Example of an asbestos textile gasket used as a seal for a vintage light fixture within a former painting-booth. Although the fixture's cover is absent, the asbestos gasket was designed to seal-out potentially explosive paint fumes during pressurized application of paint within the enclosed space of the booth.

This was taken out of an operating room in a building at a mental institution. The building has been torn down at this point, but I can only imagine the weird experiments they did on patients back in the '50s and '60s. They didn't treat patients all that well back then.

The conspicuous concrete silos in the Junction were built to withstand flour explosions. Originally home to a large flour mill (Campbell Flour), most of the buildings on the site seen in this aerial photo were demolished in the 1990s, including the structure that connected the silos. The explosion proof construction explains why they're still standing. The demolition costs would have been as conspicuous as the structures themselves, and it is why in my opinion they were left standing. Though it doesn't explain why the nondescript adjacent warehouse was left standing.
The scars of weathering suggest abandonment, but they capture imagination and interest and aren't going down without a fight. This is the eastern, unused silo. The western one (closer to Keele Street) was used by St. Mary's Cement until 2010 and has actually been maintained. Now Lafarge has taken over. It is slightly larger than this one, though it doesn't have the variation in cylinder size that the eastern silo features (seen in the darkness on the left above).

Appleton Company Explosion Proof AA-51 Series. The green enamel is in great condition and there are a couple of marks on the inside, but that adds to the character of the lamp. It's been modified to be used on a table. The gooseneck allows for a wall mount if desired.
