The daily grind of the 9-to-5 can feel like a relentless treadmill, an unending cycle of work that leaves us yearning for the fleeting moments of freedom the weekend promises. Yet, within the walls of this routine, there lies a certain kind of freedom—a chance to redefine what it means to be an artist. The philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre once said, "Man is condemned to be free; because once thrown into the world, he is responsible for everything he does." This existential freedom, the responsibility of choice, is ever-present, even in a cubicle. The weekdays may be filled with tasks and obligations, but the weekends offer a canvas, blank and waiting for creation.
Once, my life was driven by art and poetry, a fervent pursuit of creativity and expression. I dreamed in verse and saw the world through a writer's lens. But reality, with its unyielding demands, ushered me into the structured confines of a corporate world. The transition was unexpected, an unforeseen circumstance that now feels like a betrayal of my younger self. How did I end up here, trading words and art for spreadsheets and deadlines?
As I prepare for another weekend, I find myself embracing a stoic resilience and the pursuit of meaning that tradition speaks of. There is a nobility in this struggle, a quiet heroism in balancing work and passion. Each Friday, as the clock ticks towards freedom, I realize that every hour worked brings me closer to those precious moments of creativity and self-expression. Life may not be the artistic dream I once envisioned, but within the grind lies the opportunity to carve out moments of true, unadulterated freedom. It is within these moments that I reclaim my identity, not just as a worker, but as an artist, and a man determined to find meaning in every aspect of life.
The Naked Accountant spends Saturdays quietly rehearsing his new art piece. Tentatively titled "interrobang " it makes comment on the existential angst of the over-40 lawn mowing enthusiast and his relationship with non-standard punctuation. The Naked Accountant is certain to recieve government funding.

Existential panic. Sometime's it's harder to keep a grip on the rope with anything other than your white-knuckled hands.

"As irreverent as it is poignant" (Australian Arts Review), this classical cello recital plays out like a piece of performance art run by a masterly jester blurring artistry, humanity, and insanity. Featuring Suite Number One in G Major by JS Bach and personal comedic pieces crafted in Idiot classes, Karen fuses in a healthy dose of pathos tackling identity, expectations, and success through the eyes of a fool.
