Driving up to Fairhope, PA on B&O's Sand Patch Grade, after an ice storm on Jan. 20, 1979, wasn't one of the most enjoyable things I have ever done. Neither was climbing up on the hillside on the ice encrusted snow. The pay off came when we shot the helper, SD35 No. 7405 and a SD40-2, shoving hard on the rear of a westbound manifest. Shortly after taking this image, a huge ice flow came crashing down Wills Creek. It was a sight to behold, 10 to 15 feet high and taking out everything in its path. We high-tailed it out of there, fearing it would take out a highway bridge further down the mountain.
NS 8101 pilots westbound loaded coal train 746 under the PRR signal bridge at CP Fairhope in Canton, Ohio, on Aug. 26, 2018. The new cantilever in the distance spelled certain doom for the PRR relics--the signals from Massillon to Alliance were cut over a few weeks later on Nov. 3, 2018. Since then, NS cut has cut back trains and downgraded the line to the point where no further signal replacements on the line are a worthwhile investment... for now.

A westbound steel slab train out of Baltimore slowly grinds up Sand Patch grade at Fairhope, PA. The sounds of Wills Creek are momentarily being drowned out by the roar of four different EMD models, all in the company notch.

Eventually, we found our way to the downtown area and spent quite a bit of time wandering the streets, enjoying the architecture, and even visited a few of the small shops. And it's not accidental that I am sharing a photo of the Fairhope Soap Company ... #etbtsy

South Church Street in downtown Fairhope Alabama at the Fairhope Avenue Crosswalk. A live oak tree hangs over the street. Parking spaces on both side of the street are almost full. Shoppers, tourist, and residence enjoy this quintessential American town along Mobile Bay.

W05524 with CSXT 5864 is heading back uphill with B24 now leading, instead of helping on the rear of 25 side dump cars, just hours after the train came east, and the Cumberland Yardmaster told the crew they went to far and had to turn around.

Matching W&LE SD40-2's 6352 and 6353 pull train 271 west of the crossovers at CP Fairhope so they can backup and crossover into the NS Canton yard in the background. Taken this morning in preparation for the westbound NS OCS to Fort Wayne before I found out they would turn north at Alliance.

2/2021 - Fairhope, PA
I'm late posting these shots from Sand Patch because it was such a drab day with no interesting power. Just got a new truck and was time to break it in with its first railfan road trip. CSXT 3203 is eastbound coming down the grade.
Constant rain was the theme of the day, and with a flurry of traffic on this visit, it made for some excellent (and ear piercing thanks to wheel slip) railfanning at Fairhope, PA. Here, A neat looking lashup, lead by CSXT 3412, winds its way down the Sand Patch grade, holding back a lengthy intermodal on the rain soaked rails.
Even as rain falls in the hills of Southwestern Pennsylvania, the fall colors are very vibrant. It's because of these colors that space on the Capitol Limited and other long distance trains in the Fall, especially in the sightseer, are almost always limited or sold out. Due to an unspecified problem, this day's Eastbound Capitol Limited was roughly an hour late, as it howls down the Sand Patch grade at Fairhope, PA.
CSXT 1851, the NC&STL Heritage Unit, leads eastbound intermodal train CSX I116 through Fairhope, Pennsylvania.
Wheeling 271 shoves its train past the Fairhope signals at Norfolk Southern’s Canton Yard just after daybreak. A highood in Operation Lifesaver paint is leading.

Facades in small towns are tall but not too tall. Cities have building that go up up up and seem to never end. Small towns have building that make room for the white puffy clouds to float by, adding a touch to their charm.
