Beneath a backdrop of encapsulating color emerging from the hillsides through the changing shades of autumn leaves, the eastbound New Tygart Flyer snakes its way through the tucked-away village of Bemis, WV, as it grinds up the 1.53% grade towards High Falls on the afternoon of September 21, 2024.

Iowa Interstate 6988 heads out of Chillicothe for the last time after finishing its excursions for the day. The crew is really pouring on the steam as it climbs up out of the Chillicothe on the former Rock Island Peoria Sub. Word on the street was the train was going to head back to Silvis to overnight for more excursion trips the next day, originating in Annawan on the former Rock Island main. But a significant delay here saw the train departing 30-45 minutes later than scheduled. And now the race was on to catch it as many places as possible before it got to Bureau Junction. The bridge in the background is BNSF's Chillicothe Sub.

Running on NS as symbol 064, Amtrak's second annual Fall Foliage excursion passes through the crossovers at CAPITOL, just a couple thousand feet east of the Harrisburg Amtrak station. This year, Amtrak ran their excursions from Philadelphia to Harrisburg and return, operating almost entirely on NS trackage that has been not seen regular passenger service in decades.
