A family of Western Kingbirds perched on a wire. The parent bird, with its distinctive gray head, yellow belly, and white-edged tail, is accompanied by two fledglings learning to navigate their environment. The fledglings' slightly fluffier plumage and open beaks suggest they are still reliant on the parent for food and guidance.

The Aurora Borealis fills the night sky over Whitehorse on March 1st, 2015.

The whooping crane (Grus americana), the tallest North American bird, is an endangered crane species named for its whooping sound. Along with the sandhill crane, it is one of only two crane species found in North America. The whooping crane's lifespan is estimated to be 22 to 24 years in the wild. After being pushed to the brink of extinction by unregulated hunting and loss of habitat to just 21 wild and two captive whooping cranes by 1941, conservation efforts have led to a limited recovery.

This railway bridge is pretty much the first thing you see as you drive into Tatamagouche. I have shot it before in Winter and it looked good, but in the fall finery it was stunning.

Saw this Mama Merganser taking her 14 chicks from a nearby lagoon to get used to the fast flowing river waters. She would lead them in the river carefully, keeping them close to the bank away from the strong current and deep waters.

You'll need sharp eyes to catch sight of an American Bittern. This streaky, brown and buff heron can materialize among the reeds, and disappear as quickly, especially when striking a concealment pose with neck stretched and bill pointed skyward. These stealthy carnivores stand motionless amid tall marsh vegetation, or patiently stalk fish, frogs, and insects.

Snowy Owls stand out for their beauty and intelligence. These strikingly beautiful Arctic owls have a range of impressive skills. If you are lucky enough to find one, don't approach too closely, as the birds are stressed enough looking for food. View from a distance through binoculars or long-lens camera. With its long, earlike tufts, intimidating yellow-eyed stare, and deep hooting voice, the Great Horned Owl is the quintessential owl of storybooks. This powerful predator can take down birds and mammals even larger than itself.

So perfect it seems planned, this road-accessible cascade is just outside the little village of Kakisa. It occurs where the Kakisa River jumps off an ancient coral reef, forming a crescent-shaped, 17-metre-high curtain of spray.

The Covehead Harbour Lighthouse is square, tapered, 8.2 metre (26.9 ft) tall wooden tower surmounted by a square, wooden lantern. It is located among the sand dunes of Prince Edward Island National Park of Canada, on the beach just to the east of the entrance into Covehead Bay. It is the second lighthouse on the site, built in 1975 as a replacement for the original tower.

During the winter months, moose live almost solely on twigs and shrubs. Winter is a time of hunger for moose. They restrict their food intake and limit their activity to save energy.

I think I am suffering from photographic withdrawal. I have not done much exploring as of late and maybe I just miss the snow. But as I review some pics from the past I get the urge to explore again.

An Osprey may log more than 160,000 migration miles during its 15-to-20-year lifetime.

Ospreys are also excellent anglers. Ospreys can catch fish on at least 1 in every 4 dives, with success rates sometimes as high as 70 percent.

Most commonly known as the “friendship flower,” the yellow rose holds significance for a long-lasting friendship. While yellow roses are a perfect gift to symbolize your strong platonic connection, it is not suggested to give them to someone you are romantically interested in.

There are wildlife encounters, and then there are moments like this one. A Great Grey Owl fills the entire frame in a breathtaking head-on approach, its massive wingspan spread wide against a stunning backdrop of boreal forest and distant mountain peaks. At nearly 1.5 metres from wingtip to wingtip, the sheer scale of this magnificent bird is fully on display here, every barred feather illuminated by bright daylight in extraordinary detail.

What strikes the viewer immediately is that single piercing yellow eye, fixed with absolute and unwavering intensity directly down the lens. This is a bird that commands complete attention and knows it. The Great Grey Owl is the world's largest owl by length, a silent and formidable hunter of the northern boreal forests, and yet there is something almost mythical about its presence, earning it the well deserved nickname "Phantom of the North."

ONR 1730 lights up the rails as it clatters towards the CN diamond under a dramatic sky at Rouyn-Noranda, Quebec.

Hard to believe that this place has been abandoned and in bad shape for over 10 years. Gorgeous place.

A stunning shorebird with a long upturned bill, the elegant American Avocet prefers wide-open spaces of the west, lake shores and tidal flats, where they wade in the shallows. They often feed while leaning forward, with the tips of their bills in the water and slightly open, filtering tiny food items from just below the surface. Sometimes a flock will feed this way in unison, walking forward, swinging their heads rhythmically from side to side. Copyright © Kim Toews/All Rights Reserved.

Merlin pairs have been seen teaming up to hunt large flocks of waxwings: one Merlin flushes the flock by attacking from below; the other comes in moments later to take advantage of the confusion.

The Bald Eagle has been the national emblem of the United States since 1782 and a spiritual symbol for native people for far longer than that. Their white-feathered heads gleam in contrast to their chocolate-brown body and wings.

Unique among North American raptors for its diet of live fish and ability to dive into water to catch them, Ospreys are common sights soaring over shorelines, patrolling waterways, and standing on their huge stick nests, white heads gleaming. These large, rangy hawks do well around humans and have rebounded in numbers following the ban on the pesticide DDT. Hunting Ospreys are a picture of concentration, diving with feet outstretched and yellow eyes sighting straight along their talons.
