Writing to a Thesis: Using Loop Writing to Arrive at an Original Focus for an Essay or Research Paper
An enormous challenge for instructors who require writing is helping students to own what they write: to invest themselves vigorously--their thinking, their experience and their creativity--in the process. The loop writing exercises that we will practice in this workshop are designed to meet this challenge. After 15 - 30 minutes of loop writing, most students not only will arrive at a completely original thesis, they also will have brainstormed key points for further exploration. An added bonus of this type of pre-writing is that it removes the temptation to plagiarize by creating a focus not to be found anywhere on the Web.
