The Pancake Rocks at Punakaiki were formed 30 million years ago when tiny fragments of dead marine creatures and plants landed on the seabed 2 km below. Over time, water pressure caused them to solidify into alternating layers of harder and softer rock. Over time, seismic action lifted the limestone above the seabed where the softer layers eroded leaving a "pancake" like stack of harder limestone. It’s somewhere that has to be seen to be believed, truly a #nzmustdo spot!
