Nature and history were the main topics of this weekend, both integrated in combined hiking and biking trips. Beautiful weather invited us to visit Exter, Vlotho and Möllenbeck in Northwest Germany.
The windmill Exter, also called Lindemanns Mühle, is a mill in the Exter district of the East Westphalian town of Vlotho in the North Rhine-Westphalian district of Herford in Germany. It has been protected as a monument since 1985.
The mill in Exter is a Dutch windmill with louvre blades, which is surrounded by a wall on the north side. In the lower area it is equipped with a passage possibility. As a special feature, the mill now has an accessible wooden gallery on the south side in place of the previous wall, from which the view extends over the northern lip to the Teutoburg Forest. The mill was built with quarry sandstone from the area and has six floors including the basement. The visible mill tower is around 18 meters high, the pair of wings is around 23 meters long. The rotatable cap was initially turned by hand with a bar construction called Stert in the optimal wind direction. During the thorough renovation and redesign before the First World War, the stert was replaced by a compass rose on the cap. Originally, the mill was equipped with two grinding gears, one each for grist and rye. A wheat meal was added later. Today, the mill has only two milling operations for grist and rye.

Instead of building a splendid villa in the city like stucco, Exter was drawn to nature. In 1902 he bought an old farm in Übersee-Feldwies am Chiemsee, founded a painting school and lived and worked there until his death in 1939. His advertising sign on the door promised the paradise of the young people of the town: "Nudes in the open air" , one of its specialties. . Some schoolchildren crawled among the reeds to see how modern art is created ...

A mild and sunny Saturday in East-Westpahilia encouraged us to start our mill-project. Our area is covered with more than 40 mills, perfectly restored and maintenanced by volunteers. Our goal is to picture the most beautiful of them in the next couple of weeks. We finished the day with a breathtaking sunset lakeside in Bad Oeynhausen.
The National Gallery (Greek:Ethniki Pinakothiki) is an art museum on Vasilissis Sofias avenue, Athens, Greece. It is devoted to Greek and European art from the 14th century to the 20th century.
It was established in 1878 as a small collection of 117 works exhibited at the Athens University. In 1896, Alexandros Soutzos, a jurist and art lover, bequeathed his collection and estate to the Greek Government aspiring to the creation of an art museum. The museum opened in 1900 and the first curator was Georgios Jakobides, a famous Greek painter who was a member of the Munich School artistic movement.
The newly renovated building reopened after an 8 year refurbishment, on 24 March 2021, a day before the 200th anniversary of the Greek War of Independence.

The photo show the Lindemann Windmill built in 1850 of natural stone. In 1961 the wings were damaged by a storm and the mill was brought to the shutdown.
The association "from the grain to the bread" which maintains a mill court arrangement with water mill in Löhne-Wittel took over in 1985 the mill.
In 2004 in September the association “windmill Exter inc.” was founded to receive the monument unique in this region.
It concerns a Dutchman's mill.
As a working platform for the service an earthwork and on the valley side a wooden gallery serves on the mountain side; this is a big specific feature.
Earlier the cap had to be turned by hand. Later the cap was turned by the wind rose automatically in wind direction.
The wings are provided with flaps which can be opened by a hand device or be closed. The mill had three sets of millstones, one to grind coarsely (grain feed), one for rye and one for wheat (today not more available).

Adromeda and the Sea Monster
Marble
Domenico Guidi (1625-1701)
Italian (Rome), 1694
Andromeda is shown awaiting her delivery by the demigod Perseus from the jaws of the sea monster. The sculpture was commissioned from Guidi by Francesco II d'Este, Duke of Modena, who died before he could acquire it. In 1704, John Cecil, fifth Earl of Exter, took the sculpture to Burghley House in Northamptonshire, where it remained until 1958.

Designed as a classical French garden and opened in 1990, the Carroll and Milton Petrie European Sculpture Court serves as a framework for the presentation of large Italian and French sculptures, originally intended for the outdoors, dating from the seventeenth to the early twentieth century. The arcaded south wall of the court was inspired by the Orangerie of Versailles, and the north wall incorporates the Museum's 1888 Italianate facade and carriage entrance of granite and red brick.
The Metropolitan Museum of Art's permanent collection contains more than two million works of art from around the world. It opened its doors on February 20, 1872, housed in a building located at 681 Fifth Avenue in New York City. Under their guidance of John Taylor Johnston and George Palmer Putnam, the Met's holdings, initially consisting of a Roman stone sarcophagus and 174 mostly European paintings, quickly outgrew the available space. In 1873, occasioned by the Met's purchase of the Cesnola Collection of Cypriot antiquities, the museum decamped from Fifth Avenue and took up residence at the Douglas Mansion on West 14th Street. However, these new accommodations were temporary; after negotiations with the city of New York, the Met acquired land on the east side of Central Park, where it built its permanent home, a red-brick Gothic Revival stone "mausoleum" designed by American architects Calvert Vaux and Jacob Wrey Mold. As of 2006, the Met measures almost a quarter mile long and occupies more than two million square feet, more than 20 times the size of the original 1880 building.
In 2007, the Metropolitan Museum of Art was ranked #17 on the AIA 150 America's Favorite Architecture list.
The Metropolitan Museum of Art was designated a landmark by the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission in 1967. The interior was designated in 1977.
