Bathed in golden silence, the scarlet ibis stood like a flame resting on bark — a living ember between shadow and light.
No sound. No rush. Just this fleeting instant, where nature dared to burn with elegance.
Can ugliness be beautiful? Most photographers find amazing autumn leaves for close-up shots, I've also done it. But this is far from 'beautiful' by most standards, yet it caught my eye - and lens. I guess this might be beauty to me only, not to most of you. Apologies.

Yesterday Matt and I went to Durant Nature Park in Raleigh to take pictures of fall colors. The colors were gorgeous- not yet in peek but almost there. I had never been to this park but really enjoyed walking around. Right when we arrived at the main lake, I saw this beauty shining so bright. 'Rainbows in Autumn' is the perfect title for this shot! Simply gorgeous.

The Malachite Butterfly attains its name due to its bright green coloured wings that resemble the colour of the malachite mineral. These butterflies usually live in citrus, mango and avocado orchards and in semi-deciduous or subtropical evergreen woodlands. The Malachite butterflies have a large wingspan from 8.3cm to 9.9cm. The caterpillars are a spiky black colour with red coloured markings, it becomes an emerald green chrysalis marked with pink colour and finally evolves into an eye catching adult butterfly.

If you are a fan of my work, I would really appreciate it if you would "like" my page on facebook at: Josh Sommers Art. Thank you!
This is a rework of a panorama I posted back in January. The original version had some bad noise issues, so I redid the whole thing from scratch taking steps to eliminate noise as much as possible along the way. This version is very similar to the original version aside from the noise and a few other minor details that I corrected. All in preparation for getting this puppy printed.
This shot was taken in early January of this year, following one of the most powerful storm systems to hit the San francisco Bay Area in nearly 20 years. That day the rain mellowed out and even stopped for periods as my father and I made the trip from my hometown of Petaluma down to San Francisco to purchase a new Canon 24-70L lens. After purchasing the lens I wanted to test it out on my way back home. Not knowing the city very well, and after taking the wrong exit and being sent back down 19th avenue into the city, I just went to a place I knew how to get to: this beach. With the new lens on my camera I could only capture short spans of the bridge from this location, so I winged a handheld HDR panorama for this shot, and luckily the shots all lined up perfectly.
This is from my archives. Longwood Gardens is famous for its collection of waterlilies which are exhibited in an outdoor display in a small courtyard within the main conservatory. Especially eye-catching are the gigantic Victoria water-platters, a type of waterlily, with leaf pads typically reaching six feet across or larger. A Victoria water-platter may have as many as ten of these huge leaf pads at one time, spread over a large expanse of water. The leaves emerge as prickly shells, but as they open they spread out on the water's surface, revealing their smooth upper surface. I was visiting Longwood Gardens at the end of the season, as staff were removing the water-platters and other waterlilies for the winter. This large water-platter leaf was upside down on the pavement and I was struck by the many textures, patterns, and colors on the underside of this amazing leaf. Marcus Tullius Cicero.
Marcus Tullius Cicero (3 January 106 BC – 7 December 43 BC) was a Roman politician and lawyer, who served as consul in the year 63 BC. He came from a wealthy municipal family of the Roman equestrian order, and is considered one of Rome's greatest orators and prose stylists.
His influence on the Latin language was so immense that the subsequent history of prose, not only in Latin but in European languages up to the 19th century, was said to be either a reaction against or a return to his style. According to Michael Grant, "the influence of Cicero upon the history of European literature and ideas greatly exceeds that of any other prose writer in any language". Cicero introduced the Romans to the chief schools of Greek philosophy and created a Latin philosophical vocabulary (with neologisms such as evidentia, humanitas, qualitas, quantitas, and essentia) distinguishing himself as a translator and philosopher.
