Single shot using washing up liquid and mustard cress

For the Macro Mondays theme of 'Oil on Water' . As a rule I'd use coloured paper as my base for this but having seen the youtube vid in the group, I used a floral piece of cloth. Taken inside a glass measuring exactly 3" but given a crop and slid a few sliders in Lightroom. HMM!

For Macro Mondays theme - Back Lit

Walthamstow, East London, UK

I have had these faithful old Cheaney shoes for many years. They have had new soles & heels once. I must have walked well over 2000 miles in them by now. "Shoes".. "Looking close on Friday"..

Having a play around with some bubble mixture to create a soap film. Took a few attempts with different setups. Got there in the end tho.

Mixture made from Fairy liquid, dishwasher rinse aid, water and this particular one had glycerine added. The glycerine caused the liquid to separate and this created the black parts you can see.

This is the view through the bottle of fairy liquid on my kitchen windowsill.

Taken on 26 July 2013 and uploaded 17 July 2024.

Procter & Gamble invented the soap opera, solved dandruff and make a mild, green liquid for hands that do dishes that you can buy in a squeezy bottle.

This is their London factory, which isn't in London, on the north bank of the River Thames at Grays, Thurrock. In Essex.

Behind the factory is a small church, St Clement's, which Procter & Gamble renovated when it fell into disrepair and was vandalised. It's a rather pretty church: see below.

The funeral in "Four Weddings And A Funeral" was filmed at St Clement's.

I shot this for the Macro Mondays group theme of Mysterious: 05/03/2012.

I was a bit pushed for time to come up with something for the theme this week, but when I saw sunlight streaming through a detergent bottle I knew I had to shoot it!

Unfortunately, by the time I'd set my camera up, the bright sunlight had disappeared, so I had to improvise my own sunshine using a flashgun behind the bottle!

Now, what could be more mysterious than a whole lot of volcanic activity inside a washing up liquid bottle? :)

Toy Sunday Theme: Soap Opera

Every Saturday was a soap opera at my house when I was growing up, since my weekly allowance was contingent upon me cleaning the house every weekend. Inevitably, this meant listening to the Metropolitan Opera matinee broadcast, since this is what my parents were listening to. It wasn't my first choice for cleaning music, but I grew to love it over the years.

(Explored 8 July, 2013; #139; since dropped)

Inspired by

Richard Heeks' Bricktree Bubble shot

I spent the morning chasing bubbles around my garden.

I was particularly lucky with the reflections in this one, although I think it could do with being a bit sharper.

Reached Explore #33

Update: entered this into the Solent Camera Club Projected Digital Image competition 9/3/2012 - theme: "My shadow or reflection" (where it got a joint 1st place :-)

Washing up.

My pet hate number 27 of 18411 (and rising).

In the good old days we would just toss our rubbish into the bin. But now we are obliged to wash the rubbish first.

My rubbish is now the cleanest and shiniest rubbish in the village! :>)

It has been dark grey and raining again today :-(( But I know what I want for Christmas - just some Fairy Liquid or bubble bath!!

Thanks Olly for the Glycerine tip - the bubbles last much longer and the colours and patterns are more intense.

Gravity. It isn't just a good idea. It's the Law.

I took a nice clean macro today using my iPhone macro lens for my project 365! :)

Ok, so I've been shaking up my washing up liquid bottle again to see what I could find! This is what I found!

The Daily Shoot - 05/02/2011 (#447) - Go abstract today and make a photograph that focuses on form and color rather than detail.

My version of the northern lights! One of my contacts had been playing with bubbles and as it has been wall to wall thick grey here again so I had a go! These were with a Tamron 90 macro lens and a Canon12 mm extension tube. The bubbles were Fairy Liquid and blown up with a straw. These are 4 shots of the same bubble as it aged; the colours showing in my light reflection were like the northern lights and changed shape and colour until the bubble popped!! Great fun and I will try again but it was pretty hard on my back!

Ollies bubbles here - www.flickr.com/photos/19083292@N00/6345453684/in/photostream

I really enjoyed creating this colourful abstract for my project 365!

But what is it? Well, it's actually a thin film of soapy water, stretched across the top of a tall drinking glass, and stood in natural light! After few seconds, colours can be observed in the surface of the film of soap and water mix!

The patterns and colours appear to change constantly until the surface tension eventually fails and the bubble bursts - so to speak!

Bubbles in a detergent bottle!

While slobbing around on my crash day is all very well, I realized by not going out I wouldn't have a photo using my splendid Google phone to upload. So, I decided to have some fun and you have to share it.

I know that Fairy Liquid and Fairy Soap are different things: for me, one is innocent (Fairy Liquid and its silly advertisements) the other quite naughty (Fairy Soap). I have this little lorry from when I used to post as Picanuper and it was to hand...

I spent a year in the USA and learned two things at school while there: how to count to 4 in Spanish and a verse of Ogden Nash. I learned from friends that, at Trick Or Treat a "trick" was to smear soap on their windows - rubbing a dry bar of soap against the glass would leave a film of soap that did no harm but was unsightly and difficult to get rid of. Fairy Soap, in the UK, was very good for that.

Again, the 'phone has delighted me !

So, there you have it.

I discovered this old Lux washing up liquid bottle stashed away at the back of the shed at my late parent's house. No longer containing washing up liquid, it would appear that my father had used it an on oil dispenser.

More colourful patterns formed when light interacts with a thin film of soapy water stretched, in this case, across the top of a tall thin drinking glass!

Some soap film action this afternoon.

Xanthan gum, glycerine, water and good old fairy liquid.

Just what it says. Close up of fairy liquid bubbles on my kitchen work surface.

I never wear rubber gloves for washing up. I hate 'em. I'm not that keen on washing up, truth be told. But I thought it was worth breaking a few rules for this shot.

Just some soapy water...

The real danger with a macro lens is that there is always things to shoot. Anywhere, anytime. I should have been making the breakfast when I took this.

Portland Place

Thanks for all the views, Please check out my other photos and albums.

Being a househusband can sometimes threaten your masculinity. Especially when split fingertips lead to the necessity of wearing marigold rubber gloves about the place.

Thankfully, this week, my dear wife has provided me with these rather splendid (extra thick) black rubber gloves from Tesco.

Now I flit around the house, looking a little more 'Darth Vader' and a little less 'Hilda Ogden'.

How did this come about, well I needed to a shot for a daily shoot assignment take a photograph with a different PoV. This was the excuse required to put the camera in the underwater housing and head for the pond and take On the top or underneath www.flickr.com/photos/rustymarvin/5433865381/ because of the effort required to put the camera in the housing I wanted to make use of the occasion, so anything in or underwater or getting covered in water was captured. I apologise in advance for forthcoming images of this vain.

What goes on in the kitchen sink note: no items were damaged or broken during in the making of this series. My hands are lovely and soft though.

The bubbles and suds are actually on the front of the camera housing, not editing or processing except for the main image and that was to crop 16:9 and add the black lines
