Progetto Arcevia 2.0/12
In 1972, Italo Bartoletti initiated Progetto Arcevia, a vision of an existential community which simultaneously enriched the local community of Palazzo d’Arcevia (Italy) while at the same time providing a site for creatives – artists, philosophers, architects – to come together and collaborate.
40 years later, Bartoletti’s vision has been embraced by a group of young London-based designers, Unit +. In September 2012, five members of Unit + journeyed to Riserva Privata San Settimio, the very site that Bartoletti first cultivated for Progetto Arcevia, and which is still owned by his family today. Using experiential and live mapping techniques across a range of different media (conceptual documentaries, sketches, models and a fairy tale inspired comic book), Unit + explored, documented and analysed their impressions of the site.
Through their dynamic engagement with all aspects of the Riserva, they experimented with colour-coded navigation systems, a proposal for a ‘floating’ meditation room and a towering sundial. Through the support and enthusiasm of Bartoletti’s family and the Riserva, Unit + will return in Spring 2013 to initiate these projects.
Crucial to Progetto Arcevia 2.0/12 is the fact that the fundamental ideals remain the same; Unit + are committed to operating as “a thought factory and creativity lab”, a team that values collaboration and cooperation. Their work at the Riserva in 2013 represents not only a continuation of one man’s vision, but the revitalisation of concepts that are intrinsic to collaborative design.

The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated an existing mental health crisis, particularly among children and young people. The emergence of “climate anxiety,” new and ongoing international conflicts, and widespread use of technology have added to the stressors impacting our youth across the globe. A study last year estimated that one in seven children and adolescents in sub-Saharan Africa have experienced significant psychological challenges, and almost 10 percent qualify for a psychiatric diagnosis. Overdose rates among teens in the United States are on the rise. Youth are facing cultural and infrastructural challenges – from stigma in seeking help to barriers in accessing support – in finding the tools and treatment they need.
This session will explore:

Walking on foot brings you down to the very stark, naked core of existence. We travel too much in airplanes and cars. It’s an existential quality that we are losing. It’s almost like a credo of religion that we should walk.
There is, of course, something inherently romantic—if not heroic—about the extreme solitary explorer enveloped by nature. The very image of Herzog on foot recalls the iconic 19th-century paintings of Caspar David Friedrich, especially his Wanderer Above the Sea of Fog, with its lone figure staring out at the wide vista above the clouds.
'Truth itself wanders through the forests,' Herzog writes near the end. Yet here he embroiders his memories for effect: The vast swath of geography between Munich and Paris is littered with industrial towns and cities.
Once he comes out on the other end, traversing the deforested Champs-Élysées (“We were close to what they call the breath of danger”), Herzog emerges victorious.

The biographies of great men who were happy in the conventional sense are usually poor in events, in interest to the average reader who demands hunger, persecution, chains and dungeons, night and storm, hooded figures, gods and goddesses suddenly leaping up from below or above, and completely unexpected twists and turns, all poetically enshrined on the last page. Shakespeare, the greatest genius of his time and of all time, hardly has a biography, for many of the romanticized accounts of the young butcher's apprentice Shakespeare are fiction. The truth of his external life, of which we have actual knowledge, is limited to the fact that he wrote plays, was an actor and director, owned government bonds, land, and rented houses, lived in abundance, and died in the comfort of his own home. Such great men without biographies in poetry are rare. They have only recently become fashionable. The biographies of most older poets consist of accumulations of all sorts of misery. Milton's blindness, Dryden's struggle with a miserable existence, Pope's physical disfigurement, the persecutions of Defoe, Swift's eccentricity and avarice, Dante's tragic woe, the lovesickness and existential angst of Petrarch and Tasso, the neglect that broke Cervantes, Camoen's life spent in a poorhouse until his deathbed, Butler's despair, Chatterton's suicide, Schiller's monumental struggle against deprivation and a slowly killing illness—these are the romantic and poignant subjects from which, in manifold mixtures, the lives of great poets were woven. Perhaps recently the stature of individual poets has diminished, while their success and happiness have increased. We find most contemporary writers and poets, even the least prominent, living in tolerable circumstances, at least no longer so frequently in garrets on bread and water, with an empty wine bottle for a candlestick. No more sky-storming titans, and they no longer so frequently destroy the conditions of earthly existence. And the people have learned to read and enjoy reading, both rhymed and unrhymed. Hand and steam presses demand an awful lot of feedstock. In return, they provide the poets and writers with bread, so much that, without biting worries, they can even manage, in their leisure hours, to compose, complete, and submit an independent work of poetry or prose to a publisher.
These poets live and die in time without leaving a biography. We don't lament this. No one lives for the sake of their biography, but for their own sake. Almost every writer nowadays has a coat and gloves and business cards and invitations displayed on their mirror. Where, under such circumstances, should a biography come from?
Talent and success ! That is generally the biographical trait.
Content in the fates of our modern notables. Much talent, much success! That is the biography of Charles Dickens . His whole life consists of happy work with the most fortunate success, nothing but light and green meadows, without deep shadows or ravines. But such a remarkable, highly individual talent with this unparalleled success in the entire civilized world simultaneously forms such an interesting personality that the smallest details of his life appear dear and valuable to us, insofar as they contribute to the knowledge of the circumstances under which this brilliant, lasting success of such a unique, ingenious talent spread across all civilized peoples and languages. We therefore give the most faithful picture of his personality based on a photographic portrait by the famous Mayall, with whom Dickens sat shortly before his departure for Paris last autumn, and the most necessary biographical notes.
Charles Dickens was born in February 1812 in Landport, a part of Portsmouth. His father, John Dickens , had previously been a civil servant in the Navy's Pay Department and moved to London in 1816 on a pension, where he found employment suited to his talents as a newspaper reporter and later, until his death (about three years ago), as a contributor to the "Daily News." Charles Dickens was educated at a school near Rochester, in the "hop-rich, apple-rich, and pretty-girl-rich county of Kent." Here in Kent, we must seek the inspiration for his best and most meticulous descriptions of nature, customs, and people. "One always returns to one's first love."
We don't know exactly at what age Charles Dickens moved into London, the true, inexhaustible arsenal of his muse and humor, but it certainly happened after he had finished his schooling and education, as his father lived in London, at a time when the youthful buds of talent, impressions, and perceptions burst forth with lush freshness. It wasn't long before he first saw himself in print in a magazine, and his eyes grew so dim with joy and pride that he couldn't see the streets dancing around him.
The thrill of seeing himself in print was soon dampened in the office of a lawyer. However, in one of these dens of thieves of law and justice, he learned the tricks and schemes, the swindles and intrigues, the swindles and hypocrisies of the English legal system so intimately that he could describe them so often and so insistently, dedicating an entire novel ( Bleak House ) to them. His father hoped to see him become a famous lawyer , but after many a book of paper and many a piece of parchment had been ruined by documents and wills, the muse prevailed over his father's wishes and raised him to be an advocate of humanity against the law, of profound and noble humor against the humbug and hypocrisy of English life, an advocate of the poor and outcasts who have no money to buy justice, no position, no ground on which to stand and rise up. Just as Columbus discovered America, Dickens first found the antipodes of London society, upon which it had contemptuously and unconsciously trampled, as upon infusoria, whose millions of shield-like shells nevertheless form the solid ground upon which the palace can stand and the carriage can travel.
After working as a reporter for various newspapers, Dickens gained a more prominent position in 1835 at the Morning Chronicle, in whose evening edition (Evening Chronicle) the "Sketches of Boz" (his earlier literary name) first appeared gradually. They are light and not yet profound, but they showed the world for the first time the ground on which England stood and had grown great. The sketches are so cheerful, so humorous, but one can already see that the ground is a rotten swamp and the greatness built upon it is a theatrical construct. Twenty years later, in the autumn of 1855, Dickens delivered his first (and probably last) political speech at a meeting of a reform association, in which he very seriously confronted the chief comedian of the ruling classes, Lord Palmerston, with a significant prophetic warning, with this rot and stagnation of English conditions, which he had always depicted and portrayed humorously. But he soon withdrew from these "reforms," which are also very lazy, to "Little Dorrit," his latest novel, to poetry that laments the fate of humankind, the consequences of history, and rises above them with humor, but cannot restrain moral nemesis against the immoral conditions and economic practices of the ruling classes. His muse is not political; poetry is not political at all. Politics and poetry annihilate each other; poetry dies the moment it reaches out to touch this modern politics of ours. There have been political poets recently. The poisonous breath of their verses has killed them all, torn every string of their harp.
The sketches were followed by "The Pickwick Papers," originally appearing only as text to accompany Robert Seymour's famous caricatures, but after the artist's sudden death, sustaining itself on the wings of its own unique, immortal humor and spreading across the literatures of all nations. Dickens has since created many more, even more successful, more moving works, but none that we love so much. It is the most sovereign humor in its freest sovereignty, the most tremendous gaiety of the individual for its own sake, the ideal of the comic epic. "Pickwick Papers" was to Dickens what "Childe Harold" was to Byron. He awoke one morning to find himself famous, smiling as he accepted the field marshal's baton of literature that the world offered him. Twenty years have passed since then. Never has this baton been taken from him, nor does it play like a walking stick in his hand. Only Thackerey could lay claim to him in the direct field of "Society"—Thackerey, who was already a renowned contributor to the finest quarterly journals when Dickens was still nameless and unfamiliar, struggling for the daily press. And Thackerey's reputation as a general is only five years old. Since then, however, neither they themselves nor the public have argued about who is "greater." Both recognize each other as unsurpassed in their respective fields, just as Thackerey could not write a page of Dickens, nor the latter a sentence of Thackerey. And so, in general, do the readers as well, thus freeing themselves from the old, ridiculous argument about who is greater in Germany, Schiller or Goethe.
The story of Charles Dickens, from *The Pickwick Papers* to *Little Dorrit*, is nothing but a record of brilliant, almost untarnished successes. *Oliver Twist*, *Nicholas Nickelby*, *The Old Curiosity Shop*, *Martin Chuzzlewit*, *Barnaby Rudge*, *Dombey and Son*, *David Copperfield*, *Bleak House*, *Hard Times*, *The Christmas Books*, *The Household Words*—all intellectual and material success such as few other works of literature can boast. They brought him thousands and thousands more pounds, so that in his secluded palace, Russell House on Tavistock Square in the bourgeois part of the west end of London, protected by a special gate and a large front garden, he lives like a prince in outward splendor, fresh and cheerful amidst glittering evening gatherings, where every guest has his own special attentive mind behind his chair, which, incidentally, may be somewhat disturbing to the coziness and spontaneity of the occasion.
Biographical events in this uninterrupted, cheerful stream of success are limited to his travels to America and Italy, about which he did not write his best books, and to his current stay in Paris, to give "Little Dorrit" a new setting. Judging from the first issue of this new novel, in which he has very successfully captured the tropical "heat" of Marseille, the change of climate will do him a world of good. No one has studied, understood, and exploited the London air as much as Charles Dickens.
Only a few words about his private life and personal appearance. Already during the first dawn of his fame, he married Miss Catherine Hogarth, the daughter of the well-known musical critic and aesthetician George Hogarth. From this happy and blessed marriage emerged, with equally untroubled success, a long line of little Dickenses of both sexes, from the father's stature down to the tiny tyke who has to stand on tiptoe to see the table. Regarding his personality, we refer to the portrait with the mustache, a social novelty in England four or five years earlier, when bearded heroes from Continente, who was still being vilified and persecuted like a foe, would have considered it absolutely impossible. Now there are already English artists, poets, writers, and teachers in Marlborough who look like heroes from the first book of Moses. His figure is compact and well-proportioned, neither tall nor short, his gaze extremely clear, steady, and benevolent, his speech rich, rapid, and warm. He rises early and works almost exclusively in the mornings. After lunch, he rests, among other things, by walking, averaging ten English miles a day. This keeps his firm, graceful figure, which also greatly benefits him in his performances as an actor in private circles, perpetually fresh and supple, so that one notices no traces of the otherwise civilized "forties" on him.
He is not a "specifically" Englishman in his personality, but rather open, approachable, benevolent, charitable, and quite unconcerned about the wealth of resources consumed in the process. However many tears of joy and sorrow, beauty and refinement, however much horror he aroused in millions at the abysses of social misery, of moral and material neglect caused by society and the state, he allowed to sprout, blossom, and bear fruit—but he does not limit himself to these acts of charity. He also knows how to dry tears in reality, how to lift the downtrodden with a warm, firm hand, only this is not spoken of, not written about, because everyone feels that they do not belong to the Pharisees who only for the sake of newspapers and profit do not forget to do good and share their good deeds.

The project existential boner is a piece about obsession. The obsession to become a person other than the one designated by a sex category at birth, the obsession to feel at one with your body, the obsession to find your place in society. Mahalia Giotto, aka Taje, was born in 1992 in a female body and went through several phases of physical transformation, writing on skin as a child to tattoos as a young adult and eating disorders during adolescence. Taje began his transition in 2020. This identity journey lies at the heart of this piece, in a game of superimposing images to express the incessant chaotic thoughts within.
Like the spray used to write, Taje’s artistic gesture is radical and spontaneous, and risk-taking becomes a strength. The artist explores his own sexuality and fluid identity while bringing visibility to the LGBTQIA+ community.

A study last year estimated that one in seven children and adolescents in sub-Saharan Africa have experienced significant psychological challenges, and almost 10 percent qualify for a psychiatric diagnosis. Overdose rates among teens in the United States are on the rise. Youth are facing cultural and infrastructural challenges – from stigma in seeking help to barriers in accessing support – in finding the tools and treatment they need.
This session will explore:

Three Peacocks -- God on the Ground

I freak out three or four times a year. It’s so consistent that I refer to it as my Quarterly Early Midlife Existential Panic Attack (QEMEPA). I wake up one morning and think, “Where is my life going? Why am I not making more money by now? How am I going to put quadruplets through college? My work makes me happy, but is this what I’m supposed to be doing? Can I make more money and still be happy? Have my pants shrunk or is it me?” These episodes last for about a week, leading to reckless behavior. I start exploring new career opportunities with wild abandon. I listen to get-rich-quick infomercials for a full thirty seconds before changing the channel. I eat and drink too much and sleep too little. I have grandiose visions of wealth and success one minute, then see portents of poverty and despair the next. My latest QEMEPA was more resilient than most. It lasted over two weeks with no end in sight. It was so bad that I hit the Prayer Panic Button.
While I was driving to work, I begged God to do something that would make me feel better right away. Of course, I don’t think God really works that way. I believe that God does stuff on God’s time, and it’s usually not a good idea to rush him. “God,” I said. “I really don’t need much. Just—”
I saw something blocking my path. It was so out of place that it took my brain a few seconds to figure out what my eyes were seeing. In the middle of the sidewalk stood three peacocks, standing in a line across my path, about six inches apart from each other.
I slowed to a walk. They remained still as I approached, watching me in all their green and blue glory. I stepped aside and passed them on the grass. Their heads pivoted in unison me, observing me as I passed. They didn’t seem frightened or even curious. It was as if they were saying, “You see us and we see you. Satisfied?”
I started running again as a smile spread across my face. Then it turned into a chuckle. Then I was laughing so hard that I had to stop running. I felt both overjoyed and silly for forgetting something very important: God is an artist.
If you’re like me, you want direct answers from God. You want problems solved fast. Sometimes that’s what we need and God is gracious enough provide it. But I think he prefers to paint us a picture. He shows off just a little bit of his love and power to calm us down. By sending those three peacocks into my path, God gave me all the reassurance that I needed. He told me, “I’m here. I love you. That’s all you need to know.”
Nowadays, trusting God is more important than ever. A lot of scary things are happening in the world. In times like these, it’s easy to get annoyed with God. “Are you asleep at the wheel, Lord?” we want to shout. “How about a little help down here?” That’s when we have to start looking for peacocks. We have to work harder to find God’s artistry in the world and trust that he’s in charge and he has a plan. And when we don’t get our peacocks, maybe God’s waiting for us to take responsibility and work harder for change.

L’existentialisme est un courant philosophique et littéraire qui postule que l'être humain forme l'essence de sa vie par ses propres actions, en opposition à la thèse que ces dernières lui sont prédéterminées par quelconques doctrines théologiques, philosophiques ou morales. L'existentialisme considère donc chaque personne comme un être unique qui est maître non seulement de ses actes et de son destin, mais également - pour le meilleur comme pour le pire - des valeurs qu'il décide d'adopter. Walter Kaufmann décrit l'existentialisme comme « le refus d'appartenir à une quelconque école de pensée, la répudiation de l'adéquation d'une quelconque croyance, et en particulier des systèmes, et une insatisfaction de la philosophie traditionnelle considérée comme superficielle, académique et éloignée de la vie. » Bien que des auteurs tels que Søren Kierkegaard, Friedrich Nietzsche, Fiodor Dostoïevski, Franz Kafka et Léon Chestov aient largement évoqué ces thèmes dans leurs œuvres dès le XIXe siècle, l'existentialisme a pris sa forme explicite de courant philosophique au XXe siècle dans la philosophie continentale, d'abord dans les travaux de Karl Jaspers et Martin Buber dans les années 1930 en Allemagne, puis dans les travaux de Gabriel Marcel, Jean-Paul Sartre, Albert Camus, Simone de Beauvoir et Maurice Merleau-Ponty dans les années 1940 et 1950 en France, et au Canada avec Jacques Lavigne. Leurs travaux ont porté sur des thèmes tels que « la peur, l'ennui, l'aliénation, l'absurde, la liberté, l'engagement et le néant » comme éléments fondamentaux de l'existence humaine. Bien qu'il existe un certain nombre de tendances communes entre les penseurs « existentialistes », il y a de grandes différences et des désaccords majeurs entre eux (il y a notamment un fossé entre les existentialistes athées, comme Sartre et les existentialistes théistes comme Tillich ou Gabriel Marcel). Certains tels que Camus ou Heidegger ont même refusé d'être « étiquetés » comme existentialistes, Sartre également mais en créant sa propre définition et conception de l'existentialisme.
