it? I used only one sixteenth power.’ “

“Islands of Space” is generally credited with introducing the concepts of “hyperspace” and the “warp drive” to science fiction. (So, Star Trek got it wrong in identifying Zefram Cochrane as the inventor:-) The story concerns the adventures of four heroes: Arcot, Morey, Wade and Fuller. They put together a ship that can travel faster than light and they hightail it out into space.
The story was published in book form in 1957 by Fantasy Press, and a paperback edition was put out by Ace Books in 1966. John W. Campbell, Jr. went on to become the editor of “Astounding Science Fiction” from late 1937 until his death in 1971 and was part of the Golden Age of Science Fiction. He wrote super-science space opera under his own name and stories under his primary pseudonym, Don A. Stuart. [Source: Wikipedia]

Just back from a long weekend on Aurora Prime. The views of Saturn were STUNNING. Accommodation was lovely, only slightly spoiled by a glitching sanitary droid. Overall, couldn't recommend it more.

“Faster than Light” is a sequel to Vincent’s “Venus Liberated,” which appeared in the Spring, 1929 issue of “Amazing Stories Quarterly.” After high adventures on Venus, Ralph and Margaret Prescott had settled into a mundane life on Earth. Within a year that monotony had become like a boat anchor, holding down their lives. They hungered for the adventure and thrill of outer space.
Then one day things changed dramatically. An old Venusian pal, Steve Gillette, had come back to Earth with important news. Venus’ precious energy resources were dwindling to dangerously low levels. To combat this issue, their friends Teddy Crowley and Professor Timkin had developed a fantastic spacecraft that ran on a new kind of atomic power. Their mission was to travel to the Procyon system to gather the radium that would help power these new atomic engines and solve the energy crisis on Venus. And soon they were all traveling across the void in this new, revolutionary spaceship – a ship that would carry them at speeds faster than light! One of the 'givens' in current scientific thinking is that nothing can travel faster than light. But with all that we don't know about the universe, this seems like an awfully large assumption to make. After all, all we have to do is to fold the fabric of space and boom, we can step from one side of the galaxy to the other in an instant.. We just don't know how - yet..
And by the way, astronomers have recently spotted a galaxy 13.1 billion light years from us, which is remarkable, since the universe is only supposed to be roughly 14 billion years old. And as someone pointed out in the comments on this article, if you spin the telescope around and look, you will probably find an equally distant galaxy, which begs the question.. How can the universe contain two galaxies 28 billion light years apart, when it has only existed 14 billion years?
I think maybe Mr Pratchett is right.. When the light gets there - wherever 'there' is, the dark is already there, waiting for it..
When watching Battlestar Galactica, I frequently need to hit the "back 5 seconds" button on the TiVo remote and turn on closed captioning; the scenes are so realistically filmed (and mic'd) that it's sometimes hard to understand what the characters are saying.
In this week's episode ("Epiphanies"), there's a scene where Starbuck and Apollo discover a little e-book inside a sleeper agent's personal belongings. I couldn't quite hear what they said, so I did the rewind-CC trick; in-between the lines actually uttered, there's a line that's in the captioning but cut from the final dialogue:
"It's a schematic to an FTL drive."
The information isn't crucial; a couple of scenes later, Apollo explains to the strike team that they're going to search the FTL system for explosives. But I thought it was odd that an excised line of dialogue might survive in this way.
A theoretical concept called the Alcubierre drive achieves faster-than-light travel by contracting space in front of a spacecraft and expanding space behind it. It works a bit like the classic “tablecloth and dishes” party trick: The spaceship sits atop the tablecloth of spacetime, the drive pulls the fabric around it, and the ship is situated in a new place relative to the fabric. However, such a drive requires exotic matter or manipulation of dark energy, which are not yet proven to exist or be feasible. Challenges with quantum gravity and causality may also invalidate the drive.
Another possible propulsion system that can alter the geometry of space is the nano electrokinetic thruster, which is based on the principle of electro-osmosis. This device allows for a high specific impulse and high thrust-to-power ratio, as well as a high final velocity. However, this is still a theoretical concept and has not been demonstrated experimentally.
Other ongoing research projects aim to develop novel rocket engines for deep-space exploration, such as the plasma thruster which has been demonstrated in a laboratory setting and could potentially enable faster and more efficient space travel. [Sources: NASA and Wikipedia]
