2 of 12 story quilts by artist Faith Ringgold in her "French Collection" series on display at the New Museum.
The New York Times wrote about the series : "It related the experience of a single main character, a young African American painter named Willia Marie Simone, who comes to Europe for the first time in the 1920s with her two young children, to immerse herself in European art — a journey, which, as it happens, Ringgold herself made in 1961 for the same reason, and with her mother and daughters in tow."
she isn't so good with the internets, so i don't need to worry about posting this before she actually gets it.
Many years ago, when I was living in Kyoto, I bought this handcrafted appliqué wall hanging at a temple flea market. I admired the intricate craftsmanship of the artist, a very self-effacing Japanese homemaker. Many of the fabric pieces came from old kimono and furoshiki wrapping cloth. It now lives with my daughter.

A small section of a large wall hanging. The individual fabric pieces are about 2". I need to get a shot of the whole piece next time I'm there, it's very eye-catching. : )

Artist Maria A Guzman Capron - she uses cutting and sewing to create. Here she has used both old and new fabric to make non-binary femme figures. The androgynous nature of the characters represent the exchange between realities and people.

These petroglyph images on this quilt that are displayed at the National Quilt Museum in Paducah, Kentucky are not from the ancient people of this area. Different style. Different culture. Different technology. But impressive nonetheless.

For this installation “TO LET THE SKY KNOW / DEJAR QUE EL CIELO SEPA" The artist "Ana María Hernando creates sculpture in an abundance of tulle—the sumptuous fabric netting—inspired by natural forms and transformed through the sewing process. Across the lawns in Madison Square Park, the artist has realized a series of beauteous, atmospheric clouds and a cascading waterfall that float above and alongside viewers.
In response to the bleak cityscape of wintertime, she has inserted tulle sculptures of vibrant coloration and buoyancy as symbols of hope, growth, and fluidity. Her sculptures beckon with their seeming fragility and evanescence; ultimately, their durability takes hold of our memories."
Photograph of a hanging of Japanese fabric art. What strikes me about this work is the variations on 4 colours: gold, maroon, red, and green, accented with variations in patterns in the clothing. Unfortunately, when I took the photo, there was a breeze in the room resulting in blurriness in the lower half of the photograph. Still the artistic merit of the hanging is worth posting it anyways!
It looks like chaos, but it is somewhat organized. There is much creative work happening with piecing bits of fabric together to create a new pieces - working across the table from each other with a design wall between us.
I was having a glue issue and this bothers me.
This might be reworked.

A partir de cierta hora, deberías estar prohibida. Sólo para adúlteros. Sólo para ellos, y para mis ojos. La menos apta para casi todos los mayores.
En el resto del territorio, deberías prodigarte por entregas. Darte de poquito en poquito, perdona pero es lo que tiene ser tú.
También deberías salir en las películas. En todas las previsibles. En todas las que necesiten un gran final. Y en las que vayan directamente a dvd.
Deberías figurar en los cuentos. Contra toda bruja mala, a por todo lobo feroz.
Deberías ser noticia. En todas las ediciones, justo después de los deportes, antes de cada temporal.
Deberías estar en los sellos. Sólo en cartas de amor, de las que ya nadie escribe, de las que ya nadie quiere leer.
Deberías sonar todo el día, una canción con tu nombre. Una de esas que es casi imposible versionar sin caer en herejía o sacrilegio.
Y hablando del tema, deberías tener tu lugar reservado sobre cada altar. Para irle dando por saco a cualquier santería o santidad.
Deberías hacer tantas cosas.
Como por ejemplo, volverte dinero. Tan fácil de perder, tan difícil de ganar. Y a veces, volverte hostia. Tan fácil de ganar, tan difícil de olvidar.
Deberías ser producto de gran consumo. Acompañada siempre de tu slogan. Ni se le ocurra salir sin ella.
Ser camiseta. O mejor, ropa interior. Imagino que no hay que explicarte por qué.
Deberías llegar a todos los kioscos. Entre chucherías muy dulces y revistas que se compran por los artículos de investigación.
Igualmente habría que colocarte en las farmacias. Entre profilácticos con sabores y pastillas para la lumbalgia, dosis de 2, 4 y 6 carcajadas al día.
Deberías cobrar por suspiro. Plus de peligrosidad cada vez que hicieras suspirar.
En cuanto al precio, no sé, deberías salir más cara que las putas de lujo, pero tampoco tanto como un político, no nos vayamos a engañar.
Deberías convertirte en trofeo. Y declararte desierta edición tras edición.
Salirte de todos los mapas.
Crecerte en los circos de enanos.
Poner a parir a todas las burras.
Y a caer de un burro a las que aún no lo son.
Deberías embotellarte en frascos de perfume. Que hubiese que restregar mucho para sacarte de la botella. Y luego encima tuviesen que concederte los 3 deseos a ti.
Fabricarte a mano y a máquina. Estamos todos hartos de tanto frotar.
Patrocinar las cajas de kleenex.
Poner a prueba el blanco de Ariel.
Y ya puestos, deberías mirar mejor con quién andas.
Deberías alejarte de mí.
Aunque al final, supongo que acabarás haciendo lo que siempre haces.
Lo que te da la gana.

100 stukjes textiel uit mijn huishouden. Ik verknipte handdoeken, vaatdoeken, gordijnen, beddengoed, meubelstof. De stukjes werden opgestikt met tekst-steekjes; keuken, slaapkamer, huiskamer en badkamer, want al die kleine stukjes samen maken mijn "THUIS". Ik maakte dit werk voor een internationaal project, daarom is de tekst in het Engels. 200 x 200 cm.

100 pieces of fabric from my home. Pieces of towels, dishcloth, curtains, bedlinen, cushions, upholstery. Stichted on witch text; kitchen, bedroom, living etc. Because to me all those pieces of fabric mean "HOME".
