A location not easy to photograph, I have been here at twice before and each time something or other means you cannot get quite the shot you are after and this day was one of those days. Also here you really need to take images in portrait mode and for some reason find it not as easy as landscape mode.

The day here was as usual on my last few holidays here and in the lakes, raining. Therefore could not get into the right spot and had to get out the sports lens. This particular image is quite far into the falls itself, sun above at this time of year and catching sunlight on the moss and rocks reflecting in the water...

Arizona has been seeing extremely hot temperatures of 110F and above (+43C) for three weeks straight. And, we desperately need some reliefs soon!

For now, I'd just look at this image, then hope and pray. 😅

Have a lovely day, everyone...

Yesterday's hike to Fairy Falls was invigorating and peaceful. As the temperature warmed, the trail back out became a slippery slide of icy slush, making it slow going. Fairy Falls is a delicate beauty and one of my very favorites in the Gorge.

I hiked up to Fairy Falls with a single camera and lens this afternoon. I haven't been there since the 90's. Fairy Falls is located on the Wahkeena Falls Trail in the Columbia Gorge, Oreogn.

This a 20 ft. waterfall in the Columbia River Gorge upstream of the more well known (and accessible) Wahkeena Falls. I don't often create HDR images, but because the sun was above and slightly behind the falls, I decided HDR would be desirable to help control the flare at the top and the deep shadows,

This is Fairy Falls at Yellowstone National Park. I thought it was quite delicate and beautiful.

I have seen plenty of moose in Teton Valley and Grand Teton National Park, but this was the first time seeing a moose in Yellowstone National Park. And even better, it was entering the Firehole River when the morning light was still nice and warm. I'm purposely at F/16 to have more of the scene in focus. I posted a photo of Fairy Falls at Yellowstone before, but only showed the bottom portion (see first comment). It's a beautiful falls, plunging 220 ft (67m). I used an ND filter and stopped it way down to f/22. This gave me a 4 second exposure which I triggered using a timer. I've mentioned it before, but waterfalls are one of my favorite subjects to photograph. But I live in a desert so I enjoy vacationing where I can get a chance to see them.

This is Shingle Falls in the Spenceville Wildlife area, near Marysville CA (47 ft. high). No cougars spotted on the hike this time, but plenty of cows. Now that's exciting.

Fairy Falls is always a favorite to photograph with its little cascades. It's incredibly pleasing to look at 👀

A closer look at Fairy Falls. They say the best camera is the one you have in your hand. So be it a camera phone, point and shoot, wide angle, telephoto, ... or even a film camera (thank you retro hipsters), you go with what you've got. I had my telephoto with me and used it to zoom in on a particular portion of the flow. Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming, USA, August 2025

I can only go but so many images before I have to get back to posting my favorite subject, waterfalls. This is the beautiful Fairy Falls in the Columbia River Gorge. It's a bit of a workout up to this spot, but that's certainly my kind of workout. This was the first waterfall of the trip, and a good harbinger of things to come.

One source says that this is one of the most popularly photographed falls in the Columbia Gorge.

This is a distant view of 200 foot Fairy Falls. Eventually trees in the landscape recovering from the 1988 conflagration which consumed one third of the park will obscure dainty Fairy Falls.

I have been wanting to get into the gorge for the past couple of days, but was unable to make it until today. My first stop was Fairy falls, then I wandered down to Multnomah falls, and onto Horsetail falls. I ran into Manyfires at horsetail, but she was disguised in her winter gear, and I didn't recognize her at first... If you haven't seen her photos yet, I urge you to have a look

One more shot of the beautiful fairy falls. For this shot I got in real close and used a longer focal length. I am a big admirer of this particular type of falls as they come our really pretty in photographs and this one is one of my favorites. I wanted a shot emphasizing the details of the moss on the ricks and the flowing water.

Hope everyone likes it, Happy Tuesday!!

Fairy falls is a very photogenic waterfall, the water fans out over the rocks making it look like they glow maybe that’s why the original name was ghost falls.

Been seeing some nice images of Fairy Falls coming out this week so I thought I'd throw mine out there as well. Happy Waterfall Wednesday and thanks for lookin.

Little Wonders

Rob Thomas

Our lives are made

In these small hours

These little wonders

These twists and turns of fate

Time falls away

But these small hours

These small hours

Still remain

All of my regret

Will wash away somehow

But I cannot forget

The way I feel right now

In these small hours

These little wonders

These twists and turns of fate

Yeah, these twists and turns of fate

Time falls away

Yeah, but these small hours

And these small hours

Still remain

Yeah, oh, oh

The first of three waterfalls we photographed yesterday morning. The name of this fall seems to be a topic of conversation but the general consensus is that it is called either Fairy Falls or Lyrebird falls.

Either way, it is a stunning location and very easy to access.

Photographing it in the early morning light and deafening quietness was a pleasure.

Hope you like “Little Wonders”

Cheers, Mike

"Save the other half of yourselves and your lives for pleasure and adventure. It is not enough to fight for the land; it is even more important to enjoy it. While you can. While it’s still here. So get out there and hunt and fish and mess around with your friends, ramble out yonder and explore the forests, climb the mountains, bag the peaks, run the rivers, breathe deep of that yet sweet and lucid air, sit quietly for a while and contemplate the precious stillness, the lovely, mysterious, and awesome space."

- Edward Abbey

My precious stillness is the sound of water, hopefully with me standing in the middle of it. I took this on New Years Eve on a small hike up to Fairy Falls with Nathan and our friends Emily and Joel. Nothing is better than this, truly. It clears my head and lifts my heart every time.

I love the misty details of the stream, with every rock a beautiful obstacle to the silky water. Taken the same day as this.

This was on my first hike with the new Fuji GSW690III. It's a rangefinder, so I will have to get used to the parralax. The falls is slightly off center, but I am not sure if that's a problem.

Fairy Falls in the Columbia River Gorge is a simple little falls that seems to glow in the right light.

I haven't been back to Fairy Falls since taking this photo in 2016. I don't know if the moss and other vegetation survived the Eagle Creek Forest Fire in 2017. Trails in The Gorge have slowly been opening over the last couple of years, until COVID shut everything down again. I want to get back there to see how much has changed.

I think Fairy Falls is to the Columbia River Gorge as Horseshoe Bend is to the Colorado River - it is very well photographed. Go online and you will see endless images of this waterfall, and for good reasons. It is a very beautiful cascade, but more importantly, it photographs well. These two elements aren't necessarily synonymous. There are many beautiful waterfalls out there, but some can't be captured from a photogenic angle because of accessibility issues, or something may be obstructing it. Fortunately, Fairy Falls is readily accessible and unobstructed. Conversely, just because a waterfall is difficult to get to or off trail doesn't necessarily make it more beautiful or special. I know of some photographers who go out of their way to avoid photographing iconic or popular locations. To me this is like avoiding a great restaurant because it has been "overeaten." The logic simply doesn't hold up. Good food is good food, and a beautiful location is beautfiul regardless of how many times it has been photographed and viewed. In any case, I hope you enjoy yet another version of this iconic waterfall.

North Lawson waterfall loop track has both Fairy and St Michaels falls. Enter from the end of St Bernards Road and follow the well-marked track. The falls are quite close - albeit steep steps. If there aren't signs and steps then you aren't in the right place ;-)

Have a lovely day, everyone...

Upper Wahkeena Creek shortly before the last switchback to Fairy falls. I couldn't help but noticed how this section of the creek was so beautiful, almost like in fairy tale story. Hope you all could feel being there, right by where I was standing and took this shot!

The first time we visited Oregon’s beautiful Columbia River Gorge we were spellbound by its beauty and by the sheer number of waterfalls. We went on so many hikes the week we were there that we got our 10k steps in without any effort. This photo is taken at the stunning Wahkeena falls. This hike started out as just a trip to Fairy falls but we ran into this beautiful fall on the way. Later I learned that this fall is tough to photograph and while I took 3 – 4 images I didn’t get a composition that I liked. So, I didn’t post the image at the time. Recently I was going over some of my old images as part cleaning up my storage when saw this image. I decided to process the photos and see if I could get some interesting images.

Processing wise I boosted the contrast a bit and cropped out some of the bottom parts that were too distracting. I wish I had spent some time here looking for some more interesting compositions.
