This long abandoned house sits at the end of a subdivision near the Rock River. Why it was left abandoned is a mystery, a mystery that will soon fade into history...
This is more of a tribute to metal and hard rock in general than a single track, but I’ve rediscovered some classic albums during lockdown. Fade to Black was one of the first Metallica songs I heard back when I was at school in the 80’s and started a lifelong following.
The song itself is pretty deep, after reminding myself of the lyrics it’s all about suicide, so please don’t think it’s reflected in my mood!
Just last week I bought a cracking new pair of Bluetooth earphones that a are perfect for thrashing too whenever I get the chance! (Today while cleaning the bathroom)
I was going for the classic metal album cover look à la ‘The Black Album’ or ‘Black in Black, originally I shot a marble which was kind of cool, then I found this lump of iron pyrite which seemed to fit the theme perfectly!
Another shot of the long abandoned Yesterday's News farmhouse in northern Illinois. This once ornate old farmhouse has decayed badly in the years since I first photographed it, The beautiful stained glass windows are broke and some of the facade has fallen away. But it soldiers on and the owner shows no signs of remedying the situation besides putting up fresh "no trespassing" signs.
Fine by me....
This image is inspired by the fact that this year - it´s 40 years since Metallica released "Ride the Lightning" with the song Fade to Black (released on July 27, 1984). It´s a dark song but still a masterpiece!

Drifting further every day
Getting lost within myself
Nothing matters, no one else
I have lost the will to live
Simply nothing more to give
There is nothing more for me
Need the end to set me free
Things not what they used to be
Missing one inside of me
Deathly lost, this can't be real
Cannot stand this hell I feel
Emptiness is filling me
To the point of agony
Growing darkness taking dawn
I was me but now he's gone
No one but me can save myself
But it's too late
Now I can't think
Think why I should even try
Yesterday seems as though
It never existed
Death greets me warm
Now I will just say goodbye

I dry-peeled this photo a few minutes after shooting, and attached the transparency to a kraft-paper page in my notebook.
Happy Polaroid Week! Day One, Image One. From the archives, some expired Fade to Black images that I shot years ago but never shared. I wasn't excited about them at the time but like them now.
I recently bought myself a cheap fractal filter which conveniently has the same thread size as my Sony 24-105mm lens with it's long zoom range. Perfect for a spot of zoom pulling.
Zoom pulling is a technique where the lens is zoomed in or out during a long exposure and to be honest it can be quite addictive! I can be stood in the dark for hours zooming in and out and trying different effects.
I've also combined the following shots with my new RGB LED lights. Instead of using Godox AD200 strobes, I've started to experiment with continuous light sources.
I've hesitated till now to buy continuous lights because it wasn't possible without spending thousands to remotely trigger the lights. Shooting in often tricky terrain, having to move back and forth in the dark to switch lights on or off isn't the most convenient thing to do. Not to mention dangerous stumbling around in the dark trying to prevent stray lights hitting the sensor! I could replace the lens cap to prevent light from hitting the sensor but it's definitely more convenient to remote control the lights.
So last night, @fadetoblack and I ventured out in to the Derbyshire Peak District to see what we could get with the lights.
sx70 model 2 and Fade to Black film.
i like this one a lot. it reminds me of "real" time zero film (minus the flares).
