One of the most frustrating things about my camera is that the images it captures are never sharp enough. By “sharp enough” I mean my eyes sees them sharper! So last week I bought a super macro lens called Raynox DCR-250, and I think it improved my close up pictures dramatically. This can best be seen in the lower navy/purple marker (beside the black marker). The details (sharpness) on that marker, and a couple others, are amazing. I even uploaded the original image just in case you are interested in seeing it in its original full size.

For a price of $54 I think the Raynox DCR-250 is a very good lens in that it is very sharp, however its depth of field is paper thin: anything beyond or closer than that imaginary line is a blur. This is not completely a bad thing if you want everything else except what you are focusing on to be a blur, but that means it is almost impossible to use without a tripod, and forget about using it if it is windy outside! (Unless you have a very good friend who is willing to hold a tree branch for you! LOL!) I think I am keeping this lens. I have a feeling it will come in very handy in the future.

I was aiming for a shot like those used in stock images which I really like because they are so simple and right to the point! I hope I achieved that :)

PS: I must admit, those markers are the best $1 I’ve spent in my life!

Fireworks explode over Cedar Creek Lake in Gun Barrel City, Texas.

July 4, 2012

I spent the evening at the Phillies minor league team game and during the 8th inning they announced there would be fireworks at the end of the game- which was a surprise to me! Not only could I not recall the settings to shoot fireworks, I only had the telephoto lens with me. I phoned a friend for the settings and I set up the tripod and promptly broke it (this is the 2nd one for those of you keeping count) by loosening a screw too much and not getting it to go back on. So, here is what I got without the tripod. I was really close and the 70-300mm lens was all wrong. I used the timer for some and they came out better but of course I missed a lot. Not what they are supposed to look like but next time I have to haul the heavy duty one with me. Drat!

Went out and had a bit of a play tonight. Experimented with some firecrackers I've had for a while. I've never shot fireworks before and I didn't really know what the ones I had would do or how they'd look. It was a nice surprise 😃😎

Merry Christmas everyone!! I had no time today so I took this and it was inspired by Atmoic Turquoise. I really miss my mustang but she'll be off the road for a while still due to vandalism. Hope everyone had a happy holiday!!

Pussy willow on the move

These photos were taken on a recent shoot with Jo-Ann on a farm in Durbanville. It was towards the end of another rainy day in Cape Town, as the sky was starting to clear. I don't think I have ever seen such an interesting cloud formation.

Near my parents' home is a place called George Lake. It is really more of a swamp than a lake with many islands dotted all over it. The water is rather shallow, and this vast realm is home to a great variety of animals. A local senior built a paddle wheeler for the specific purpose of touring George Lake and for the past 8 years he has given anyone who wants to come along tours. He doesn't charge any money for these tours, but he does accept donations for gas money. I have only known about this for the past 3 years and have gone every year since discovering this tour.

This year my aunt and uncle and my mom and I went on a tour with him. It was extremely cold and windy that day, but we wore several layers of warm clothes and winter coats. It was totally worth braving the cold, because that day on our 3 hour expedition we saw eagles, a cow moose with calf, several deer - one with a fawn, many grebes and ducks (with babies), some grebes nests with eggs in them, and beavers everywhere! On a previous expedition in 2009 we saw a bear. So, I have a lot of pictures from that day to post (sometime). Today I thought I would show my best beaver shots. I am very pleased with how they came out. The beavers would "explode" repeatedly so I had plenty of chances to shoot them in action.

This is the last year Steve will be running his paddle wheeler, The Knotty Otter, so I am hoping to get out again on it some time this summer.

We took several shots of Anni blowing on the flour and although the flour looked great, all the effort of Anni's expression as she blew hard, wasn't the right 'look'. So, I found this test shot taken earlier and matted in the flour from a later shot.

There is a small portable strobe set to low power directly behind Anni, a low powered strobe to cam left with a blue gel and set back picking up the flour and a large softbox camera left.
