A Golden Eyelash Viper from the lowland rainforest of Costa Rica, in the Sarapiqui region.

Loves frogs and other small reptiles...The eyelash palm pitviper is named for the bristly scales above its eyes. It looks like it has a hood or eyelashes over its eyes. It can be easily recognized by its color and triangular head. They may be yellow, green or pinkish depending on where they come from. It is one of the smallest venomous snakes in Central America measuring only up to 2.5 feet (76 centimeters). Eyelash palm pitvipers range from southern Mexico through Central America to Colombia, Ecuador and western Venezuela, though they have inadvertently been sent throughout the world in banana shipments.

This one was photographed in Costa Rica guided by Neotropic Photo Tours.

Arenal, Costa Rica

A change from my normal wildlife postings, but that was the nature of the Costa Rica trip. This is a nocturnal snake with a bite deadly to small prey.

All comments and favs sincerely appreciated.

Eyelash

Viper

Bocaraca

(Bothriechis schlegelii)

Just one more shot of the beautiful Eyelash Viper in the Caribbean lowlands of Costa Rica. Our guides found this tiny venomous viper, although I'll never know how they spotted it.

Staartmees - Long Tailed Tit (Aegithalos caudatus).

Bad light, but lightning reflexes.

One of the guides found this small, about 20cm, viper and brought it in to be photographed. Although small, the venom is still very toxic and can lead to acute renal failure.

The eyelash viper is a relatively small species of pitviper, with adults ranging from 55–82 cm (22–32 in) long, and females being longer and more variable in size than males, which can grow to 69 cm (27 in) long. It has a wide, triangular-shaped head, and eyes with vertical pupils. Like all pit vipers, it is solenoglyphous, having large, hypodermic needle-like fangs in the front of the upper jaw that fold back when not in use, and has heat sensitive organs, or pits, located on either side of the head between the eye and nostril.

Its most distinguishing feature, and origin of its common name, is the set of modified scales above the eyes that look much like eyelashes. The eyelashes are thought to aid in camouflage, breaking up the snake's outline among the foliage where it hides. The eyelash viper occurs in a wide range of colours, including red, yellow, brown, green, even pink, as well as various combinations thereof. It often has black or brown speckling on the base colour. No external features distinguish the two sexes.

Candid street photography from Glasgow, Scotland. Sometimes it is the small details that catch your eye as a street shooter. Here, it was the intensity of her false eyelashes and how striking there are. Enjoy!
