WHAT IS EXPLORE?

"Explore is a Flickr feature with the intent of showing you 'some of the most awesome photos on Flickr.' Photos are automatically selected by computer according to a secret algorithm called Interestingness. The top 500 photos ranked by Interestingness are shown in Explore.

Flickr has stated that many factors go into calculating Interestingness: a photo's tags, how many groups the photo is in, views, favorites, where click-throughs are coming from, who comments on a photo and when, and more. The velocity of any of those components is a key factor. For example, getting 20 comments in an hour counts much higher than getting 20 comments in a week.

Is Explore a showcase for the top Flickr photographers? No. It's for photo viewers, not the photographers. It exists so that, at any moment, anyone who wants to view interesting photos can go to Explore and have a reasonable chance of seeing something interesting.

Does that imply that photographs not in Explore are uninteresting? Of course not. Many wonderful photos are uploaded to Flickr each day not selected for Explore. But, to serve its purpose, Explore only includes a small sampling of all of the photos on Flickr, showing photos from many different people to create a diverse selection."

Did you know: Fawns have an average of 294-306 spots? As you can see in the photo, they start in a row along each side of the spine. Fawns are born with spots because it's great at camouflaging them from predators like wolves, coyotes, and bears. They will lose their spots as they get older and don't rely on hiding anymore. They usually lose their spots around October when their winter coats start coming in. Have you ever stumbled upon a fawn in the woods and almost missed it from their camouflage?

Explore Accolades (Auszeichnungen) and FAQs (Fragen und Antworten)

Earlier this year, Flickr rebuilt the infrastructure that powers our beloved Explore page. Explore features about 500 exemplary images from across Flickr every day, highlighting photos that have caught the attention of the Flickr community. In rebuilding the tooling that powers Explore, we wanted to make sure it features a wide array of Flickr members, and that the images being highlighted represent great quality and community engagement.

Today, we want to share some exciting data on Explore and celebrate some impressive accolades with our community.

NEW

Why do I see photos with fewer faves or comments or views than mine on Explore?

The images featured in Explore aren’t necessarily the ones that gathered the most views, faves, or comments. We try to weigh in the quality of those actions over quantity. The timing of when you posted also plays a role.

Does adding my photo to groups help my chances of getting into Explore?

NO, but

===================>>

Adding your photos to on-topic groups is a great way to connect with other Flickr members interested in the same kind of photography that you do. It is also a great way to build community and interaction around your work, thus improving your chances of getting featured!

legends are:

Who picks the images for the Explore showcase?

Selections for Explore are made by a math equation. This math equation (called an algorithm) calculates a score based on how many views, faves and comments an images gets over a period of time.

The better the score the higher an image gets placed in the Explore list. Faves are heavily weighted in the equation and are far more important than comments. This score is often referred to as the "interestingness" factor of an image

FAQ

A website FAQ asks:

What is there to do at Redfish Lake?

Relax and enjoy the scenery! Rent a boat from the Marina to explore the lake on your own. Sunbathe on the sandy beach. Hike: there are plenty of trails around to lead you to gorgeous backcountry. Saddle up at the Redfish Corrals. Stop by the Redfish Lake Visitor Center. Eat a hearty meal in the restaurant. Sip a cocktail in the lounge. Gaze at the Milky Way in the crystal clear night sky. Fish a nearby stream.

While I did not do most of the leisurely stuff described above, I did get to gaze in wonderment at the Milky Way in a really dark sky area. I had wanted to shoot a panorama of tracked longer focal length shots for some time. A well known astrophotographer Eric Benedetti shoots spectacular stacked Milky Way panoramas. He also shoots them mostly in this area which gave me the motivation to try something similar. This was shot the night before the Great American Eclipse from the nearby Stanley Lake.

I used a star tracker to gather more star light than I could without a tracker. For the ground portion, the tracker was turned off. A total of 30 exposures were then stitched into a panorama. I used a 55mm lens which is more commonly used for portraits. Apples to apples, a longer lens gathers more light than a wide angle lens. (You can read about Clear Aperture here : www.clarkvision.com/articles/nightscapes/)

My biggest challenge with this panorama is blending the sky and ground parts like it would be in one large wide angle shot. Thanks to John Burge for the pointers. John shoots some fantastic longer length panos (85mm and above). Do check out his work..

The peaks which frame the lake at its south end are

· Mount Heyburn at 10,229 ft (3,118 m) on the Right

· Grand Mogul at 9,733 feet (2,967 m) on the left

From Wikipedia, "Leake Street (also known as the Banksy Tunnel) is a road tunnel in Lambeth, London where graffiti is tolerated regardless of the fact that it is against the law. The street is about 300 metres long, runs off York Road and under the platforms and tracks of Waterloo station.

The walls are decorated with graffiti, initially created during the Cans Festival organised by Banksy on 3–5 May 2008. The festival ran again on the August Bank Holiday weekend 2008.

While the Eurostar terminal was at Waterloo, the road was open for through vehicular traffic. On 14 November 2008 ownership of the road passed from Eurostar to Network Rail and through traffic was restricted to pedestrians.

Prior to the 1920s the street was known as York Street."

FAQ

Some FAQs.

Q. Where do you live?

A. South Africa.

Q. Can we meet/chat?

A. Sorry, not interested. Some say that makes me rude, but if valuing how I spend my time is rude, then I'm happy to be rude.

Q. Do you have a Twitter/Snapchat/whatever account?

A. I'm too old to use Snapchat, and Twitter is just horrible. And I have anxiety about interacting online, so really I spend as little time interacting online as possible.

Q. Do you have a Patreon/PayPal?

A. I'd feel awkward accepting money from strangers. Especially when those strangers have expectations I'm not comfortable with.

Q. Are you man?? .

A. Yes.

Q. Why don't you go out?

A. This is a private hobby. But also, an anxiety disorder. And this sort of thing is less socially acceptable where I live.
