Buff-banded Rail

Scientific Name: Gallirallus philippensis

Description: The Buff-banded Rail is a medium-sized stout rail with short legs. It has a distinctive grey eyebrow and an orange-brown band on its streaked breast. The lores, cheek and hindneck are rich chestnut. The chin and throat are grey, the upperparts streaked brown and the underparts barred black and white. The eye is red. Young birds are much paler to white underneath, with indistinct bars and only a faint orange-brown tint on the breast. Downy chicks are fluffy black. This rail walks slowly, with tail raised and flicking constantly.

Similar species: The orange-brown breast band distinguishes the Buff-banded Rail from the similar but smaller Lewin's Rail,Dryolimnas pectoralis, which has a rich chestnut crown and nape and a proportionally longer pink bill.

Distribution: The Buff-banded Rail is widespread in mainland Australia, particularly along the eastern coast and islands, and on Norfolk and Lord Howe Islands. It is also found in south-east Asia, New Guinea and New Zealand.

Habitat: The Buff-banded Rail is seen singly or in pairs in dense reeds and vegetation bordering many types of wetlands or crops. It makes widespread use of artificial wetlands like sewage ponds and drainage channels.

Seasonal movements: The Buff-banded Rail is resident and possibly locally nomadic, though little is known of these movements.

Feeding: The Buff-banded Rail feeds on crustaceans, molluscs, insects, seeds, fruit, frogs, carrion and refuse. It mostly feeds early in the morning and the evening.

Breeding: Breeding is poorly known, but the Buff-breasted Rail nests in long grass, tussocks, rushes or crops. It makes an unlined cup-shaped nest of grasses or reeds. Both parents incubate and the young will leave the nest within 24 hours. Both parents remain with the young, which usually feed themselves, though the female may feed them as well. Two broods may be raised in some seasons.

Calls: Loud creaky squeak when breeding but usually silent.

Minimum Size: 28cm

Maximum Size: 33cm

Average size: 31cm

Average weight: 130g

Breeding season: September to February

Clutch Size: 5 to 8 eggs

Incubation: 19 days

Nestling Period: 1 days

I've never worn a hoop in my eyebrow before. In all the 18 years I've had it pierced, it's always been a barbell. Well, I had no choice recently, as one of the glow-in-the-dark balls fell off the end of the barbell I had been wearing, and the barbell itself soon followed. This was the only thing I had to put in my eyebrow, as apparently every other eyebrow ring I have is missing.

I actually like it more than I expected though.

This is on the front, northwest end of the building, which will obviously have one of those pull up and park windows for special orders. While it's sad to see the old paint scheme go, this is bound to look nicer once they get it all painted!

During our short stay in Hua Hin we took the chance to visit the Khao Takiab hill, also known as monkey mountain or Chopstick hill. On top of the hill is the Wat Khao Lad temple, which is also known as the monkey temple, because of the many monkeys that live there. There are several ways to reach the top of the mountain and Khao Lad temple. One is walking the stairs, the other is taking the road by taxi, tuk tuk or motorbike. Walking your way up the stairs will give you some very rewarding views of Hua Hin, North of Khao Takiab. On a clear day, you can see as far as Cha-Am beach. A large number of macaque monkeys live on top of the mountain. This is an excellent opportunity to see them from very close and a lot better than in a zoo, since they live free here and are not contained in cages. The monkeys are curious animals and pretty cheeky. They like to grab things and if they know you have food somewhere, they will try to get it. Although they are used to people, they are still wild animals, do not try to touch them, as they might bite you. There are 23 species of macaques are widespread over Earth. Macaques have a very intricate social structure and hierarchy. If a macaque of a lower level in the social chain has eaten berries and none are left for a higher-level macaque, then the one higher in status can, within this social organization, remove the berries from the other monkey's mouth. Nearly all pet and captive macaques are carriers of the herpes B virus. This virus is harmless to macaques, but infections of humans, while rare, are potentially fatal, a risk that makes macaques unsuitable as pets.

The chopstick hill in Hua Hin in Thailand is also called Monkey Mountain. It is home to many macaques that possibly do not even know that they have chosen a spot with one of the best views of the coast. It was so easy to get there and super funny to see the monkeys. Especially the cool ones that jumped off the rocks into the water were great!

Khao Takiab is één van de populairste bezienswaardigheden in Hua Hin. De vertaling van Khoa Takiab is Chopstick Mountain. Het kan zijn dat het ook wordt aangeduid als Monkey Mountain. Dit komt door de vele makaken die op de berg leven. De berg is ook de thuisbasis van de tempel op de top van de heuvel. Het begin van de klim naar de tempel wordt gemarkeerd door een grote bel en een trap naar het belangrijkste heiligdom. Dit heiligdom heeft een structuur die lijkt op een pagode. Ze biedt een sensationeel uitzicht op het strand van Hua Hin. De tempel en haar bezoekers zijn niet bang van apen. Ze voelen zich er vrij rustig. Langs het strand waren deze Makaken, of ook wel Java-aap genoemd, behoorlijk aanwezig. Deze soort staat erom bekend dat hij zich graag in en om het water ophoudt. Ze lusten namelijk krab. De Makaken worden veel gebruikt voor medisch onderzoek, omdat de genen veel lijken op die van de mens. In 1990 werd ontdekt dat de makaken dragers zijn van het Herpes-B virus. De makaken zelf hebben er geen last van, maar als de mens ermee wordt geïnfecteerd, kan het de dood tot gevolg hebben.
