One of the 'givens' in current scientific thinking is that nothing can travel faster than light. But with all that we don't know about the universe, this seems like an awfully large assumption to make. After all, all we have to do is to fold the fabric of space and boom, we can step from one side of the galaxy to the other in an instant.. We just don't know how - yet..
And by the way, astronomers have recently spotted a galaxy 13.1 billion light years from us, which is remarkable, since the universe is only supposed to be roughly 14 billion years old. And as someone pointed out in the comments on this article, if you spin the telescope around and look, you will probably find an equally distant galaxy, which begs the question.. How can the universe contain two galaxies 28 billion light years apart, when it has only existed 14 billion years?
I think maybe Mr Pratchett is right.. When the light gets there - wherever 'there' is, the dark is already there, waiting for it..
