Around 12 inches long. A bright blue top with a lot of white and black in the wings and tail with a dingy white bottom. They have black facial marking and a prominent crest.
The inhabit chiefly oak forests, but now also city parks and suburban yards especially where oak trees predominate.
They range east of the Rocky Mountains from southern Canada to the GUlf of Mexico. In winter they often withdraw from the northern parts of their range.

I love getting pictures of bears while they're eating because you can often capture all kinds of funny facial expressions such as this one.
For some reason, this facial expression reminded me of the old song by Leslie Gore called "It's My Party and I'll Cry if I Want to."
When I was in 7th grade, my best friend Darlene and I loved Leslie Gore songs and we'd always get together after school and play her record and sing her songs together. We wanted to be singers when we grew up. Neither of us ended up as singers, but we had fun dreaming about it.
Well, we know of course that this sow isn't pouting about anything. She has a nice fish just under the water where her paw is and she was happily munching away at it but I couldn't pass up sharing this one with her very pouty look.

Known amongst Old Dalby test track train crew as the 'Grimston Facial', the most southerly of three vent shafts in Grimston Tunnel has a constant waterfall throughout the year. The water is a bit pungent and it's not a good idea to have your cab window open as you pass. In this view, 56098 has been posed for a photo with its headlight illuminating the cascading water. 8 February 2025.

Die Waldohreule hat mit einer Körperlänge von 31 bis 37 cm und einer Flügelspannweite von 86 bis 98 cm etwa die Größe einer Schleiereule. Sie ist wesentlich schlanker als ein Waldkauz und mit einem Gewicht von 220 bis 280 Gramm (Männchen) bzw. 250 bis 370 Gramm (Weibchen) erheblich leichter. Durch die auffallend großen Federohren und das marmorierte Gefieder, ähnelt die Waldohreule optisch dem deutlich größeren Uhu. Die Federohren haben keine Funktion im Zusammenhang mit der Hörleistung der Eule. Zur Verstärkung der Hörleistung dient vielmehr der bei der Waldohreule auffällige Gesichtsschleier, der Ähnlichkeit mit dem Schleier der Sumpfohreule aufweist.

It is much slimmer than a tawny owl and considerably lighter, weighing 220 to 280 grams (males) or 250 to 370 grams (females). With its strikingly large feather tufts and marbled plumage, the long-eared owl resembles the much larger eagle owl. The feather tufts have no function in relation to the owl's hearing. Instead, the long-eared owl's striking facial disc, which resembles the disc of the short-eared owl, serves to enhance its hearing.

Avec cette photo d’archive (2014), je voulais vous aviser de mon intention de créer un nouveau groupe sur Flickr.
Depuis toujours, et ceux qui me connaissent depuis mes débuts sur cette galerie (2012), savent que j’affectionne particulièrement « les portraits de rue » d’où mon intention de concrétiser cette passion au travers d’un nouveau groupe qui s’intitulera ; « Facial Expression and Body Language » !
Je dois également vous avouer que depuis un certain temps et pour des raison diverses dont un problème persistant de lombaires et un confinement difficilement supporté, je n’ai plus eu guère l’occasion de faire mes « petites vadrouilles photographiques » dans les rues …
Mais tout cela se soigne comme il est courant de dire et je serai de retour le plus rapidement possible sur « le terrain » ….
Quant à ma présence sur la galerie, elle ne me pose pas de problème puisque il me suffit de me trouver devant mon iMac pour être en contact avec vous tous, mes amis « les artistes » !

Photos like these make me all smiley that I made a set called "entropy", photos like this one really feel at home with the sense of "entropy".
I wanted it to look milky, but catching the most agressivity and spurring it out, and milk is one of the last things we could associate with agressivity, and I love the irony here.

The Common Gallinule is quite beautiful and under-appreciated. It is anything but common in visual appearance. This one was found along a trail at the #1 attraction in Florida, Circle B Bar Reserve near Lakeland, Florida. They measure about 13 inches (33 cm) from beak-tip to tail-tip.

The Rook (Corvus frugilegus) is a member of the Corvidae family in the passerine order of birds. Named by Carl Linnaeus in 1758, the species name frugilegus is Latin for "food-gathering".
Rooks are distinguished from similar members of the crow family by the bare grey-white skin around the base of the adult's bill in front of the eyes. The feathering around the legs also look shaggier and laxer than the congeneric Carrion Crow. The juvenile is superficially more similar to the Crow because it lacks the bare patch at the base of the bill, but it loses the facial feathers after about six months. Collective nouns for rooks include building, parliament, clamour and storytelling. Nesting is always colonial (rookeries), usually in the very tops of the trees. Branches and twigs are broken off trees (very rarely picked up off the ground), though as many are likely to be stolen from nearby nests as are collected from trees.
Though resident in Great Britain, Ireland and much of north and central Europe, vagrant to Iceland and northern Scandinavia, it also occurs as an eastern race in Asia where it differs in being very slightly smaller on average, and having a somewhat more fully feathered face.

In the 7 years that I have been regularly walking through Griffith Park, Dublin 9, Rooks have only become a regular sight in the last few months. A very welcome addition to the avifauna of the park.
It is a bird of open country such as farmland, marshes, taiga and savannah. They are widespread in lowlands with scattered small woods. It is an elegant bird of prey, appearing sickle-like in flight with its long pointed wings and square tail, often resembling a swift when gliding with folded wings. It is fast and powerful in flight and will take large insects, such as dragonflies, which it transfers from talons to beak and eats while soaring slowly in circles. It also captures small bats and small birds in flight. Its speed and aerobatic skills enable it to take swallows and even swifts on the wing, and barn swallows or house martins have a characteristic "hobby" alarm call. It is known to harass swallows while they are roosting and dispersing from roosts. When not breeding, it is crepuscular, hawking principally in the mornings and evenings. While on migration, they may move in small groups.
Hobbies nest in old nests of crows and other birds. The tree selected is most often one in a hedge or on the extreme edge of a spinney, whence the bird can observe intruders from a considerable distance. It lays 2–4 eggs. Incubation is said to take 28 days and both parents share in this duty, though the female does the greater part.

African wattled lapwings are conspicuous and unmistakable birds. They are large brown waders with a black crown, white forehead and large yellow facial wattles. The tail is white, tipped black, and the long legs are yellow. In flight, the upper wings have black flight feathers and brown coverts separated by a white bar. The underwings are white with black flight feathers. The African wattled lapwing has a loud peep-peep call.
