Among my favourite birds are the odd-looking thick-knees…

The genus name Burhinus comes from the Greek bous, ox, and rhis, nose. The Burhinus are commonly called thick-knee, stone-curlew or dikkop. They are medium-sized, terrestrial waders, though they are generally found in semi-arid to arid, open areas. Only some species of Burhinus are associated with water.

This Peruvian Thick-knee was seen in desert scrub in Paracas National Park, Peru. It has an unmistakable strong eyeline and large eyes. This species is mostly nocturnal, but this was one of a group of birds seen close to a road in daylight.

Small duck with chalky-blue patches on the upperwing (visible in flight). Breeding males unmistakable with bold white crescent in front of eye and polka-dotted sides. Females are cold brown overall and intricately patterned. Look for a hint of a pale crescent on the face, as well as a dark eyeline and pale eye-arcs. Usually found in shallow wetlands or marshes, where it can occur in pairs or flocks, sometimes mixed with other species of ducks. Compare with other teal species: female Cinnamon Teal is warmer-toned overall and has a duller face pattern, while female Green-winged Teal is more compact, darker, and has a different wing pattern in flight. Just three of these lovely ducks were inhabiting the wetland. Of course, it could also be that the local 4th graders were out in hordes doing a project on wetlands and so most ducks took shelter deep in the reeds.

The common oriole in the western U.S., wintering throughout Mexico. Adult males have a large white wing patch and mostly orange face with a black eyeline. Females are duller overall, mostly gray on the belly, usually with brightest orange on the face. Immature males are similar to females, but usually slightly brighter and with a black throat and eyeline. Breeds in riparian corridors and open woods; winters in any wooded habitat. Visits feeders with nectar and fruits. Females can be very difficult to distinguish from Baltimore Oriole, and hybrids do occur. Bullock's is usually brightest on the face, not the breast. (eBird)

American Tree Sparrow (Spizelloides arborea) is hardy northern sparrow with plump body, small bill and long, thin tail. Note rusty cap and rusty (not black) eyeline, gray head and unstreaked grayish breast with dark smudge in center.

Rather nondescript vireo with a blank face. Pale grayish-olive overall with a faint white eyebrow, darker grayish crown, and pale yellowish wash on the sides. Often confused with Philadelphia Vireo; note Warbling shows brightest color on sides (not throat) and fainter dark eyeline (especially indistinct in front of the eye). Warbling is also longer-tailed and has a slightly longer, thinner bill than Philadelphia. Scratchy warbling song is heard from treetops, particularly in riparian areas and cottonwoods. Migrants and wintering birds can be found in any wooded habitat, as far south as Central America. (eBird)

A very plain little bird, but a song that will make anyone smile. Very common here in Spring and Summer, yet often very difficult to see because they just blend in. Luckily this one was hopping around just at eye level chasing bugs early in the season so a couple of shots were possible.

One of the most common birds we saw during our trip. Bold and beautiful, they showed no fear of humans and wandered around the parks as though they owned them (which they probably did).

You can tell a house finch, which tends to be much more common, from a purple finch by checking out the females. Purple finch females have that distinctive white stripe above and behind their eye. A female house finch would not show that obvious light eyeline.

Small, slender, and incredibly cute sparrow. Plain grayish breast, rusty cap, and black eyeline in breeding season. Not as bright in winter, but still shows a brown cap and dark eyeline. Juveniles are extensively streaky. Common and widespread throughout most of North America. Usually found in open woodlands, scrubby areas, or even in suburban settings. Adult males are bright yellow below with heavy black streaks on the flanks. A black eyeline and a black semicircle under the eye mark the yellow face. Males often have a chestnut patch on the back and a dark spot on the side of the neck. Females and immatures are similar but paler, with a grayish head and broken white eyering.

Yesterday I found an American tree sparrow and mentioned that it looked very similar to a chipping sparrow. Here's a chipping sparrow for comparison. Note the black eyeline, solid steel-gray bill and a clear gray chest that lacks a dark central spot. Chipping sparrows are common summer residents here while American tree sparrows are common winter residents.

Ducks pair up over the winter, even before they develop their breeding plumage. This male (with the red eye) is hovering protectively with his mate (brown eye) while they plan for the future :) Happy Valentine's Day!

FACTS:

Distinctive sandy-brown songbird with a long rufous tail tipped black and white, often held cocked. The head has a strong white eyebrow and dark eyeline. The song is melodic and thrushlike and the call is a harsh “tek.” Usually seen foraging on the ground in open areas with dense bushes, sometimes in gardens and orchards close to human habitation.

I stumbled across a photoshoot recently, apparently for a wedding magazine. I quickly captured this shot from some distance out of the eyeline of the official photographer.

Georgia Mountains. This is a first fall male. Notice the yellow in the face and throat areas without evidence of any orange. Notice the blacker eyeline and top edge to the otherwise lighter face patch. Compare to the fall female in the previous post.

There weren't many birds seen in the Everglades, nor in Arthur R Marshall Loxahatchee NWR, but Paul and I found a small tree near a water feature with a warbler flitting amid the thick foliage at Loxahatchee.

I took several pictures and so did Paul. I kept saying Northern Parula; he kept saying Yellow-throated Warbler. Those two birds look nothing alike. We didn't compare pictures at that time to see who was right. Well, BOTH of those warblers were in the tree, as well as this beauty (in the picture), a Prairie Warbler :-))

A Brewster's warbler is a hybrid that results from a Golden-winged warbler mating with a Blue-winged warbler. As such it has plumage features of both species. I've had the good fortune of photographing over a dozen Brewster's including both first generation and second generation back-crosses. We had 4 this Spring on my Michigan trip including one female. I've photographed females of this hybrid before including both first and 2nd generation back-crosses but this was the best opportunity I've had with a female Brewster's to date. The image of this bird is from Georgia as it was migrating along the Chattahoochee River corridor. Kudos to my never tiring friend Romin who said let's try this corner once more for migrants after a generally slow morning. I otherwise would have missed this bird and had an unmemorable morning.

1st generation Brewster's do have some yellow below and the females have more than the males but the amount of yellow below is far less than even the dullest of the Blue-winged warblers. See my previous post for more on the Blue-winged warbler.

Above this bird's coloration is similar to a female Golden-winged warbler. Its eyeline (from Blue-winged parentage) is more gray than black and its crown has a great deal of olive in it with a small forehead stripe of brighter yellow all of which points to a female rather than a male. Its wingbars are white similar to what is found in a Blue-winged warbler.

Finally notice the beak coloration which is more brown/gray than black which is the case with all fall winged warblers whether they are Go1den-winged, B1ue-winged, or hybrids. Generally you can look at a photograph of a winged warbler and know whether it was taken in Spring or Fall just by beak coloration.

When a cold snap hit our area, so did the American Tree Sparrows. Always enjoyable to watch these busy birds hopping around and scratching at the ground. Happy to have them in my yard.

Mostly brownish above, with pale feather edges, tan below, with neat dark stippling. The crown is dark brown with a pale central stripe, and most show a narrow dark eyeline.

Whimbrels probe with their long bills into mudflats or wet sand for invertebrates such as crabs, walking slowly through areas where water is very shallow. Flocks moving in migration, or between roosting and feeding areas, vocalize often. Males sing and display on and above nesting territories in the arctic, often calling loudly when they spot predators or intruders.

This shy little sparrow wanted to visit the same bird bath as the grackle but was intimidated by the grackle's size and exuberance, Instead, he watched from the water drip until the it left, then took a quick drink and he disappeared back into the greenery.

A visit to a building site that Michael and I had been eye-ing up for a good few years now.

We've been doing this for a while but I really haven't built up any confidence or inate ability. Michael on the other hand has gained complete, maximum bravado. Never concerned to try a way in, to push his luck. It's quite something - I'm often in awe of him (mostly whilst I'm nervously hiding in a shadow).

This shot was taken near the top of the site, from which one day someone will have a lovely coastal view.

A Northern Waterthrush, one of the Parulidae - the New World Warblers. Not as flashy as some of it brightly-coloured relatives, the waterthrush compensates with a loud whip snap song, swaggering tail wag, and a mastery of its dimly lit forest pond haunts.

Adding to the mystique, it also has a doppelgänger - the southern Louisiana Waterthrush. Only a rare visitor hereabouts, the Louisiana lacks the yellow tint on the white undersides, is a bit larger, and sports a white eyeline that flares wider towards the end, an unstreaked throat, bright pink legs, and a salmon wash on its flanks. As a final touch, the Louisiana's song is even more amped up than the Northern’s.
