This year, I finished my 100 miles on my wife's birthday. She and I camped at Nichol's Lake South Campground in Newaygo County. The campground has the trail going through it both north and south, so it lends itself for some nice hiking days. We were also looking for morels (no luck), but did find about 5 pounds of spring oyster mushrooms. We also adopted a section of the NCT and love going to our piece of the trail to work.

Night-night from magic-land.. Yesss, I'm up wayyy late, but just not tired ~ these long days at this latitude! After 2yrs away, my bod is still re-adjusting. Thoughts of a few days ago, outside-time to round out the long day ::: smudges of birds in flight, animals in fields grazing lazily in the 10pm sunset, illuminated clouds almost like turf-smoke chimneys.. Sweet dreams, all, from that place where night awaits the morning💋💤

I started this challenge back in April with my wife and my new pup Ace. Ace was just shy of 1 year old when we started. Unfortunately just a week or two later after reaching his 1 year birthday Ace died unexpectedly. Sadly we had only logged a few short hikes towards the Hike 100 challenge before his passing. However Ace had been a tried and true hiking and camping companion since he was 12 weeks old, so despite my heartbreak and grief I decided that my wife and I would do our best to finish what we had started in Ace's honor. In fact it was Ace who was responsible for motivating my wife to try hiking despite her discomfort and it turned out to be one of the best decisions she has ever made. In addition to my emotional challenges of losing my pup I also had to make sure that most of our hikes were in small mileage amounts as my wife suffers from severe Rheumatoid Arthritis so she is not able to do long distance hikes. With the help of our new pup Drake we managed to finish.
