In 1942, Majdanek prisoners were shot in the Krępiec forest, which was situated several kilometres away from the camp. However, the biggest execution by shooting took place on the grounds of the camp. On 3rd November 1943 in the ditches dug near field V, 18,000 Jews were murdered. Prisoners from the Gestapo prison in the Lublin Castle were also shot in Majdanek.

The straw-covered wood protected the brick wall and prevented bullets from ricocheting.
The original wall was removed after Arthur Liebehenschel replaced Rudolf Hoess as the camp commander in November, 1943, and ordered the executions at the wall to stop. A reconstruction stands in its place.
Execution Site Poperinge
During the Great War the courtyard of Poperinge Town Hall was used as an execution site and several British soldiers faced the firing squad here. Today it is an emblematical site for reflection and remembrance. Visitors to the death cells are confronted with a video image of a soldier waiting to be shot at dawn and can read graffiti left by prisoners.
