After a weekend full of fun and relaxation, most of us trudge back into our offices to start off the week. While to some this reunion with their passion makes them elated, to others their necks and shoulders don’t feel the same way.

Replenishing lost nutrients after a workout encourages the body to optimize its ability to build muscle, strengthen its energy systems and to make a full recovery – which is a vital part of the process for getting fitter, leaner and stronger. This is especially important if you exercise for longer than an hour a day.

 

So what foods are good to eat after a vigorous exercise session? Well, no matter what your individual tastes are, make sure that your post workout meal contains plenty of protein, complex carbohydrates and vitamins – preferably from plant sources.

 

A good example would be a healthy stir-fry, sizzling with lean chunks of chicken, noodles, broccoli, red peppers and almonds. The protein is provided by the chicken, the carbohydrate comes from the noodles and the vitamins and healthy fats are supplied by the vegetables and almonds.

 

Alternatively, a protein-packed tuna sandwich (served with a side salad) will also help deliver the required nutrients to help your body to rebuild muscle, improve recovery time and replenish lost energy levels. Try mixing a can of drained tuna with a small drop of low-fat mayonnaise and red pepper flakes for a quick boost of hunger-fighting capsaicin, the chemical that’s found in chilli peppers which makes them spicy.

When it comes to running, most people think that it’s just a case of moving your arms and legs faster. However, many runners have poor techniques which results in low efficiency and potential injury risk.

 

So how do you run correctly? To start off, pay attention to how your foot lands, or strikes the ground. Landing on the soles of your feet decreases speed, causing more friction with the running surface. Instead, strike the ground on the ball of the foot.

 

The legs should also move in a fluid motion, slightly bending as your foot touches the surface. However, avoid bending the legs too much, which makes it harder to run faster. In addition, the legs shouldn't be more than one foot's length apart – overextending your stride beyond this leads to an inefficient and hazardous running technique.

 

Furthermore, try not to swing the arms too much which may distort your centre of balance, leading again to an inefficient style. The arm swing should have an economy of movement, whilst also moving forwards and backwards rather than across the body – this will not only conserve you precious energy, but will also help you to propel your body forwards.
