As our programming partner Brooklyn Contra says "If Swing dancing and Square dancing met in a bar, you’d get Contra.” Contra dance is a powerful illustration of folk expression because of it’s ability to bring people together, even those who don’t know each other or interact. Brooklyn Contra, a local community based organization who’s mission is to organize Contra Dances in Brooklyn, has succeeded in tapping into a new generation of dancers in Brooklyn, and at the same time, built a community to care for its future. We are pleased to bring a free Contra dance to the Folk Feet 10th Anniversary. A half hour workshop will start the program off so please come early! Music will be provided by Strumbow Squeezeblow (Bill Christophersen, fiddle; Jody Kruskal, concertina, vocals; Trip Henderson, harmonica; Ross Harriss, guitar; Marco Brehm, bass). The dance leader and caller will be Mary Wesley.
Brooklyn Contra is a local, community-based organization, who’s mission is to organize Contra Dances in Brooklyn. All dances are organized by volunteers, who do everything from booking bands and callers to coordinating publicity to schlepping sound equipment. They support the dynamic cultural evolution of traditional music and dance and host a season of fun and accessible dances and exciting special events, as well as engaging educational programs for dancers, musicians, and callers. Brooklyn Contra creates an inclusive and safe environment in order to foster sustainable community growth. Joe Rinehart, Avia Moore, Carley Gooley serve on their board of directors. Brooklyn Contra is thankful for those folks who donate their time and talents to make our dances run smoothly. If you would like to help out please email us at brooklyncontra@gmail.com.

"It's not the face, but the expressions on it. It's not the voice, but what you say. It's not how you look in that body, but the thing you do with it. You are beautiful."
