Spent an hour in freezing weather to take some long exposure shots in daylight, only to like this shot I took with my phone on my way back to the car better.
Waited 15 minutes standing on barefoot on sharp tiny rocks, waiting for a couple guys smoking weed to get out of this shot.
Gillard evening laps with my social distancing buddy @eddieamstaffy . It’s funny how you get all hyped up on MTB videos all winter long and the further away from your last ride the bigger the jumps you did in your head become. Then you form all these super unrealistic goals for your next riding season until you stand on top of a jump and calculate all the rehab work/time a crash would take. Fuck, getting old sucks. Fun was still being had, even at a seniors pace, although no air miles were collected. I need to learn how to fly.

My youngest really wanted to go bike riding around the neighbourhood last night, but between my wife prepping her bread for bread day and me having to leave for nightshift neither one of us could hack it. So I promised her a nice long bike ride the next morning along the Myra Trestles with a breakfast picnic . What the girls didn’t know was that we were going to have zero degrees °C, snow covered trails and that Dad was going to turn it into a home schooling lesson. Measuring distances, converting units and problem solving questions like: “The total distance of our bike ride this morning was 3.93km. Measure the total distance in meters of each of the following: trestles, tunnels and on gravel riding. Refer to your notes”.

Went out to Gillard to continue on a skinny that I started I few weeks back. I was clearing trails when I saw this fallen tree perfectly situated along side a trail bend which would have made an awesome 200m alternative and would join back into the trail. Was gonna make a skinny, to a seesaw to a skinny feature. Sadly someone wasn’t too happy with the idea because when I got there my work was all cut up. I had my bike with me too so instead I went to see if my balls have had any growth and sure enough I managed to check off two new big ( to me ) features ( the slow-mo parts of the video ). Only problem with checking off scary features is that it moves features that were on the “impossible” ; “not in my lifetime” or “you’re too old for this shit” list to the “possible” ; “you got this” list 🙈.

We were planning to do Pincushion yesterday but the weather wasn’t really cooperating and then I got called into work. But today after I woke up from my post nightshift nap I saw the sun streaming in through the windows and knew it was going to be beautiful up there. I started charging and packing my gear and waited for my girls to return home. Kids didn’t feel like leaving the house again so they encouraged us to go without them. Wow, I don’t remember the last time we got 5hrs to ourselves. The hike was a bit sketchy with all the snow and ice but we had the entire mountain to ourselves.

My man @darcywardo hit me up yesterday and said he wants to join me on my morning Eddie walk today. We decided to run up Carrot Mountain on the westside, I think I've never ran it up and down this fast. He also picked up his @rylo yesterday and he let me play around with it and I even got to download the footage to experience the post editing fun you can have. Amazing little machine and I'm totally sold! Of course what would be a hike without some mace swings up top. Although I might have lost a nipple up there. Sadly on the way down I got an OT shift awarded, no rest for the wicket. Was suppose to go riding with the boys😢.

Finally managed to be alert enough to load the backpacks after the kids went to bed last night and even got out on the trails today to break in the hiking boots and packs. Nothing spectacular, just 6.6km with 350m of Elevation. But it was enough to play around with the packs and make them sit just right on our backs. We’ll try to take a longer hike once a week from now on to get ready for our multi day adventures this summer.

Third time is a charm. First time I rode Oblivion, it was pouring rain and my camera froze up, second time it destroyed my derailleur and ripped through my back wheel costing me $600.- in total repairs. Today it was perfect 🙏.
Good company with my buddy @awger , mans best friend running alongside and the cherry on top was hitting that golden hour just as we start descending. Just as the name indicates already, Oblivion is in the middle of nowhere, a trail that should not be and yet there it is, a perfect balance between speed, tech & gnar. It’s a pain in the ass to shuttle to but a must ride at least once a year 👌.

Nothing better to shake off the last bit of blues then some early morning solitude and freezing your face off to feel alive again. Now usually you wouldn’t find the words early morning and Art in the same sentence but heading out to the cross country ski hills after a nightshift is acceptable. Was the first one in the parking lot and found the grooming operator trying to get his truck out of a ditch. He asked me if I can jump behind the wheel and steer his truck while he tows it out with the groomer. It was and older truck, and as I jump in I realize it’s a manual. Jesus Christ, I haven’t driven stick since my days living in Germany. Didn’t even stall it once 👌. It was a cold crispy morning, -7 °C. I had the trails all to myself and me and the groomer kept crossing paths. Feeling 100% again and to think that I almost didn’t go, drove already two blocks home when I turned the ship around and forced myself to head to the hill.

We thought that last week was gonna be our last time up on Big White but I guess we were mistaken. On Tuesday they had another dump of 8cm of snow and the temps stayed on the lower side too.
It was awesome to go from sandals, t-shirt & shorts in Kelowna to Snowboarding up at Big White . We also managed to practice our toe edge carves and are slowly getting there, painfully slow but we are getting there 👊. We definitely decided to get us some season passes for next winter 🎉.

A great way to spend an afternoon is to enjoy the views over Kelowna and Okanagan Lake from the Myra Canyon. This incredibly scenic portion of the Kettle Valley Railway (KVR) features 18 trestle bridges and 2 tunnels, originally built at the turn of the last century, and rebuilt again (near exact replica) between 2003 and 2008 when the Okanagan Mountain Park Fire claimed 12 of the trestle bridges. To ride in the Myra is to glimpse history - how a steam train would have made its way through this steep-walled canyon along a railroad that was no more than a 2% rail grade (to accommodate the steam train technology of the day), and how workers from around the world would have toiled to construct the original railway through some pretty uncompromising terrain. Amazing.
There are a few ways to enjoy the Myra Canyon, which stretches about 12 km from end to end (so double that for the return journey). You might choose to walk a portion of it by foot, as many visitors to the area do. You might choose to rent bikes up at the Myra to take in the full canyon. Or you might choose to enjoy a fully-guided tour of the Myra Canyon with a guide who knows his stuff.
If you wanted to rent bikes and cycle the Myra yourself, there's a bike rental business conveniently located right at the parking lot from Myra Forest Service Rd. The rental company is called, Myra Canyon Bike Rentals, and they have a very handy map on their website which shows visitors exactly how to get up to the Myra Canyon and explore on your own.
If you prefer to get the background and history of the area while on tour, you might want to take a guided tour with Monashee Adventure Tours or through Myra Canyon Bike Rentals. Monashee's Ed Kruger has been doing tours in the Myra Canyon for years, and he is a history buff who can regale you with all kinds of stories about the building of the railroad through the Myra Canyon. It's a great way to get the inside scoop on this treasured piece of Canadian railroad history. Ed will provide transportation to the Myra Canyon as well as bike rentals through his tours.
Kettle Valley Railroad
The Myra Canyon portion of the Kettle Valley Railway (KVR) is quite high in elevation and really gives some beautiful valley views. Just check out Instagram and scan through #exploreKelowna to see hundreds of photos of this popular shutterbug location!
You'll find that the air is a little cooler up here than in town, which can be a nice bonus during the hot summer months for those looking to escape the heat. The 18 trestle bridges are spectacular and mind-boggling when one considers that the originals would have been built almost entirely by hand. This is definitely an inspiring and eye-opening half-day trip to enjoy when visiting Kelowna.
For a bit of background on the Myra Canyon, visit the Myra Canyon Restoration Society website.
Finally a ride with the boys again! We couldn’t wait any longer for spring! Forecast calls for above 0 temps from now on, so not much longer and we’ll be riding dirt again. But for today we had an epic fat bike ride on a bluebird day! We started out with -10C but it warmed up quick and so did the snow, towards the end of the ride it got wet and heavy. It was also @eddieamstaffy ‘s first time biking with us. Couldn’t ask for a better way to finish my vacation.

Adam took me out climbing to give me a little refresher. I haven’t been out on a wall since nursing school back in 2002 🙈. Still had my old climbing shoes from Germany. First route was the Gomer Line, a 2 star classic! 5.9 B Grade 25m. Squeeze Me In, 5.9 B Grade 26m was the second one. Absolutely exhilarating feeling, me and Laura have been thinking of buying some climbing gear and getting into it. Next time Adam is gonna take me to the boulderfields for some bouldering.

Went out to go chase the sun today and found it just 30min outside of town. Forestry road was plowed all the way to the water reservoir, so I was able to drive just 2 turns shy of the trailhead to Christie Falls. Still ended up being a 17km round trip snowshoe trek and I didn't quite make it to the bottom of the waterfall. The last climb down is treacherous on it's best day and without a rope there was no way to safely rappel down to the bottom of the waterfall in this snow.

Summer time is finally here and we took the kids on their first day trip. We packed up the bikes and drove up to Oyama and rode the rail trail along the Kalamalka Lake. I got to test my knee and I had no limitations. There was no elevation so I couldn’t see how my calf would do. So I guess I’m ready to ride again as long as I don’t crash 🤔😂.

After wrestling all day with bouncy castles, Eddie & I drove up to Smith Creek for a quick loop of all my favourites. I believe it’s been 2 years since I’ve last been up at Smith Creek. So much has changed, lots of wooden features disappeared but were replaced with dirt and some other features got a refresh. Also houses are being build all along the dirt road soon to be suburb road.

After work, I went to Kelowna for some errands, so I decided to stop by Knox Mountain to grab a couple of shots from up above. I never regret going up there. The view of the city and Okanagan Lake is fantastic.
Had @coty_hardy cruise through town with his sidekick Hero so I took them on a little hike down to the Christie Falls. The falls have already substantially shrunk since our last visit but today's point of attraction was an abandoned hut not too far away from the falls. I'm not sure if we didn't go far enough or if someone has charred down the entire cottage but what you see in the video is all that we found and we didn't really see another trail leading anywhere. Judging by the heavy wood burning stove in the middle of a large charred rectangle, it might be that someone burned the place down.

Have always wanted to see what this Chute Lake was all about and asked if the kids would be up for an adventure. They didn’t like the idea of a 1 hr forestry road drive but when I sweetened the deal with Mucho Burrito they were all in. The lake didn’t disappoint and we had a blast exploring all the little corners. Eddie swam along side us for the first little stretch and then went to chill in the truck while we went to see what was behind the bridge. The kids had such a good time they didn’t want to go home. The rec site looks amazing too for some camping.

Chiefs captain creates scholarship in honour of Grant Sheridan
Myles Mattila is wearing the ‘C’ as the leader of the Kelowna Chiefs this year.
Off the ice, he’s been an exemplary leader in many facets of life for some time and he’s back at it again with a newly-created scholarship.
The Remembering Grant Sheridan Scholarship honours Grant Sheridan, the former owner of the Chiefs who passed away this summer, and it’ll be available to all KIJHL players.

It’s been created through the MindRight for Athletes Society, another creation of Mattila, and will recognize a player for their hockey commitment, community involvement and academic achievement.
The scholarship will be initiated during the Chiefs’ home opener at Rutland Arena on Friday night and more details about it will become available as the season goes on.
“It is with heavy hearts the Kelowna Chiefs will be playing our home opener in memory of Grant. There will not be a dry eye in the house,” says Mattila.
“Grant was a very special person who will be dearly missed by all. Grant and I had very similar fundamental beliefs in the core values of hockey, education, and community involvement, which included mental health.”
Sheridan presented Mattila with the team’s Scholastic Player of the Year award after the 2017-18 season.

available to Kootenay International Junior Hockey League (KIJHL) players.
The scholarship will be initiated, administered and supported through MindRight for Athletes Society,
which Mattila has created. The scholarship recognizes the recipient for their hockey commitment,
community involvement and academic achievement. As the season progresses, details to apply for the
scholarship will be announced. The Remembering Grand Sheridan Scholarship will be initiated during the Kelowna Chiefs home opener at Rutland Arena on Sept. 20 at 7 p.m.
“It is with heavy hearts the Kelowna Chiefs will be playing our home opener in memory of Grant. There
will not be a dry eye in the house,” says Mattila. “ Grant was a very special person who will be dearly
missed by all. Grant and I had very similar fundamental beliefs in the core values of hockey, education,
and community involvement, which included mental health.” They also shared similar entrepreneurial and social support interests in technology – helping those in need get the support they require; not for profit support for the community and investing in the future.”
At a young age, Mattila discovered his passion for mental health. He quickly began to embody the
necessary support attributes and characteristics by taking initiative, risks and generating hope for
advancement on this issue. He has worked tirelessly for mental health advocacy by founding
MindRight.info , and spearheading a summit. This self-developed wellness program is focused on early
intervention and is intended on educating individuals about their own mental health, and the health of
others through resources and connections to community services.
“Grant made me aware that he believed in me and he was proud of my representation of the Kelowna
Chiefs,” says Mattila, a third-year business student, who earned the 2017 Chair of the Board Award for
being Humanitarian of the Year from B.C. Hockey, and achieved the Prince George Secondary School
Citizenship Award of 2017. “I’m very fortunate to have met Grant Sheridan, he was a great owner,
general manager, good friend and mentor.”
