I last visited this lighthouse 15 years ago, it was an f-stopping moment when I realized that.
As I took this photo I started reflecting on my journey as a hobbyist in those 15 years; whether I've improved; whether I have understood aperture noise and shutter speed; whether I use that knowledge when observing the scene and environment; whether I actually stop and compose a photo instead of relying on spray-and-pray as a fallback; whether I process photos more tastefully instead of 'whatever works'.
The answer, I concluded, was a resounding 'lol'.

We went a'driving up to the mountain last weekend in the hopes of snowy slopes perfect for a bit of sledding. That was to be followed by a snowy trek through a forest looking for this year's tree to decorate (and photograph). Much to our surprise the snowy wilderness that had greeted us just a couple weeks prior had given way to bare hills. We drove up through Government Camp, then on to Trillium Lake with nary an inch or two of collected snow on the ground. It was still incredibly pretty thanks to a low-lying cloud bank that was freezing to the trees and coating them in a rime of ice. Even my old fallback location of White River was nowhere near white enough. So we backtracked, stopping briefly at the Barlow Road trail to wander its frozen forests and put our eye on some good tree candidates before driving back toward Government Camp and making the turn up to Timberline Lodge. At the start of the road up we were still ensconced in cloud, without a peek of blue sky above us. But as we traveled up and up and around and up we broke out of the clouds into a clear, sunny day. It was at least four stops brighter up there than where we had left. At this point the day was dwindling so the plan was to kill the last hour or so before driving back down to the Barlow Road once full dark had crept into the lowlands. As our luck had it, we parked just as the last light of the sun was glancing of Hood's slopes. I had a borrowed Fuji G617 with me (mine is currently back at the camera doctor) and a roll of JCH Street Pan. I had figured, why not shoot this film it has been awhile. And of course, one nice thing about the Fuji G617 is you are never stuck with a roll of film for long given you get only four shots a roll. In this case, the camera I was testing gave me three shots since it decided to not stop at the first frame like it was supposed to and wouldn't have stopped at the second either if I had not been minding it and noted the aberrant behavior. So this became one of those three images. In fact, the other shots were also of this mountain at this time, from slightly different positions. I don't normally bracket my shots with this camera quite so much but the scene with the light was gorgeous and even if the shots were a bit redundant, or only slightly differing, I figured it was well worth having a couple photos of this moment. The light eventually faded, as light always does, and we packed up and headed back down into a dark forest for some Christmas Tree photos. But those pictures and that story are for another post on another day.

Experience after a week there: The ducks down there only tend to destroy a photograph, if a rare class 232 ever happens to haul any train. And btw: 10 Minutes after sunset @16:29h, on a day w/o any sun at that ... F2.5 ISO1250 1/160 I know only one single lens capable of that: Nikkor 35mm 1.8G. HOWEVER: These coal trains are in the process of being phased out as we speak, but were not Ludmilla operated by default for about two decades (only in extremely rare circumstances as a fallback in case none of their three Class66 were operational)

Decided to bust out the old telescope last night and do some deep space imaging, been a while since I used it and my bigger mount. Of course I'm on call at work which means I can't travel far, have to stay within cell range and be able to get in to work within an hour. So I headed up to my fallback shooting location, Rockport Reservoir. Got up there, spent an hour setting everything up, went to start up my tablet and begin alignment and then I noticed...I was missing the bluetooth dongle for my wireless keyboard and mouse. The stupid tablet touchscreen keyboard won't allow you to use specific key commands in combination, commands I need to do the alignment and get my target in the field of view. So I spent another hour looking for the dongle, realizing it wasn't going to be found, and trying everything I knew to get the alignment to work. No dice, almost decided to pack it up, but instead I did the sharpcap polar alignment and decided to give doing a fully manual mount alignment using a laser pointer. Chose Andromeda because I could actually see it, used the laser pointer and nailed the alignment first try. I just laughed when the first image popped up on the tablet.
I wasted so much time with all that crap so I only got about 100 minutes worth of data. This is stack of 16 exposures, each 7 minutes at ISO 800 with my Nikon D7000 and Astrotech AT65EDQ on a Sirius EQ-G tracking mount. Not the best, but given all the crap I had to go through to get it....I'll take it.

We turned the clocks back an hour overnight, marking the end of Daylight Saving time and the early arrival of sunsets. It’s a rainy, dreary and chilly start to November, so I think the best use of that extra hour was for sleeping.
