L-CHI105 heading through Mazon with a very welcomed Santa Fe 40-2 leader and two more 40-2s trailing in H1 & H3. There were about 10 people gathered down by the elevator for this train.

A BNSF grain train waiting for departure from the CGB grain loop that is served by the NS on the Kankakee Line after loading earlier in the day. Once this train is crewed it will head to Streator for interchange back to the BNSF. For the past handful of months, the BNSF has been serving this elevator and one outside of Kankakee multiple times a week with unit grain trains.

I just happened to drive to Bourbonnais earlier in the day and saw it sitting there after finishing loading, so I figured it would be worth the short 15-minute drive back from Mazon later on in the evening to get some exposures of the Exec Mac. Due to lack of PTC this mac became a nose-in DPU once the train left the loop the next day.

A Tennessee Central Railway Museum excursion heading out of the city for Watertown, TN from Nashville. This was a wine tasting excursion that was being hosted by DelMonaco Winery. I just happened to be in town on this weekend & saw they were running an excursion out of town on Saturday morning and I’m glad I went to check it out because this was an impressive train set!

D36 heading South on the Bloomington District with two SP SD40M-2s in the trail that are bound for a leasing company out in Ohio.

Nothing says “Illinois” more than cornfields, trains, and specifically the Illinois Central! IC 1000 is seen here leading a cut of stone cars South from Limestone, IL back towards the Herscher Branch wye just South of here to then head East to the mainline of Mid-America the “Chicago Subdivision.” Fall is coming upon us quickly in Illinois and the fields are about ready for harvest. Let it begin!

Didn’t have time to setup to include the code-line so this will have to do!

Job 27, the mini train, with 3 geeps----->> CNW 4410, CNW 5529 and CNW 4406. This train usually ran at night, but every now and then it would be off schedule. This was a neat operation that the UP was most likely the one to terminate it. Today, the tracks are all gone and just a different color asphalt is the only evidence that tracks crossed First street.

LSF54A headed North on the former GM&O.

L537 from Kirk Yard making the slow crawl through downtown as they cross 16th St. I was leaving the White Sox game and heard these guys were at Kensington so I headed over to 41st St and here to grab them. A nice added bonus after a White Sox walk-off win!

Q-CHISTO nearing Lorenzo where they will tie this train down. This train ran from BNSF Corwith Yard outside of downtown Chicago to BNSF Lorenzo Yard outside of Coal City, Illinois. This Santa Fe GP60 and a BNSF H4 SD40-2 led stacks on Santa Fe rails for nearly 50-miles. This was crazy to see.

NS received a train from IC at Tololo which became 16K. This day's manifest had two IC SD40's, 6058 and 6056. The NS conductor was friendly and was about to board this train moving around the wye. The Wabash searchlights were still protecting the NS/IC diamond. An IC train was shoving back light power, after setting out a couple of cars in town from their train.

YCHC105 from Western Avenue Yard grabbing their loads of steel from the siding after working Sims Metal in Chicago on the Lumber District. This was my first time shooting the Lumber District, I got to play with my new Tamron 24-70 f2.8 lens, and it was a Santa Fe GP50. That’s a win, win, & another win in my book!

H-LAUSPO pulling into Livingston where they will sit and wait for the MRL 841 local to depart and for a set of helpers to attach to the rear to attack the hill into Bozeman.

A trio of ICs bringing A407 North as they pass by the Monee reservoir. IC 1036 & 1027 brought this train North from Effingham and picked up IC 3138 in Otto which was dropped by the Kankakee local.

CN L565 roars over the Catfish Creek bridge near Dubuque, IA with a trio of fallen flag power - GTW 5856, GTW 4914, and IC 6250!

Turning and burning around the popular curve coming into Lee, Illinois on the Aurora Sub as RCHI456 heads back West for Rochelle.

L-CHI105 headed West on the former Santa Fe Transcon in Mazon, Illinois. This ATSF GP60 is looking right at home here on home rails passing by the old elevator in downtown Mazon. Unfortunately, this is about the best classic scene you can get anymore on the Chillicothe Sub.

CN L553 headed back towards Otto from the quarry in Limestone off of the CN Herscher Branch in Central Illinois.

Burlington Northern did some experimenting with their standard scheme, here #241 with BN2100 and BN6318, has two examples of the variation they tried.

WLE train 291 from Akron, OH to Hartland, OH makes a last light appearance in Medina, OH. This is where they’ll make a stop to do some work before proceeding West. Which is what caused this to be the last shot in this last light! I can officially mark shooting one of these off the list.

A GP20U originally built for the ATSF in 1961, now apart of the Fort Smith Railway in Arkansas. The Ft. Smith Railway is a Pioneer Rail company. Here they are working the Yaffe Iron & Metal Company on one of the very many rainy days of this trip.

CNW ran a work train eastbound on the Geneva sub during fall color. This was back before the railroads went to contractors for most of their maintenance. This high hood GP7 looks good in CNW's latest and last paint scheme.

Southbound looking thru the 135mm lens.

On my birthday CN decided to run L521 from Kirk Yard to Joliet with EJE 667 leading on home rails. I haven’t seen an EJE SD38 out on the road in forever. This was a very nice birthday present to grab on my way to Cheesecake Factory for Lunch!

YCHC105 headed back to Western Ave Yard on the Lumber District in Chicago.

This was an ecursion out of Louisville Kentucky to Huntingburg Indiana. It was supposed to feature SOU #4501, but the FP's where placed in service for some reason or another. The three units pulled the excursion to the top of the grade, and came back light several hours later.

A duo of Lake Superior & Ishpeming C30-7s lead the 1500 Tilden job back towards their yard in Eagle Mills after a run to the Tilden mine.

Soo Line train #887, empty Weston coal for BN, with ATSF 5201, BN 7111 and BN 6927. Long before the BNSF, Santa Fe occasionally pooled with BN power, seen here looking good in later afternoon summer light. 3 SD40-2's were common power in 1991 on BN Weston trains.

Manifest train, CHME, has a pair of newer SD70's---->> 1009 and 1019. The IC was 100% EMD and had enough juice with EMD to obtain a "variation" from their stock SD70M model. Three railroads got the SD70, IC,NS and Conrail.

After 35 miles of traveling through flatlands between Deming and Hurley, the landscape begins to change around the Southwestern Railroad's work train as they enter a long disused section of track that used to lead to the Santa Rita mine and Fierro, NM. With no customers remaining on the line, SW has been running bi-weekly work train to collect ties and rail for a siding project near Deming, closer to their interchange with UP. In line with the terriory and trackage's history, two ATSF GP30 on SW's roster are still in ATSF Bluebonnet colors, providing power for today's work train on the old Santa Fe branch.

Loaded ore train, NT400, has three big EMD's for power. It was always so cool to hear notch 8 EMD echoing off the bluffs. Power 9285,9264,8119. One has to wonder, if BNSF didn't happen, what would the BN of today look like?

After just finishing shooting CN 3115 (BCOL HU) down in Peoria & Pekin, I shot up North to Chillicothe in hopes of grabbing this in time and it all worked out perfectly. Didn’t even wait 5 minutes and he was held up for about an hour prior by Z trains. One of the few and far between rewarding & fun days of railfanning.

UP 6706, ex-CNW 8804 and still proudly wearing CNW livery with the exception of a few patches, races westbound into Blairstown, IA.

The MRL 841 local departing Livingston Yard for home base in Bozeman. BNSF 681 is seen pulling up in the background with a H-LAUSPO. They would have to wait for helpers to attach before they would attack Bozeman Pass behind the 841.

My morning favorite, Mail 8, has cleared the large curve out of Elkhart and is in notch 8 to get up to track speed. The Chicago Line still had most of the NYC signal hardware intact yet in 1998, and the intermediate MP417 block is no exception as NYC bracket signals stand proud. Power ------>>> CR 5622, CR 6140 and LMS 735.

#561 with a four pack of SD60's------->>>> 6026,6030,6029,6013. This is along the River sub and is passing an antique grain elevator, now gone. The only time I got a solid set of 4 vanilla 60's.
