.. Cali!

I already know what to expect pretty much, but there's always a sort of mystery in every journey even if it's one you've already made, places you've already seen. And maybe hope and curiosity for something new, something more to happen. For sure i will be a bit different this time, a bit less involved, a little distracted..

Eccomi che arrivo

.. Cali!

John Seward Johnson II was expected to work in the family business, Johnson & Johnson. And he did. Until his uncle Robert Wood Johnson II fired him in 1962.

Now without a job, the 32-year old turned his attention to painting and, later, to sculpture. With an eye for everyday people and situations Johnson was able to create astonishing art from the mundane and commonplace. Like Charles Dana Gibson or Norman Rockwell before him, the subjects for his life-like sculptures were regular people going about their ordinary lives.

One such sculpture was the life-sized bronze titled “Double Check.” Created in 1982, the artist loaned it to Merrill Lynch to be displayed in Liberty Plaza Park in the Financial District. Johnson’s businessman sits on a bench, sifting through his briefcase to make sure he has everything in preparation for a meeting.

to news in a trembling voice

full of expectant raw emotion

it stops even giants in lovestruck steps

it's thirteen lucky years of harmony weve shared

since she was just sweet sixteen

and into our own little world we're expecting bundles of joy

not to cover cracks but to add to a union of strength

first born soon to be caught in the warmth of our embraces

my loves you are the secret of my completion

my hopes and my wonder

and soon we will be family

to you and us and everything

My 365-2023: #327 of 365

This bird was not expected to survive, because it was a runt, and so tiny. It should have been banded on June 3, 2012, but wasn't. Today (five months later) We capture him. I wrote a story about his survival in a word doc. Wish I could share it with you all. It's a great story of survival.

Here's something I didn't expect, though you'd think I'd have picked it up from the name. There was water at Death Valley's Badwater Basin. I thought at first this might be remnants of the same storms that washed out so many of the valley roads, but I've since learned this little pool is here all the time. A huge aquifer underlies Death Valley and extends deep into Nevada. Residence time for water in this aquifer is enormous. This is ice age water, finally emerging at this spring after seeping into the ground as many as 15,000 years ago.

You might think a reliable source of water in this unwatered place would have been a more popular destination than it is, but this water flows through a deep layer of halite before it emerges. It's very salty, too salty for most organisms. Things do live in this water, though. This is the home of the tiny Badwater snail, which lives in only a few Mojave Desert springs. I suspect the park service built it's little half-boardwalk here in part to keep people from stomping into the water, trampling the snail into extinction.

I was expecting a Sheaffer K ballpoint refill. Instead, there's this thing, that screws into the grip section. A K doesn't fit.

A Parker-style G2 refill comes closest, but it's too narrow around the tip, and falls too far forward.

Anyone know more?

The big concrete blocks around the former Aunt Fanny's bakery in Rome remind me of the concrete barriers that were put up around national guards and post offices and stuff after Sept. 11.

“You expected to be sad in the fall.

Part of you dies each year when the leaves fell from the trees and their branches were bare against the wind and the cold, wintry light.

But you knew there would always be the spring, as you knew the river would flow again after it was frozen.

When the cold rains kept on and killed the spring, it was as though a young person had died for no reason.”

And this is why I took my little detour to the Lawndale neighborhood, though I wasn't expecting to find this fancy new building. The Google map satellite view showed an empty lot. The building was finished and opened in 2011 and called the Dr. King Legacy Apartments. The name celebrates a previous resident of this lot.

In 1966 after more than a decade of hard work building the Civil Rights Movement in the South, Dr. Martin Luther King decided to take the fight to the nation's northern urban centers. His goal in part was to illustrate the horrible housing conditions of Chicago's segregated neighborhoods, so he moved his family into a rat-infested second-floor apartment in a building located right here, at 1550 S. Hamlin. He only stayed in the apartment a few months, but that was long enough for him to see a viciousness to the segregation in this city that shocked even the man who had marched to Selma. After one particularly rough rally in August of 1966 (during which King was hit in the head by a thrown brick), King told a Chicago Tribune reporter, "I have seen many demonstrations in the South, but I have never seen anything so hostile and so hateful as I've seen here today." King's campaign eventually led to a few token gestures from mayor Richard J. Daley designed mostly to get King to leave town, and King had little choice but to take the exit. His only option would have been to let himself bog down in Chicago's intransigence, and King had an entire nation to change.

As it turned out--and as King likely would have predicted--Daley's concessions never amounted to much, and to this day some sociologists refer to Chicago as the nation's most segregated city. You can wander Lawndale and see the legacy more of Chicago's resistance to King than of King himself. This single building of affordable housing is just another gesture.

If you were expecting Matchbox to make a totally stock alternative to the Hot Wheels Honda N600 Custom then you might be surprised to hear they've gone down a similarly unorthodox route too. They've gone and replicated the 1970 off-road version which does exist in real life even if it does seem to be too small to undertake such a purpose! A much raised ride height with protective bull bars and roof mounted lights gives the game away and in all its a very cute little package.
