Got a nice surprise with some fresh blooms right next to the overlook here at East Fork last weekend. I thought I might still be a week or two early, but it was nice to see that glowing pink. And the sky wasn’t too bad either.

Linville Light Show - FEEL FREE TO SHARE!
Typically, it takes me about 15 minutes to walk a mile. If you factor in the terrain on the Hawksbill trail in the Linville Gorge, you can certainly count that out. The trail to Hawksbill is roughly 1.5 miles up and back (0.8 miles one way), but it ascends a steep 700 ft in 0.8 miles to reach the peak of 4,009 ft. To say the hike is strenuous is an understatement, in my opinion. But don’t be fooled; the strenuous part is only near the end. Once you ascend to the peak, your effort is rewarded with one of the most beautiful 360 degree panoramic views in the Gorge. Rock outcroppings frame the iconic Table Rock and Shortoff Mountain peaks to the south, the Linville River 2,000 feet below, and the beautiful and rocky western face of the gorge in front of you. If you’re lucky, you’ll get a spectacular light show as the clouds roll over the ridges of the Blue Ridge Mountains, creating some of the most beautiful sunrises and sunsets imaginable. I visited on December 7, 2015 and was lucky enough to see a beautiful show of sundays bursting through the clouds just minutes before sunset. This photo is another image in a series of sun rays portraits of the gorge from my winter visit. Enjoy, and stay tuned for more!

Paddy's Creek Falls on Yellow Fork - FEEL FREE TO SHARE!

If you're a lover of the Linville Gorge and you've never heard of, or met, the "Gorge Rats," make it a point to become friends with them. I get the distinct pleasure of hiking to beautiful places that many don't get to see when I'm in their company. Today, we ventured to Yellow Fork Falls near Paddy's Creek. Honestly, in the almost 100 waterfalls that I have seen, this is truly one of the most beautiful. The hike is not easy and the trail is hard to find in places, not to mention a few sketchy creek crossings. However, I would do it all over again to see the incredible beauty I did today. I want to thank my friends and fellow gorge lovers for being such lovely tour guides today, and for all of the beautiful places you've shown me and the places we have yet to travel. Happy trails!
Snowy Sunset at Lake James - FEEL FREE TO SHARE!
Prints at: www.cathyandersonphotography.com
On the weekend of January 23, 2016, Burke County, NC witnessed some of the largest snow totals seen in recent history. Winter Storm Jonas dumped quite a lot of snow across the Eastern Seaboard, and North Carolina's mountains received an average of 12-16" in some places. Amidst all of the snow and grocery store chaos for the last loaf of bread and gallon of milk, a beautiful sunset was settling across the peaceful Lake James shoreline. It is always so lovely to see something so tranquil amidst the chaos of a snow storm, especially something this beautiful. Check out a photo from that snowy January evening as the sunset lit up the skies above beautiful Lake James.

On my recent trip to the Outer Banks, I was afforded a wide gamut of weather scenarios. From fog, to starry nights, to clear sunny days, this sunset proved to be one of only a few times I saw the sun during my December trip, and the only time I was blessed to watch a sunset. It was well worth the wait, as all Hatteras Island sunsets are.

The Olson Trail is an “unofficial” offshoot trail from the main Shortoff Mountain Trail that begins at Wolfpit Road, near Lake James in Burke County, NC. It begins just after the juncture with the Mountain to Sea Trail (MST) at a small tree trunk marked by ribbon, traveling 0.66 miles as a one-way trail. Not for the faint of heart, the trail is recommended only for experienced hikers as it requires travelers to hug the side of 500 ft cliffs in places. It travels along the face of and just below the beautiful cliffs of Shortoff Mountain, making the unique views well worth the effort and trip, especially the visit to John’s Kitchen, an ancient cave once utilized by Native Americans (known from the ancient artifacts once found within the cave). The cave overlooks the western rim of the Linville Gorge and Pinnacle Mountain, offering views of both, as well as the Linville River below and Lake James to the south. Just beyond John’s Kitchen, the Olson Trail rejoins the Shortoff Mountain Trail as it ascends to the Shortoff Pinnacle. Check out a winter view of John’s Kitchen and the amazing ice formations within the cave.

Cape Hatteras Milky Way - FEEL FREE TO SHARE!
One of my favorite memories of my dad is his declaration that he was strong enough to cart his little girl (that’s me!) all the way up the 268 steps of the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse. The Outer Banks was always one of his favorite getaways, and I’ve adopted it as one of my second homes.
The Cape Hatteras Lighthouse is steeped in history and has become a national icon, highly recognizable to coastal enthusiasts throughout the country. It’s black and white spiral pattern is iconic on the barrier islands and has stood at its current location since 1999. It had to be moved from its original location near the surf because the ocean had done so much erosion damage to the beach and its foundation. The lighthouse move has been deemed one of the greatest engineering feats of its time, because engineers were trusted with moving the tallest brick lighthouse structure in the USA over 1500 feet from its original location along the shoreline. The current lighthouse (the second version) was originally built in 1871 and stands 210 feet tall. It watches over an area of the North Carolina coast called Diamond Shoals, the resting place for many shipwrecks throughout the years. The area is infamously known as the “Graveyard of the Atlantic” because the treacherous waters sank so many ships.
Lighthouses shine at night, but many people haven’t seen this beautiful building at night under the stars. Check out this photos of Cape Hatteras Lighthouse at night as the Milky Way floats through a sky full of stars.

Winter at John's Kitchen - FEEL FREE TO SHARE
John's Kitchen is an intriguing cave found along the Olson Trail on Shortoff Mountain, overlooking the south end of the Linville Gorge and Pinnacle Mountain across the way. The cave provides protection from the howling winds familiar to hikers up on the mountain and offers a large, but rocky area for campsites and fires. The striations in the rock formations are mesmerizing and beautiful. The way to the cave is not the easiest to find, as it is part of the "unofficial" Olson Trail, which branches off from the main Shortoff Mountain trail beginning at Wolfpit Road. Easily missed, it is a trail that is not for the faint of heart. Often times, the trail is merely inches wide and forces hikers to hug the side of a rock face. For the brave hikers who make the trek, a respite in the cave is a welcome sight.

Bodie Island Lighthouse is the second accessible lighthouse on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. OBX, as the barrier islands are affectionally called, are also know as the Graveyard of the Atlantic because of the many shipwrecks that have occurred throughout the years. The installation of lighthouses along the barrier islands was crucial for navigation throughout the shallow seas. The lighthouse was built in 1872 and is 156 ft tall, watching over Roanoake Sound and the northern part of the Cape Hatteras National Seashore. It is easily accessible from NC Highway 12, the road that spans the length of the Outer Banks from Corolla down to the Crystal Coast (Cape Lookout). The public can climb to the top of the lighthouse, making it a popular destination for families and tourists. The name of the lighthouse is actually pronounced like the word "body," not BOW-DEE. The lighthouse's light began as a first order Fresnel lens, but is now an electric lamp beacon that lights up intermittently (not constantly rotating like it's famous sibling Cape Hatteras Lighthouse).
From Nags Head, NC, head south on NC Highway 12 for 4-5 miles and turn right onto Bodie Island Lighthouse Rd. You will see two old buildings at the entrance of the road.

This view point has always been challenging for me. If you are familiar with the area, you know this spot most likely. Taken from the peak of Hawksbill in the Linville Gorge. I usually shoot this gorge area with sidelight as it accentuates the depth and helps create a ton of texture on the rock formations and in the gorge. And it usually just looks more appealing when shot side-lit. This view point with the sun backlighting the scene I feel like flattens the scene in a way and it’s always a nightmare to edit and return it to the color/feel of that moment. I think with this specific shot I got closer than I’ve gotten so far in showing the feel of this gorgeous location near sunset. Someday I’ll get the type of shot I really want from here, but for now this will do just fine.

Foggy Bodie Island Light - FEEL FREE TO SHARE!

During my visit to the Outer Banks in December 2015, I was fortunate enough to capture many different iconic fixtures throughout the barrier islands during foggy weather. I'm used to sunny days and clear nights, so the change of pace in weather was truly special. In this image of Bodie Island Lighthouse, I love the juxtaposition of the ghostly figure in front of the lighthouse while the rest of the landscape is ensconced in fog. It gives an eery feel and different spin to very familiar scene. Bodie Island Lighthouse is located a few miles south of popular Nags Head and Kitty Hawk, making it an easy trip for all travelers.
