I sometimes struggle to explain what I do to people. I build sponges, really tiny ones. So small the stuff I put inside them is about 1/500th the size of the shortest wave of visible light (blue!). On some level, its really simple to tell you what I do; I take a pair of pliers, I pick up a ball of coloured pigment, and I carefully put it in my sponge so it soaks it up. The difficulty of communicating my job- in a way, is the careful act of translation it takes to convert my world to the world of a molecule; where the rules are different. In that world, actions are performed everywhere, all at once. You don’t predict where the sand will drop, you monitor the tides. Out of that castrophony comes a special kind of order; and I find that neat… most of the time.
