Sometimes you give up too early and forget you have options, no matter what others have you believe. Let me explain.

The goal of most photographers is to get it right, in the camera, at the time of shooting. This is sometimes referred to as SOOC or Straight Out Of the Camera. I guess SOOTC was just a bit too pedantic for the person who titled it originally, considering that SOOC, as a concept could be perceived as being very pedantic.

In fairness, SOOC is my goal too, but I'm not a pedant, at least I try not to be :-) This particular shot of the Keeper of the Plains, a sculpture in Wichita, Kansas is a case in point. No matter how hard I tried I simply couldn't get this right in the camera, the lighting is all wrong. I normally shoot Blue Moment shots of intensely floodlit buildings and, while this is a very pretty scene, the original photo of it at the bottom here is not lit, at all. The level of light in the sky and the level of light on the foreground are just too far apart to make it work. I could bring in an enormous bank of floodlights to brighten the bottom part but I don't have that kind of budget!

So I walked away, feeling I had missed the shot.

Back home in Ireland, musing over the images taken, I decided to forget about SOOC and fix it in the computer. I knew that I had a huge amount of latitude in the Raw file I was shooting, but I didn't realise how much Adobe Lightroom, my Raw processor of choice, would actually let me recover. With a few tweaks in the right place, with the right tools, I was able turn a shot that was pretty useless into one that is more than adequate. In fact the corrected scene is much more like my eye saw it at the time.

I've now come up with a new acronym: SOOTCAIITCTFWTCCDATT. Straight Out Of The Camera And Immediately Into The Computer To Fix What The Camera Couldn't Do At The Time.

Mmmm, maybe it won't catch on.

My friend from Marocco explained me that in his country, and even more in few others country of north Africa, some women are beaten if they cheat on their husband. It is of course not the case of all the women in Marocco, but it might still be a larger number than in my country or in North America. That's why I wanted to show that woman don't have the same rights everywhere in the world. A woman would probably not be treated the same in india and in United states.

What do you do when you are served with a lawsuit pursuant to the Hague convention?

You and your spouse are having difficulties. One of the things you don’t agree on is where your children should be growing up. Maybe you and your spouse moved somewhere together to try to work things out. Maybe your spouse agreed for your kids to live in a different country than them, or maybe you recently moved and are now going through a divorce…. But the bottom line is, you are served with a lawsuit that says that you are being sued pursuant to the Hague convention regarding the return of children to their rightful country. You are being sued civilly for kidnapping and you didn’t even know that you had kidnapped your child(ren) (hopefully).

What does it mean? What do you do?

The first thing that you have to understand is what this suit is really about. The idea behind a suit pursuant to the Hague convention is a suit about which country should have the jurisdiction to make decisions regarding your children. Custody. Child support. Education. Medical care. The general rule is that the last place where both parents agreed was the permanent home of the children will have the jurisdiction to make those decisions.

However there are exceptions to the general rule.
