Fall officially starts when the autumn equinox arrives. This year, fall begins on Tuesday, Sept. 22, 2020, in the United States and everywhere else in the northern hemisphere.

I won't go into the thinking behind the ongoing construction of the High Speed 2 (HS2) line which is costing at least £106bn and rising... No, this is the local railway line which once brought me back from work in Birmingham City Centre to my local station. I've always meant to take a picture of it from the railway bridge about a mile from home and now I have ! Love the autumn colours here.

Thanks for all your nice comments and faves - you're all very appreciated !

Fall colors , last one from last fall.

The rocks I was standing on were slick and slippery. Right behind me was another drop off of about 7 feet. If I slipped and fell into the freezing water, I would've been in deep trouble... luckily none of that happened. Next year I'm bringing a buddy with me to this spot.

Let misty autumn be our part!

The twilight of the year is sweet:

Where shadow and the darkness meet

Our love, a twilight of the heart

Eludes a little time's deceit.

― Ernest Dowson

“Autumn is the hardest season. The leaves are all falling, and they're falling like

they're falling in love with the ground.”

― Andrea Gibson

Finally reviewing some photos from last fall. My favorite winter time activity .

Bright fall colors and reflective water .

Was not sure how or where the composition should be on this...so this is what I went for!

The color of these flowers caught my eye. The detail of the flowerets is interesting as well. I don't know what kind of flowering bush this is. It reminds me of a butterfly bush but it's not exactly the same. Found in the schloss park in Bad Homburg.

Please press "L" to better see the detail of the flowerets.

I have been trying to spend an hour a day walking outside, as lack of access to gyms and working from home take their toll. I rarely bring my camera, but recent reports had indicated the presence of a new Screech-Owl near the trails (many thanks to David Burt!). I had not had any luck with the Owl, and was focusing more on the walking, when it appeared this week. I was lucky to have a few minutes alone with it as the light faded. These birds tend to become more animated just before dusk, preparing for the evening’s hunt, and while a tripod is almost necessary when it is a bit darker there was enough light for me.

A few Magnolias hung around for quite a while during a warmer, buggier fall migration, and they were easy to spot early in the day. They are one of the early risers, and, following the insects, they begin their day low to the ground, rising up as warmth and light animate the insects.

The first few days of October at North Lake in the Eastern Sierra is always on fire with colour. #EasternSierra #Autumn #Fall2020 #newshoez

Snow on mountain from Sugar Hill New Hampshire.

This swan was gracefully feeding by the Hudson Point Marina, where brick buildings facades were reflecting on the water during sunset light. It was a colorful and mosaic-like reflection effect on the water.

Photo taken in Paulus Hook neighborhood in Jersey CIty, New Jersey.

These intense sunset colors are a rare occurrence in our area, and it was an absolute delight to watch from our roof deck. I barely had time to grab my camera, climb to the roof and snap some photos before the colors faded out. The sight was almost otherworldly, the photo did not require any post-processing.

Here is a colorful view of a section of the Liberty State Marina, located adjacent to Liberty State Park in Jersey City, New Jersey. The blue, pink and lavender tones in the sky during sunset provide a beautiful palette of colors behind the glowing Manhattan skyline during golden hour.

This photo was taken with a Nikon D7500 DSLR and a Tamron 18-400mm super zoom lens. Image was processed using Luminar 4 software.

These acorns of the Northern Red Oak (Quercus rubra) are nestled together on a mat of Pincushion Moss. Collectively known as mast, the dry fruits from woody plants "is the primary fall and winter food for most wildlife species. In some areas, acorns may comprise more than 50 percent of the fall diets of White-tailed Deer and Wild Turkey."

Leaves in Muddy Water

Another of the last wave of Warblers moving through Ottawa this week, this Black-throated Green hunted insects by the River in a flock of Yellow-rumps. Like many of the late Warblers its desire for food overcame its shyness, and it gave lots of great views down low by the water in the late afternoon sun.

Taken for the "Smile on Saturday" theme of 9/5/2020: ENIGMA.

Found: a red leaf on an evergreen branch in the Schlosspark in Bad Homburg. We go for walks several times a week in this park. It's a beautiful place any time of the year but especially in fall.

A juvenile Great Blue Heron has been visiting Mud Lake for a month or so, and some of the visits have been pretty memorable. This pose, at the south end of the Lake, was at last light a few weeks ago, and a couple of lucky people with cameras - including me, out at a time of day I don’t usually visit the Lake - had fun watching and recording the bird’s hunting and preening.

By the way - in Calgary tonight, where it is snowing.

Actually, not a very safe spot for cats to cross the street. East 1st Avenue, Vancouver. November 8, 2020.

A late fall migrant - hence the background, as he posed among a variety of transitional foliage, mostly Sumac - picks his way towards his next insect meal. One of the things that makes the Black-throated Blue distinctive is that the differences between males and females - so pronounced they were thought to be separate species - starts at birth. Unlike many other birds, the male is always blue and the female not blue at all, from the time they fledge. One of the neat things I found with this bird was its greenish tinge, which is the mark of a juvenile male. I had never seen it before, or at least never noticed it.

Nature’s blend of flakes and fall in Sugar Hill New Hampshire.

I stood under this tree with its red branches swooping down all around me. It was a magical view of fall color. This shot only gives a glimpse of it. Best seen in large format.

Day 283/366 of Project 365 (Friday, 2020 October 9 - 152nd consecutive daily photo): The oddly pinnate leaflets of a sumac all dressed up in their finest attire. It's hard to find more brightly colored fall foliage than that afforded by the sumacs.

Grateful I was able to see and capture this wee bird twice!

Palm Warblers are distinct in their ‘look’ from other Warblers, partly because of their erect bearing and long legs, partly because of their distinctive tail-wagging, and partly because they are so often found on the ground or low to it. This bird was being harassed by some Yellow-rumped Warblers, and sought refuge in the sumac - a great setting for me, it turns out.

A juvenile GBH spent the fall engaging visitors to Mud Lake and giving great looks to photographers. On a cold and windy day, with a perfectly overcast sky, the bird barked/honked and surveyed a corner of the Lake.

This has to be a female! She already has her eye shadow on!

A group of five to eight (depending on the time of day and distribution around the area) American Wigeons are making a seasonal visit, and their colours are very much in synch with the seasonal reflections on the water. There are young males and females, eclipse plumage males, and a mature female - the full range of colouring and plumage for the species.

On a related note - it seems shocking to me how quickly we have transitioned from departing Warblers to migrating waterfowl. Soon the Redpolls will arrive!

Hope you are all doing well? This is the last bit of fall color on the way out of the city. I shot this past Thursday from the north side of the town and I believe that was the last warm day of this year. We really enjoyed the warmth and sunset colors over the town! What do you think?
