Burlington Northern EMD GP39M No. 2805 leads westbound BN “Expediter” train 41 out of Savanna, Illinois, on the afternoon of October 13, 1990. The first few rebuilds of GP30s into GP39Ms by Morrison-Knudsen in 1988 were painted in the then-current original BN striped-nose scheme, like No. 2805.
A Utah Railway "Martin Turn" expedites a train of coal empties, departing Provo Yard through Springville, Utah the afternoon of Oct. 10, 1976. I wish I'd had a tape recorder with me that day!
A climb up a tall bluff at Trempealeau, Wisconsin, yields this view of the Mississippi River valley and Burlington Northern Santa Fe’s long causeway just east of Winona, Minnesota. On the morning of June 15, 1996, a long BN (BNSF) “Expediter” intermodal train 42 slices its way over the impressive route on the Wisconsin side of the river.
A Burlington Northern piggyback train, probably “Expeditor” No. 41, is about to pound the diamonds at East Dubuque, Illinois, on August 13, 1994. A pair of colorful EMD SD40-2s pull the train—BN No. 6808 in pinstripe whiteface colors and Soo Line No. 770. In a very model railroad-like scene is this unique track arrangement at the west end of shared trackage (Burlington/Illinois Central—later BN/CC) where the Chicago Central & Pacific main line curves away from the BN’s near the East Dubuque depot, enters a curved tunnel through a bluff, pops out of the bore and immediately crosses BN’s double-track main, and onto a bridge over the Mississippi River.
My original plan on this day was to relax at home and wait for the northbound empties to make their turn at North Bessemer. A sweeping curve at Red Hot has favorable late morning light for DPUs this time of year but requires a one and done hike into the countryside. Just about the time I was starting to think about a casual departure a “Misc run just left Greenville” text expedited the process and I was out the door 30 seconds later. A quick check of my hit list had me aiming towards Forrestville and an unusual set of staggered intermediate signals located above Route 8. Knowing they would take the siding at Carter to meet the empties allowed for everything to line up perfectly.
In retrospect, I probably had less than a 20% chance of making it to Forestville before the train but a convenient stop in Grove City to work Bennet Lumber gave me more than enough time frame up my shot.
BLE 862 looks like like hell after spending the better part of a decade getting sand blasted with ore pellets working as the remote switcher at Conneaut Harbor but still adds some welcome flare to the railroad.
Burlington Northern “Expediter” intermodal No. 41 is about to clatter across the Chicago Central diamonds at East Dubuque, Illinois, on March 10, 1991. This very unique track arrangement is at the west end of shared trackage (Burlington/Illinois Central—later BN/CC) where the CC&P main line curves away from the BN’s near the East Dubuque depot, enters a curved tunnel through a bluff, pops out of the bore and immediately crosses BN’s double-track main, and onto a bridge over the Mississippi River. A model railroad-like track arrangement and scene!
SD40-2 #6819 leads BN train #48 under the Iris Street rainbow bridge on May 31, 1995. This train was a late evening/early morning departure out of Midway in St. Paul, and could hit the C&I in Savanna sometime around dawn.
The Iris Street bridge is now long gone. But, intermodals (now Z trains) still fly across the hogbacks of the C&I in northern Illinois.
This would have been the last rainbow bridge westbound on both the C&I and the Peavine. I think the only open one left on the C&I is Columbian Road west of Oregon. They all disappeared within a 5-10 year period.

These Specs come from the CAF website. Currently this plane is in the hanger for propeller work. After some quick research I saw that the nose art is different than what you see in my photos. TBH I'm sort of partial to what they currently have on the nose. If you're ever in the DFW area drop by for a visit. One more thing, there will be an Air Show on Veterans Day this year, 2022.

Looking as good as the day it rolled out of the factory, recently repainted EMD SD70ACe 1067 knocks down the N&W CPL signals at control point PKIN in Vesuvius, VA with southbound manifest 11Z. The unit wears the 1960's era scheme of the Reading Railroad which advertises their "Bee Line Service" expedited freight initiative.
After the Ottawa section of a train from Toronto has departed Brockville, Ontario, the two FPA4’s waiting on the station track have coupled to the Montreal cars on the main. Now they are making an expedited departure.
Burlington Northern ‘Expeditor’ train 42 cruises along the Mississippi River just north (west) of Savanna, Illinois, on October 13, 1990.
C-GXNR, a Boeing 737-2S2C, on approach to runway 23 at Toronto Pearson International Airport in Mississauga, Ontario. It was arriving as RAG200 (Glencore Canada Corporation) from Montreal, Quebec. The combi supplies the Raglan nickel mine at Kattiniq, Quebec - 1,270 miles north of Toronto.
The sun set 30 minutes later, hence the glow on the white fuselage.
A review of that flight department can be read here:
It's official, MRL is soon to be another fallen flag. STB has given the green light for BNSF to take back the railroad. Count down is now beginning.

A lengthy 991 trailer train from Richmond to Willow Springs has superpower up front to expedite a rapid passage of the Tehachapi Mountains. A solid set of six Warbonnet liveried General Electric Dash 8s and 9s pass over Cliff Siding west switch on a perfect spring afternoon.
RUPO with the trio of 500's are headed for Rigby but power pains low H2o and GRA got them clear of the crossing but no further. The track material is part of a reconfiguration of CP185 to expedite operations. What a joke. RIP GTI/PAR/ST.
Burlington Northern EMD GP50 No. 3151, pulling an eastbound Expeditor intermodal train, scurries along Illinois Highway 84 beneath the bluffs of Mississippi Palisades State Park at Savanna, Illinois, on the morning of September 5, 1987.
Peak season, time to put up or shut up. Time to prove to parcel shippers that railroading is good for more than boxcars and bulk freight. Time to show that steel wheels, not a sleigh pulled with 8 reindeer, is really what puts those presents under the tree at Christmas. Z LACWSP7 02P is emblematic of peak, one of the many jewels, all starting with the hindmost letter of the alphabet, that rush expedited parcel shipments teeming with recently ordered Christmas gifts the across the Illinois plains at 70 per to or from the epicenter at Willow Springs. Santa only wishes he could move this much volume.
The second section of Chicago - Richmond UPS hotshot 199 rolls through Heman with the 521-535-114 in charge on April 16, 1994. Those intermediate signals that can be seen in the siding did a good job of expediting meets.
Burlington Northern “Expediter” train 46 flies eastbound toward Somonauk, Illinois, on the frigid winter day of February 17, 1990. Leading the train is BN GP39M No. 2800, rebuilt from CB&Q GP30 No. 973, later becoming BN No. 2250, and still looking like a GP30 in BN’s original paint scheme.
Always a pleasure to see (and hear) DC-3 N431HM and Beech 18s N184KP, N21FS, N223CM - all operated out of Grenchen by Hugo Matthys
Stuart Draft and Lipscomb are located on the NS Roanoke District. The 5800 foot siding sits at the top of a good northbound grade out to Pkin. The hotshot 202 rolls east with expedited traffic from Marion, AR, to Harrisburg, PA right after sunrise. The train is 45 miles away from the next crew change point at Shenandoah. Classic N&W era style CPL signals still protect the control points along this 135 mile district.
This is a Beech C-45 Expeditor. The C-45 was the military version of the famous Beech 18, also known as the Twin Beech. I took this shot in 1995 at McConnell Air Force Base here in Wichita. This classic and many others were on display as part of the visit of the "Save-A-Connie" Lockheed Constellation tour. Four years later in 1999 this C-45 was heavily damaged in a landing accident on a runway that was covered with patchy snow. The pilot lost control and the plane veered off the runway and plowed 400 feet through snow 8 to 12 inches deep. It eventually nosed down and continued to skid for another 25 feet. The good news is that the "Beech Baby" underwent a complete restoration and returned to flying status. Part of the rebuild even included a new version of the "nose art". The updated art is more colorful and sports more stylish lettering. I only took one shot inside this plane, but that slide is really dark and hasn't responded very well to my "rescue" efforts. I'll keep tweaking it and maybe it will come around. "Beech Baby" was built right down the road from me at the Beech Aircraft plant here in Wichita in 1943.

Burlington Northern GP20C No. 2009 leads “Expediter” piggyback train No. 42 through the Illinois countryside east of Chana on April 6, 1991. BN had eight of these EMD GP20s rebuilt with a Caterpillar engine, Nos. 2001-2009, rebuilt in 1989-90.

This landscape couldn't be more different today. CF&I's steel fabrication plant is long gone, replaced with high density apartments. The track alignment through Grant Tower was revamped in 2007 to expedite train movements through a new Quiet Zone. The Union Pacific train depot is blocked by the retail and residential buildings of the "Gateway" development.

I know, the weather is crappy and it’s “stick” season in the Midwest—so why am I out photographing trains? Hey, when you’re working full time, you can’t always wait until the weather is nice on weekends. Besides, powering the long piggyback train is venerable BN EMD GP40 No. 3000, still working hard, complete with a nice dent in the nose. Originally built for CB&Q in December 1966 as their No. 170, the locomotive will be taken out of service shortly after this photo and remanufactured into a GP40M by June 21, 1989.
Seaboard System B36-7 No. 5865 leads a speeding TOFC consist through Sanford FL on 12 March 1987. In the early 80s the Seaboard reintroduced the famous SAL passenger train name to brand an expedited perishable service using similar equipment as this express, running from the Sunshine State to the Northeast markets.
