The best passtime when there's nothing to do.

Not a great execution. The you char kway was limp and chewy by the time it landed and even though the rice noodle wrapping seemed to be housemade, there was no great contrast in texture as there should be in a good zha leung.

Execution ground, since 1943 the police prison became the scene of executions carried out with a court judgment (the so called Sonder-behandlung). The largest group of prisoners, a total of 52 people, were shot here on May 2, 1945.

Red Death gasped in horror as he fell to the ground.

The Postcard

A postcard that was posted using a 1d. stamp on Friday the 2nd. January 1920.

Miss Bertha Hoar,

'Framber',

Connaught Road,

Fleet,

Hants.

The card features the usual execrable poem that seems to be a mandatory feature of early greetings cards.

The card was obviously once glued in an album, as most of the message on the divided back is missing, along with the publisher's name.

The legible part of the message is as follows:

"Romsey.

Dear Bertha,

Just a card to wish you

Many Happy Returns on

your birthday.

... OK. I started ... Still Not

With love ..."

An Execution Witnessed by Fellow Prisoners

So what else happened on the day that the card was sent to Bertha?

Well, on the 2nd. January 1920, at the Cook County Jail in Chicago, the Cook county sheriff Charles W. Peters carried out a "psychological experiment."

The experiment entailed having a prisoner executed in front of 200 of his fellow inmates. Prisoners were transferred to cells overlooking the jail courtyard, where a scaffold had been erected, and double-murderer Raffaelo Durrago was hanged at sunrise.

Despite objections by Illinois Governor Frank Orren Lowden, who asked the sheriff not to make a spectacle of the hanging, the sentence was carried out as planned.

Sheriff Peters said in a statement afterward that:

"Well-meaning, but misguided

reformers have destroyed the

fear of punishment by criminals,

and mere incarceration is no

longer a deterrent to repeat

offenders."

The Astronomer George Herbig

The day also marked the birth, in Wheeling, West Virginia of the American astronomer George Herbig.

George, who died at the age of 93 in Honolulu, Hawaii in 2013, is known for the discovery of Herbig–Haro objects.

What, you may well ask, is a Herbig-Haro object? Well, Herbig–Haro objects are bright patches of nebulosity associated with newborn stars.

They are formed when narrow jets of partially ionised gas ejected by stars collide with nearby clouds of gas and dust at hundreds of kilometers per second. So now you know.

Isaac Asimov

The 2nd. January 1920 also marked the birth in Petrovichi of the Russian-born American science and science fiction author Isaac Asimov. Isaac died in 1992.
