Origins
Although there are no historical records that deal directly with the founding of Venice,[10] tradition and the available evidence have led several historians to agree that the original population of Venice consisted of refugees from Roman cities near Venice such as Padua, Aquileia, Treviso, Altino and Concordia (modern Portogruaro) and from the undefended countryside, who were fleeing successive waves of Germanic and Hun invasions.[11] Some late Roman sources reveal the existence of fishermen on the islands in the original marshy lagoons. They were referred to as incolae lacunae ("lagoon dwellers"). The traditional founding is identified with the dedication of the first church, that of San Giacomo at the islet of Rialto (Rivoalto, "High Shore"), which is said to have been at the stroke of noon on 25 March 421.[12][13]
The last and most enduring immigration into the north of the Italian peninsula was that of the Lombards in 568, leaving the Eastern Roman Empire a small strip of coast in the current Veneto, including Venice. The Roman/Byzantine territory was organized as the Exarchate of Ravenna, administered from that ancient port and overseen by a viceroy (the Exarch) appointed by the Emperor in Constantinople, but Ravenna and Venice were connected only by sea routes and with the Venetians' isolated position came increasing autonomy. New ports were built, including those at Malamocco and Torcello in the Venetian lagoon. The tribuni maiores, the earliest central standing governing committee of the islands in the Lagoon, dated from c. 568.[14]
The traditional first doge of Venice, Paolo Lucio Anafesto, was actually Exarch Paul, and his successor, Marcello Tegalliano, Paul's magister militum (General; literally, "Master of Soldiers.") In 726 the soldiers and citizens of the Exarchate rose in a rebellion over the iconoclastic controversy at the urging of Pope Gregory II. The Exarch was murdered and many officials put to flight in the chaos. At about this time, the people of the lagoon elected their own leader for the first time, although the relationship of this ascent to the uprisings is not clear. Ursus would become the first of 117 "doges" (doge is the Venetian dialect development of the Latin dux ("leader"); the corresponding word in English is duke, in standard Italian duce.) Whatever his original views, Ursus supported Emperor Leo's successful military expedition to recover Ravenna, sending both men and ships. In recognition, Venice was "granted numerous privileges and concessions" and Ursus, who had personally taken the field, was confirmed by Leo as dux[15] and given the added title of hypatus (Greek for "Consul".)[16]
In 751, the Lombard King Aistulf conquered most of the Exarchate of Ravenna, leaving Venice a lonely and increasingly autonomous Byzantine outpost. During this period, the seat of the local Byzantine governor (the "duke/dux", later "doge"), was situated in Malamocco. Settlement on the islands in the lagoon probably increased in correspondence with the Lombard conquest of other Byzantine territories as refugees sought asylum in the lagoon city. In 775/776, the episcopal seat of Olivolo (Helipolis) was created. During the reign of duke Agnello Particiaco (811–827), the ducal seat was moved from Malamocco to the highly protected Rialto, the current location of Venice. The monastery of St. Zachary and the first ducal palace and basilica of St. Mark, as well as a walled defense (civitatis murus) between Olivolo and Rialto, were subsequently built here. Winged lions, which may be seen throughout Venice, are a symbol for St. Mark.
Charlemagne sought to subdue the city to his own rule. He ordered the Pope to expel the Venetians from the Pentapolis along the Adriatic coast,[17] and Charlemagne's own son Pepin of Italy, king of the Lombards under the authority of his father, embarked on a siege of Venice itself. This, however, proved a costly failure. The siege lasted six months, with Pepin's army ravaged by the diseases of the local swamps and eventually forced to withdraw. A few months later, Pepin himself died, apparently as a result of a disease contracted there. In the aftermath, an agreement between Charlemagne and Nicephorus in 814 recognized Venice as Byzantine territory and granted the city trading rights along the Adriatic coast.
In 828, the new city's prestige was raised by the acquisition of the claimed relics of St. Mark the Evangelist from Alexandria, which were placed in the new basilica. The patriarchal seat was also moved to Rialto. As the community continued to develop and as Byzantine power waned, it led to the growth of autonomy and eventual independence.[18]

From the 9th to the 12th century, Venice developed into a city state (an Italian thalassocracy or Repubblica Marinara, the other three being Genoa, Pisa, and Amalfi). Its strategic position at the head of the Adriatic made Venetian naval and commercial power almost invulnerable. With the elimination of pirates along the Dalmatian coast, the city became a flourishing trade center between Western Europe and the rest of the world (especially the Byzantine Empire and the Islamic world).
The Republic of Venice seized a number of places on the eastern shores of the Adriatic before 1200, mostly for commercial reasons, because pirates based there were a menace to trade. The Doge already carried the titles of Duke of Dalmatia and Duke of Istria. Later mainland possessions, which extended across Lake Garda as far west as the Adda River, were known as the "Terraferma", and were acquired partly as a buffer against belligerent neighbours, partly to guarantee Alpine trade routes, and partly to ensure the supply of mainland wheat, on which the city depended. In building its maritime commercial empire, the Republic dominated the trade in salt,[19] acquired control of most of the islands in the Aegean, including Cyprus and Crete, and became a major power-broker in the Near East. By the standards of the time, Venice's stewardship of its mainland territories was relatively enlightened and the citizens of such towns as Bergamo, Brescia and Verona rallied to the defence of Venetian sovereignty when it was threatened by invaders.
Venice remained closely associated with Constantinople, being twice granted trading privileges in the Eastern Roman Empire, through the so-called Golden Bulls or 'chrysobulls' in return for aiding the Eastern Empire to resist Norman and Turkish incursions. In the first chrysobull, Venice acknowledged its homage to the Empire but not in the second, reflecting the decline of Byzantium and the rise of Venice's power.[20][21]
Venice became an imperial power following the Fourth Crusade, which, having veered off course, culminated in 1204 by capturing and sacking Constantinople and establishing the Latin Empire. As a result of this conquest, considerable Byzantine plunder was brought back to Venice. This plunder included the gilt bronze horses from the Hippodrome of Constantinople, which were originally placed above the entrance to St Mark's cathedral in Venice, although the originals have been replaced with replicas and are now stored within the basilica. Following the fall of Constantinople, the former Roman Empire was partitioned among the Latin crusaders and the Venetians. Venice subsequently carved out a sphere of influence in the Mediterranean known as the Duchy of the Archipelago, and captured Crete.[22]
The seizure of Constantinople would ultimately prove as decisive a factor in ending the Byzantine Empire as the loss of the Anatolian themes after Manzikert. Although the Byzantines recovered control of the ravaged city a half century later, the Byzantine Empire was terminally weakened, and existed as a ghost of its old self until Sultan Mehmet The Conqueror took the city in 1453.

Situated on the Adriatic Sea, Venice always traded extensively with the Byzantine Empire and the Muslim world. By the late 13th century, Venice was the most prosperous city in all of Europe. At the peak of its power and wealth, it had 36,000 sailors operating 3,300 ships, dominating Mediterranean commerce. During this time, Venice's leading families vied with each other to build the grandest palaces and support the work of the greatest and most talented artists. The city was governed by the Great Council, which was made up of members of the noble families of Venice. The Great Council appointed all public officials and elected a Senate of 200 to 300 individuals. Since this group was too large for efficient administration, a Council of Ten (also called the Ducal Council or the Signoria), controlled much of the administration of the city. One member of the great council was elected "Doge", or duke, the ceremonial head of the city, who normally held the title until his death.
The Venetian governmental structure was similar in some ways to the republican system of ancient Rome, with an elected chief executive (the Doge), a senate-like assembly of nobles, and a mass of citizens with limited political power, who originally had the power to grant or withhold their approval of each newly elected Doge. Church and various private properties were tied to military service, although there was no knight tenure within the city itself. The Cavalieri di San Marco was the only order of chivalry ever instituted in Venice, and no citizen could accept or join a foreign order without the government's consent. Venice remained a republic throughout its independent period, and politics and the military were kept separate, except when on occasion the Doge personally headed the military. War was regarded as a continuation of commerce by other means (hence, the city's early production of large numbers of mercenaries for service elsewhere, and later its reliance on foreign mercenaries when the ruling class was preoccupied with commerce).

The chief executive was the Doge, who theoretically held his elective office for life. In practice, several Doges were forced by pressure from their oligarchical peers to resign the office and retire into monastic seclusion when they were felt to have been discredited by perceived political failure.
Although the people of Venice generally remained orthodox Roman Catholics, the state of Venice was notable for its freedom from religious fanaticism and it enacted not a single execution for religious heresy during the Counter-Reformation. This apparent lack of zeal contributed to Venice's frequent conflicts with the Papacy. In this context, the writings of the Anglican Divine, William Bedell, are particularly illuminating. Venice was threatened with the interdict on a number of occasions and twice suffered its imposition. The second, most famous, occasion was in 1606, by order of Pope Paul V.
Venetian ambassadors sent home still-extant secret reports of the politics and rumours of European courts, providing fascinating information to modern historians.
The newly invented German printing press spread rapidly throughout Europe in the 15th century, and Venice was quick to adopt it. By 1482, Venice was the printing capital of the world, and the leading printer was Aldus Manutius, who invented the concept of paperback books that could be carried in a saddlebag. His Aldine Editions included translations of nearly all the known Greek manuscripts of the era.[23]
Decline

Venice's long decline started in the 15th century, when it first made an unsuccessful attempt to hold Thessalonica against the Ottomans (1423–1430). It also sent ships to help defend Constantinople against the besieging Turks (1453). After Constantinople fell to Sultan Mehmet II he declared war on Venice. The war lasted thirty years and cost Venice much of its eastern Mediterranean possessions. Next, Christopher Columbus discovered the New World. Then Portugal found a sea route to India, destroying Venice's land route monopoly. France, England and the Dutch Republic followed them. Venice's oared galleys were at a disadvantage when it came to traversing the great oceans, and therefore Venice was left behind in the race for colonies.
The Black Death devastated Venice in 1348 and once again between 1575 and 1577.[24] In three years the plague killed some 50,000 people.[25] In 1630, the plague killed a third of Venice's 150,000 citizens.[26] Venice began to lose its position as a center of international trade during the later part of the Renaissance as Portugal became Europe's principal intermediary in the trade with the East, striking at the very foundation of Venice's great wealth, while France and Spain fought for hegemony over Italy in the Italian Wars, marginalising its political influence. However, the Venetian empire was a major exporter of agricultural products and, until the mid-18th century, a significant manufacturing center.

The Republic lost independence when Napoleon Bonaparte conquered Venice on 12 May 1797 during the First Coalition. The French conqueror brought to an end the most fascinating century of its history: during the 18th century, Venice became perhaps the most elegant and refined city in Europe, greatly influencing art, architecture and literature. Napoleon was seen as something of a liberator by the city's Jewish population, although it can be argued they had lived with fewer restrictions in Venice. He removed the gates of the Ghetto and ended the restrictions on when and where Jews could live and travel in the city.
Venice became Austrian territory when Napoleon signed the Treaty of Campo Formio on 12 October 1797. The Austrians took control of the city on 18 January 1798. It was taken from Austria by the Treaty of Pressburg in 1805 and became part of Napoleon's Kingdom of Italy, but was returned to Austria following Napoleon's defeat in 1814, when it became part of the Austrian-held Kingdom of Lombardy-Venetia. In 1848–1849, a revolt briefly reestablished the Venetian Republic under Daniele Manin. In 1866, following the Third Italian War of Independence, Venice, along with the rest of the Veneto, became part of the newly created Kingdom of Italy.
During the Second World War, the historic city was largely free from attack, the only aggressive effort of note being Operation Bowler, a successful Royal Air Force precision strike on the German naval operations there in March 1945. The targets were destroyed with virtually no architectural damage done the city itself.[27] However the industrial areas in Mestre and Marghera and the railway lines to Padua, Trieste and Trento were repeatedly bombed.[28] On 29 April 1945, New Zealand troops under Freyberg reached Venice and relieved the city and the mainland, which were already in partisan hands.[29]

Foundations
The buildings of Venice are constructed on closely spaced wooden piles. Most of these piles are still intact after centuries of submersion. The foundations rest on the piles, and buildings of brick or stone sit above these footings. The piles penetrate a softer layer of sand and mud until they reach a much harder layer of compressed clay.
Submerged by water, in oxygen-poor conditions, wood does not decay as rapidly as on the surface.
Most of these piles were made from trunks of alder trees,[30] a wood noted for its water resistance.[31] The alder came from the westernmost part of today's Slovenia (resulting in the barren land of the Kras region), in two regions of Croatia, Lika and Gorski kotar (resulting in the barren slopes of Velebit) and south of Montenegro.[citation needed] Leonid Grigoriev has stated that Russian larch was imported to build some of Venice's foundations.[32] Larch is also used in the production of Venice turpentine.[33]

The city is often threatened by flood tides pushing in from the Adriatic between autumn and early spring. Six hundred years ago, Venetians protected themselves from land-based attacks by diverting all the major rivers flowing into the lagoon and thus preventing sediment from filling the area around the city. This created an ever-deeper lagoon environment.
In 1604, to defray the cost of flood relief, Venice introduced what could be considered the first example of a 'stamp tax'. When the revenue fell short of expectations in 1608, Venice introduced paper with the superscription 'AQ' and imprinted instructions, which was to be used for 'letters to officials'. At first, this was to be a temporary tax, but it remained in effect until the fall of the Republic in 1797. Shortly after the introduction of the tax, Spain produced similar paper for general taxation purposes, and the practice spread to other countries.
During the 20th century, when many artesian wells were sunk into the periphery of the lagoon to draw water for local industry, Venice began to subside. It was realised that extraction of water from the aquifer was the cause. The sinking has slowed markedly since artesian wells were banned in the 1960s. However, the city is still threatened by more frequent low-level floods (called Acqua alta, "high water") that creep to a height of several centimetres over its quays, regularly following certain tides. In many old houses, the former staircases used to unload goods are now flooded, rendering the former ground floor uninhabitable.
Some recent studies have suggested that the city is no longer sinking,[34][35] but this is not yet certain; therefore, a state of alert has not been revoked. In May 2003, the Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi inaugurated the MOSE project (Modulo Sperimentale Elettromeccanico), an experimental model for evaluating the performance of hollow floatable gates; the idea is to fix a series of 78 hollow pontoons to the sea bed across the three entrances to the lagoon. When tides are predicted to rise above 110 centimetres, the pontoons will be filled with air, causing them to float and block the incoming water from the Adriatic Sea. This engineering work is due to be completed by 2014.[36]

The historical city is divided into six areas or "sestiere" (while the whole comune (municipality) is divided into 6 boroughs of which one is composed of all 6 sestiere). These are Cannaregio, San Polo, Dorsoduro (including the Giudecca and Isola Sacca Fisola), Santa Croce, San Marco (including San Giorgio Maggiore) and Castello (including San Pietro di Castello and Sant'Elena). Each sestiere was administered by a procurator and his staff. Nowadays each sestiere is a statistic and historical area without any degree of autonomy.
These districts consist of parishes – initially seventy in 1033, but reduced under Napoleon and now numbering just thirty-eight. These parishes predate the sestieri, which were created in about 1170.
Other islands of the Venetian Lagoon do not form part of any of the sestieri, having historically enjoyed a considerable degree of autonomy.
Each sestiere has its own house numbering system. Each house has a unique number in the district, from one to several thousand, generally numbered from one corner of the area to another, but not usually in a readily understandable manner.
Climate
According to the Köppen climate classification, Venice has a Humid subtropical climate (Cfa), with cool winters and very warm summers. The 24-hour average in January is 2.5 °C (36.5 °F), and for July this figure is 22.7 °C (72.9 °F). Precipitation is spread relatively evenly throughout the year, and averages 801 millimetres (31.5 in).

Haizmann claimed that he gave two pacts to the devil, one written in ink and the other in his own blood.

Johann Christoph Haizmann (1651 to 1700) was a Bavarian-born Austrian painter who is known for his autobiographically depicted demoniacal neurosis. The so-called Haizmann case has been studied in psychology and psychiatry since the early twentieth century, especially by Sigmund Freud and Gaston Vandendriessche.

The Devil's Contract is an ancient belief that mortals can sell their soul to The Devil (or a powerful demon) in exchange for vast wealth and absolute power at the cost of being damned to spend the rest of eternity in Hell (or a similar dimension) : the belief in these Contracts allowed the infamous Witch-Trials that massacred many innocent people and has since entered popular culture as one of the most well-known Satanic tropes in media. It is perhaps one of the oldest and most recurring theme in many morality tales, theological discussions and fantasy of many genres - dating back at least as far as organized religion the idea of signing away one's eternal soul to Satan or similiar evil has become a lasting image of malice within the human mind.
The Devil's Contract can take many forms but has become most associated with a literal contract written by the infernal power in question (be it Satan, Beelzebub, Mephistopeles or otherwise) detailing the terms of the agreement and often demanding the mortal's soul after their death or (alternatively) after a set amount of time.
Once a living mortal agreed to this contract, a demonic pact was formed via many varied means, the most common in the public imagination was the willing signing of one's name on the contract - often in one's own blood.
Other ways of sealing a demonic pact could involve sacrifice (human or animal), consentual sex with the demonic spirit or recieving a mark from the Devil or a similar evil force signifying ownership (in witch-hunts it was common practice to exploit belief in the Devil's mark to accuse people with birthmarks or other skin defects of being witches and warlocks, despite it having nothing to do with the supernatural).
A deal with the devil (also called a Faustian bargain or Mephistophelian bargain) is a cultural motif in European folklore, best exemplified by the legend of Faust and the figure of Mephistopheles, as well as being elemental to many Christian traditions. According to traditional Christian belief about witchcraft, the pact is between a person and Satan or a lesser demon. The person offers their soul in exchange for diabolical favours. Those favours vary by the tale, but tend to include youth, knowledge, wealth, fame, or power.

The ARCH is a word and a structure that features prominently over the millennia……
ARCHES are used in building powerful word constructs and social control structures as well as being used extensively in ARCHitecture and civil engineering.
These power structures are always hierARCHical, often with a single entity at the top known as a monARCH.
The MASONIC control structure has certainly adopted this ARCHitecture and even pretends to be borne out of the stone mason fraternities.
In Gnosticism, ARCHons are the builders of the physical universe. Among the ARCHontics, Ophites, Sethians and in the writings of Nag Hammadi library, the ARCHons are rulers, each related to one of seven planets; they prevent souls from leaving the material realm.

Considered to be the greatest mathematician of ancient history, and one of the greatest of all time.
The Fields Medal for outstanding achievement in mathematics carries a portrait of ARCHimedes, along with a carving illustrating his proof on the sphere and the cylinder.
The inscription around the head of ARCHimedes is a quote attributed to him which reads in Latin: Transire suum pectus mundoque potiri.

The 1723 edition is well-known for its elaborate frontispiece engraved by John Pine in 1723. It features a classical arcade of John Montagu, the Second Duke of Montagu (Knight of the Garter #532), and the Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of England (1721-1723), passing the scroll of the "Constitutions" to his 1723 successor, Philip Warton, First Duke of Wharton. Both are attended by their officers. Apollo, god of the sun, charges above in his chariot, symbolizing the meridian height. Behind the gathering is a passageway framed by walls of water - evocative of the parting of the Red Sea.

The ARCH is a word and a structure that features prominently over the millennia……
ARCHES are used in building powerful word constructs and social control structures as well as being used extensively in ARCHitecture and civil engineering.
These power structures are always hierARCHical, often with a single entity at the top known as a monARCH.
The MASONIC control structure has certainly adopted this ARCHitecture and even pretends to be borne out of the stone mason fraternities.

40/365 - A Farseer is the most potent and respected form of Eldar psyker or Seer who was once a Warlock but has now become lost upon the Path of the Seer forever in the same way as the Exarchs are wed eternally to the Path of the Warrior. They are most often known for using their vast psychic powers to see the possibilities of the future to be able to manipulate events to better ensure the survival of the Eldar species in the wake of the Fall.
The church was built in 1724, during the reign of Nicolae Mavrocordat (Prince of Wallachia, 1719-1730), by archimandrite Ioanichie Stratonikeas. Within the precinct of his inn, Ioanichie built the church, and a monastery which was economically sustained with the incomes from the inn (a relatively common situation in those times). In 1726 abbot Ioanichie was elected metropolitan of Stavropole and exarch of Caria. Since then the monastery he built is named Stavropoleos, after the name of the old seat. On February 7, 1742 Ioanichie, aged 61, died and was buried in his church.
The inn and the monastery's annexes were demolished at the end of 19th century. Over time the church suffered from earthquakes, which caused the dome to fall. The dome's paintings were restored at the beginning of the 20th century.
All that remains from the original monastery is the church, alongside a building from the beginning of the 20th century which shelters a library, a conference room and a collection of old (early 18th century) icons and ecclesiastical objects, and parts of wall paintings recovered from churches demolished during the communist regime. This new building was constructed following the plans of architect Ion Mincu.
The church has been pastored since 1991 by father Iustin Marchis, the first hieromonk of the church in the last century. The community living here, besides routine worship, is engaged in renovating old books, icons and sacerdotal clothes. The choir of the church sings (neo-)Byzantine music (a single voice part, sustained by a prolonged sound called ison - approx. translation: accompaniment -, or tonic note), now a rare occurrence for churches in Romania. - Stavropoleos Monastery

Saint Nedelya Cathedral, is an Eastern Orthodox cathedral in Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria, a cathedral of the Sofia bishopric of the Bulgarian Patriarchate. The temple of Sveta Nedelya dates back to the 10th century, being a cathedral of the city from the 18th century. The sacred building has suffered destruction through the ages and has been reconstructed many times. The present building of the temple is among the landmarks of Sofia. It was designed by the famous Bulgarian architectural team Vasilyov-Tsolov. The relics of the Serbian king Stefan Uroš II Milutin are kept in the church.
The former building was demolished to make place for a larger and more imposing cathedral on 25 April 1856. The construction of the 35.5 m-long and 19 m-wide church began in the summer of the same year. The still incomplete building suffered from an earthquake in 1858, which prolonged the construction works that ultimately finished in 1863. It was officially inaugurated on 11 May 1867 in the presence of 20,000 people. A new belfry was erected to accommodate the 8 bells given to the church as a present by Russian Knyaz (Prince) Alexander Mikhailovich Dondukov-Korsakov in 1879.
The church was renovated in 1898, with new domes being added. Exarch Joseph I of Bulgaria was buried immediately outside the walls of St Nedelya in 1915. The church was razed in the bomb attack in 1925 that claimed over 150 victims. After the incident, the church was restored to its modern appearance between the summer of 1927 and the spring of 1933 (once again inaugurated on 7 April 1933). It was almost erected anew as a temple 30 m in length and 15.50 m in width and featuring a central dome that made it 31 m high. The gilt iconostasis that survived the bomb attack was returned to the church.
The mural decoration was done by a team led by Nikolay Rostovtsev between 1971 and 1973. The floor was renovated and the north colonnade was glazed between 1992 and 1994. The façade was cleaned thoroughly in 2000 and a device to automatically ring the eleven bells (the eight ones from Knyaz Dondukov-Korsakov, two made in Serbia and one cast in Bulgaria).

PALESTINE enters into the CONTRACT of the ARCH – 1964
The Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) is an organization founded in 1964 with the purpose of the "liberation of Palestine" through armed struggle. It is recognized as the "sole legitimate representative" of the Palestinian people by over 100 states with which it holds diplomatic relations and has enjoyed observer status at the United Nations since 1974.Due to its activities, including violence aimed at Israeli civilians the PLO was declared by the United States to be a terrorist organization in 1987, although a presidential waiver has permitted contact since 1988. In 1993, the PLO recognized Israel's right to exist in peace, accepted UN Security Council resolutions 242 and 338, and rejected "violence and terrorism". In response, Israel officially recognized the PLO as the representative of the Palestinian people. However, the PLO has employed violence in the years since 1993, particularly during the 2000–2005 Al-Aqsa Intifada. On 29 October 2018, the Palestinian Central Council suspended the recognition of Israel and halted security and economic coordination in all its forms with it.

Stavropoleos Monastery
Stavropoleos Monastery (Mănăstirea Stavropoleos), also known as Stavropoleos Church (Biserica Stavropoleos) during the last century when the monastery was dissolved, is an Eastern Orthodox monastery for nuns in central Bucharest, Romania. Its church is built in Brâncovenesc style. The patrons of the church are St. Archangels Michael and Gabriel. The name Stavropoleos is a Romanian rendition of a Greek word, Stauropolis, meaning "The city of the Cross". One of the monastery's constant interests is Byzantine music, expressed through its choir and the largest collection of Byzantine music books in Romania.
The church was built in 1724, during the reign of Nicolae Mavrocordat (Prince of Wallachia, 1719-1730), by archimandrite Ioanichie Stratonikeas. Within the precinct of his inn, Ioanichie built the church, and a monastery which was economically sustained with the incomes from the inn (a relatively common situation in those times). In 1726 abbot Ioanichie was elected metropolitan of Stavropole and exarch of Caria. Since then the monastery he built is named Stavropoleos, after the name of the old seat. On February 7, 1742 Ioanichie, aged 61, died and was buried in his church.
The inn and the monastery's annexes were demolished at the end of 19th century. Over time the church suffered from earthquakes, which caused the dome to fall. The dome's paintings were restored at the beginning of the 20th century.
All that remains from the original monastery is the church, alongside a building from the beginning of the 20th century which shelters a library, a conference room and a collection of old (early 18th century) icons and ecclesiastical objects, and parts of wall paintings recovered from churches demolished during the communist regime.

Greek Orthodox Church
The Greek Orthodox Church, which is officially known in Austria as Greek Oriental, exists in Vienna since the 18th Century. Due to the tolerance patent of the Emperor Joseph II the two historic churches "the Holy Trinity" and " to St. George" have been founded which are responsible for the pastoral care of Orthodox Christians in Vienna, Austria today.
Today, about 18,000 believers live in Austria, 10,000 of them in Vienna. Great personalities of public life in Vienna, such as Simon Baron Sina, Theodor von Karajan, Nikolaus Dumba, Basilio Calafati, have been members of the Greek Orthodox Church and have played an important role in the economy and in the cultural and political life of Vienna and the monarchy.
In 1963, the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople built the Greek-Oriental Metropolis of Austria, headquartered in Vienna. Today, the Metropolis of Austria is among the countries of Austria and Hungary.
Actual Metropolitan of Austria and Exarch of Hungary and Central Europe is Archbishop Arsenius (Kardamakis).
By Orthodoxengesetz (Orthodox Churches Act) of 1967, the Orthodox Church in Austria was legally recognized.
The Greek Orthodox Church in Austria is under the jurisdiction of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople.
In the spirit of the ecumenical movement, the Greek Oriental Church in Austria is making great contributions for the promotion of the dialogue between the Christian churches in the context of the by Cardinal König grounded foundation "Pro Oriente" and the World Council of Churches in Austria.

360 million years ago it looked a lot different outside. For one thing, it was a very damp, humid time over much of the earth. Don't worry, there wouldn't have been any dinosaurs to chase you around. (They came later, as did the cavemen).
But there was plenty of vegetation, of course. Large forests dominated major portions of the earth's landscape, including much of what is now Europe and North America. These forests didn't have any oak trees or elm trees, though. Oh, no. This was the “Age of the Ferns”, and I'm not talking about those little old things you buy in a flower pot to grow in your parlor, I'm here to tell you. The ferns back then, and their relatives, were major-league plants, some attaining the size of huge trees. Of course, then, just like today, the trees in forests eventually aged, died, and fell over. Over the several million years of the domination of these giant ferns and their "allies", untold tons of rotting vegetation accumulated steadily, and a major result of this was the slow development of enormous subterranean strata of coal. In fact, modern coal beds tend to be an extraordinarily rich source of the remains of ancient plants. Coal really is, literally, a fossil fuel if there ever was one.
Flash forward to now, and our Mystery Plant, which is a real oddball, with no living relatives, found widely in tropical and warm temperate regions. In the Southeast, it can be been found from North Carolina to Texas, including most of Florida. It sometimes occurs attached to palm trees, or in coastal woods, and sometimes is naturalized in garden settings, such as mulched garden beds. The plants are immediately recognizable, with slender green stems with repeatedly forked branching. There are neither leaves nor roots, although a dumpy little rhizome is produced below the soil. The upright stem, being green, is where the chlorophyll is. Spores are produced in knottly little roundish sporangia, located along the branches. Here on the campus of the University of South Carolina, it can be found growing very happily in several places, actually as something of a weed, most often on mulch, and in raised concrete planters. These plants may actually be persisting escapees from our greenhouse(s). It’s hard to say sometimes where plants come from, but this one is considered a native plant.
Our Mystery Plant is thought now to be a relic of the Age of Ferns---or perhaps it evolved much later. For a while, botanists considered it to be one of the very first land plants, and thus a living fossil. More recent considerations have shown that it is actually a derived species…that is, its predecessors were fern-like plants themselves. And, because nobody has ever found any real fossils of it anywhere (as well as a few other things), botanists have changed their position, and maintain it now as a modern species. (Darn. And I’ve still been holding out hope for a 4-foot long dragonfly near the Student Union.)

The Holy Sunday Church (Bulgarian: църква „Света Неделя“ Sveta Nedelya) is an Eastern Orthodox church in Sofia. Sveta Nedelya is a medieval church that has suffered destruction through the ages and has been reconstructed many times. The present building was designed by the famous Bulgarian architectural team Vasilyov-Tsolov.
The history of the cathedral's earliest years is to a large extent unknown. It was probably built in the 10th century and had stone foundations and an otherwise wooden construction, remaining wooden until the middle of the 19th century, unlike most other churches in the city.
Around 1460, the remains of Serbian king Stefan Milutin were carried to Bulgaria and were stored in various churches and monasteries until being transferred to St Nedelya after it became a bishop's residence in the 18th century. With some interruptions, the remains have been preserved in the church ever since and the church acquired another name, Holy King („Свети Крал“, „Sveti Kral“), in the late 19th and early 20th century.
The former building was demolished to make place for a larger and more imposing cathedral on 25 April 1856. The construction of the 35.5 m-long and 19 m-wide church began in the summer of the same year. The still incomplete building suffered from an earthquake in 1858, which prolonged the construction works that ultimately finished in 1863. It was officially inaugurated on 11 May 1867 in the presence of 20,000 people. A new belfry was erected to accommodate the 8 bells given to the church as a present by Russian Knyaz (Prince) Dondukov-Korsakov in 1879.
The church was renovated in 1898, with new domes being added. Exarch Joseph I of Bulgaria was buried immediately outside the walls of St Nedelya in 1915. The church was razed in the assault in 1925 that claimed over 150 victims. After the assault, the church was restored to its modern appearance between the summer of 1927 and the spring of 1933 (once again inaugurated on 7 April 1933). It was almost erected anew as a temple 30 m in length and 15.50 m in width and featuring a central dome that made it 31 m high.

What were Federation ARCHes?
Australia’s passage into the British ‘Commonwealth’ prompted an outbreak of ARCH building…?!
On 1 January 1901, the Commonwealth of Australia was inaugurated in Sydney and various elaborately constructed ARCHes graced the streets. In Melbourne, an ARCH declaring “Melbourne rejoices in the Commonwealth” was erected. However, with many of Victoria’s politicians and public figures in Sydney for the inauguration, Melbourne’s celebrations were largely put on hold until May that year, when the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall and York would visit to open the first Commonwealth Parliament.
In May, a number of temporary TRIumphal ARCHes were built in Melbourne, St Kilda and Ballarat; some small country towns also built their own more modest ARCHes.
The early Renaissance or Roman-Doric design bore similarities to other famous ARCHes: the Arc de Triomphe du Carrousel (1808) in Paris and the Marble ARCH (1828) in London. They in turn were inspired by Roman structures like the ARCH of Septimius Severus (203 AD) in Libya, and the ARCH of Constantine (316 AD) in Rome.
The TRIumphal ARCHes were often adorned with royal symbols, images, colours and patriotic mottoes.

Sjemus carefully climed the steps. For all he cared, the view at the top could be bloody spectacular. It still wouldn't account for all the aches it took to get there. What's worse, he couldn't complain about it. Young Mikki was there too, and he wasn't saying a word. Smug little sod.
It was yer man the Exarch of Varcösz who had sent him there. Him and dozens of others. "Go find out what's going on with Mogholay." Feck all, that's what. This place was one dusty waystation after another. Why anyone would be interested in it was beyond him. It's not like Pyros could throw troops at capturing this wasteland, and he couldn't see Mogholay moving an army through here, either.
Still, he had to have a look over this one last pass. Rumour was, the lush oases beyond were home to some of the richest agriculture on the continent. If that was true - and it was a big If, mind - maybe this place would be worth fighting for.
At least, thank the ancestors, the end of the stair was in sight.
"That's far enough, foreigner!" called a voice. Szejmus strained his eyes against the glare of the sun. A figure was standing at the top of the path.
"Are ye sure?" asked Szejmus. "We've come an awful long way."
"I know," replied the sentinel. "I watched you. You were nearly as quick up the steps as my grandmother."
"Seems a shame to miss the view from the top?" pleaded the Varköszi.
"Yes. It does."
Szejmus could swear the shadow was grinning at him through the glare. He had half a mind to swear, spit, throw rocks, drop his trousers and lay waste all over these stupid steps. But he was too tired for that malarkey.
"Could ye at least give us a drink before yous send us back down?"
"Aye. That I can do. Wait here." And the figure retreated.
"Mikki, quick now. Go have a look." And the swift little bugger was off. Szejmus sat back against the wall, grateful for the shade and the rest. His mind wandered, recalling mossy bogs and woody glades. It would be drizzling back home. You'd never think you'd miss it until you came somewhere like this, dry as a firepit and even less fun.
"Here, stranger," replied the sentinel, handing him a waterskin. "Drink, and then go."
He didn't love being treated like a dog, but he wasn't an eejit. Not about to risk anything on this stupid job. He did as he was told and trudged back down the steps. At least gravity was on his side this time.
As soon as he passed out of sight of the sentinel, he stepped off the path again. No sense rushing things.
A minute or two later, Mikki came trotting along. The sentinel must have returned to his base to stash the waterskin.
"Right," said Szejmus, pulling out his own water and offering it to Mikki. "Have a drink, and then tell us what ye saw."

Simon Bolivar (1783-1830) The "George Washington" of South America, who in 20 years of warfare ‘liberated’ from Spanish tyranny the area which is now Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Bolivia. b. in Caracas, Venezuela. He joined Freemasonry in Cadiz, Spain and received the Scottish Rite degrees in Paris and was knighted in a Commandery of Knights Templar in France in 1807. While on a diplomatic mission to London in 1810 he was active in Freemasonry in that country. He founded and served as master of Protectora de las Vertudes Lodge No. 1 in Venezuela and in 1824 founded the Lodge Order and Liberty No. 2 in Peru. The archaeological site of Sbeitla, also known as Sufetula (243 km from the capital Tunis), contains well-preserved Roman and Byzantine ruins.
During the Roman Empire, Sufetula grew into a flourishing city, which continued to exist until late antiquity, when it became the seat of a bishop (the eponymous title of the Roman Catholic Church derives from this diocese). The single layered epidermis lacks a cuticle. Root hairs appear as unicellular extensions of epidermal cells.

The vascular tissues consist of radiating arms of xylem and phloem with phloem forming strands near the periphery of the vascular cylinder. The xylem is exarch: meaning the earlier smaller protoxylem is found towards the periphery and younger larger metaxylem to the center of the stem. Phloem tissues of sieve tubes, companion cells and phloem parenchyma are also exarch. The older protophloem is found towards the periphery and metaphloem towards the center of the stem. Phloem parenchyma may become sclerenchymized in older roots. Vascular cambium is absent, preventing secondary growth of the root.
The central of the stele is occupied by large pith containing thin walled starch containing parenchyma cells that may become sclerenchymized in older roots.

Devil’s Bridge by Johann Christoph Haizmann (1651 to 1700)
From autobiographical texts, J.C.Haizmann sold his soul to the devil in 1668 at ~17 years of age.
Haizmann claimed that he gave two pacts to the devil, one written in ink and the other in his own blood.

The Devil's Contract is an ancient belief that mortals can sell their soul to The Devil (or a powerful demon) in exchange for vast wealth and absolute power at the cost of being damned to spend the rest of eternity in Hell (or a similar dimension) : the belief in these Contracts allowed the infamous Witch-Trials that massacred many innocent people and has since entered popular culture as one of the most well-known Satanic tropes in media. It is perhaps one of the oldest and most recurring theme in many morality tales, theological discussions and fantasy of many genres - dating back at least as far as organized religion the idea of signing away one's eternal soul to Satan or similiar evil has become a lasting image of malice within the human mind.
The Devil's Contract can take many forms but has become most associated with a literal contract written by the infernal power in question (be it Satan, Beelzebub, Mephistopeles or otherwise) detailing the terms of the agreement and often demanding the mortal's soul after their death or (alternatively) after a set amount of time.
Once a living mortal agreed to this contract, a demonic pact was formed via many varied means, the most common in the public imagination was the willing signing of one's name on the contract - often in one's own blood.
Other ways of sealing a demonic pact could involve sacrifice (human or animal), consentual sex with the demonic spirit or recieving a mark from the Devil or a similar evil force signifying ownership (in witch-hunts it was common practice to exploit belief in the Devil's mark to accuse people with birthmarks or other skin defects of being witches and warlocks, despite it having nothing to do with the supernatural).
A deal with the devil (also called a Faustian bargain or Mephistophelian bargain) is a cultural motif in European folklore, best exemplified by the legend of Faust and the figure of Mephistopheles, as well as being elemental to many Christian traditions. According to traditional Christian belief about witchcraft, the pact is between a person and Satan or a lesser demon. The person offers their soul in exchange for diabolical favours. The Holy Sunday Church (Bulgarian: църква „Света Неделя“ Sveta Nedelya) is an Eastern Orthodox church in Sofia. Sveta Nedelya is a medieval church that has suffered destruction through the ages and has been reconstructed many times. The present building was designed by the famous Bulgarian architectural team Vasilyov-Tsolov.
The history of the cathedral's earliest years is to a large extent unknown. It was probably built in the 10th century and had stone foundations and an otherwise wooden construction, remaining wooden until the middle of the 19th century, unlike most other churches in the city.
Around 1460, the remains of Serbian king Stefan Milutin were carried to Bulgaria and were stored in various churches and monasteries until being transferred to St Nedelya after it became a bishop's residence in the 18th century. With some interruptions, the remains have been preserved in the church ever since and the church acquired another name, Holy King („Свети Крал“, „Sveti Kral“), in the late 19th and early 20th century.
The former building was demolished to make place for a larger and more imposing cathedral on 25 April 1856. The construction of the 35.5 m-long and 19 m-wide church began in the summer of the same year. The still incomplete building suffered from an earthquake in 1858, which prolonged the construction works that ultimately finished in 1863. It was officially inaugurated on 11 May 1867 in the presence of 20,000 people. A new belfry was erected to accommodate the 8 bells given to the church as a present by Russian Knyaz (Prince) Dondukov-Korsakov in 1879.
The church was renovated in 1898, with new domes being added. Exarch Joseph I of Bulgaria was buried immediately outside the walls of St Nedelya in 1915. The church was razed in the assault in 1925 that claimed over 150 victims. After the assault, the church was restored to its modern appearance between the summer of 1927 and the spring of 1933 (once again inaugurated on 7 April 1933). It was almost erected anew as a temple 30 m in length and 15.50 m in width and featuring a central dome that made it 31 m high.

The Akkadian Empire (3rd millennium BC)
The Akkadian Empire was the first ancient empire of Mesopotamia after the long-lived civilization of Sumer. It was centered in the city of Akkad (modern day Iraq) and its surrounding region.
The Akkadian Empire reached its political peak between the 24th and 22nd centuries BC, following the conquests by its founder, Sargon of Akkad.
Akkad is sometimes regarded as the first empire in history.
ARCHaeology in the region has revealed a number of AKKADIAN STELE (stone tablets) clearly depicting the SUN, MOON, STARS and PLANETS in the form of ‘STELLAR ARCHES’.
The Akkadian Holy Trinity were ISHTAR (VENUS), SIN (MOON) and SHAMASH (SUN).

ARCHons, ARCHes and Freemasonry
The ARCH is a word and a structure that features prominently over the millennia……
ARCHES are used in building powerful word constructs and social control structures as well as being used extensively in ARCHitecture and civil engineering.
These power structures are always hierARCHical, often with a single entity at the top known as a monARCH.
The MASONIC control structure has certainly adopted this ARCHitecture and even pretends to be borne out of the stone mason fraternities.
ARCHon is a Greek word that means "RULER".
In Athens a system of three concurrent ARCHons evolved - the three office holders being known as the ‘Eponymous ARCHon’, the ‘PolemARCH’, and the ‘ARCHon Basileus’.

Throughout history, this ARCHon TRIumvirate have celebrated their governance, conquests and victories with ARCHes of TRIumph…
i) ARCHon Eponymous - Chief Magistrate
ii) PolemARCH - Head of the Armed Forces.
iii) ARCHon Basileus - King or Sovereign Ruler
The PolemARCH title is derived from the words POLEMOS (war) and ARCHon (ruler, leader) and translates as "WARLEADER" or "WARLORD".
The name indicates that the PolemARCH's original function was to command the military.
This is why armies mARCH.
In Gnosticism, ARCHons are the builders of the physical universe. Among the ARCHontics, Ophites, Sethians and in the writings of Nag Hammadi library, the ARCHons are rulers, each related to one of seven planets; they prevent souls from leaving the material realm.

'SOVEREIGN' - literally means to reign from above.
This is why the MonARCH of a country is referred to as 'Your HIGHNESS'
Then we have
MatriARCHs - a system of society or government ruled by a woman or women
PatriARCHs - a system of society or government in which the father or eldest male is head of the family and descent is reckoned through the male line.
OligARCHs - government by the few, especially despotic power exercised by a small and privileged group for corrupt or selfish purposes.

mARCHer lords - A Marcher Lord was a noble appointed by the King of England to guard the border between England and Wales. A Marcher Lord was the English equivalent of a margrave or a marquis before the introduction of the title of "marquess" in Britain
ARCHimandrite - the superior of a large monastery or group of monasteries in the Orthodox Church

TrierARCH - the title of officers who commanded a trireme in the classical Greek world. In Classical Athens, the title was associated with the trierarchy, one of the public offices or liturgies, which were filled by wealthy citizens for a year
HagiARCHy - government by saints, holy men, or men in holy orders
AutARCHic - having and exercising complete political power and control: absolute, absolutistic, arbitrary, autarchical, autocratic, autocratical, despotic, dictatorial, monocratic, totalitarian, tyrannic, tyrannical, tyrannous
HeptARCHy - a collective name applied to the seven kingdoms of Anglo-Saxon England from the Anglo-Saxon settlement of Britain in the 5th century until the 8th century consolidation into the four kingdoms of Mercia, Northumbria, Wessex and East Anglia.
TetrARCHy - term adopted to describe the system of government of the ancient Roman Empire instituted by Roman Emperor Diocletian in 293, marking the end of the Crisis of the Third Century and the recovery of the Roman Empire
TheARCHy - rule by a god or gods
GynARCHy - rule by women or a woman.
ExARCHate - a Byzantine province governed by an exARCH
AnARCHy - a state of disorder due to lack of social structure

At school we are not taught the true meaning of the ARCHway….
By passing through the ARCHway we may be unaware that we are entering into an agreement or contract where we are to be ruled over.
The ‘CONTRACT of the ARCH’ perhaps……

ARCHimedes (c. 287 – c. 212 BC)
Considered to be the greatest mathematician of ancient history, and one of the greatest of all time.
The Fields Medal for outstanding achievement in mathematics carries a portrait of ARCHimedes, along with a carving illustrating his proof on the sphere and the cylinder.
The inscription around the head of ARCHimedes is a quote attributed to him which reads in Latin: Transire suum pectus mundoque potiri.
'RISE ABOVE ONESELF AND GRASP THE WORLD’.

The 1723 edition is well-known for its elaborate frontispiece engraved by John Pine in 1723. It features a classical arcade of John Montagu, the Second Duke of Montagu (Knight of the Garter #532), and the Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of England (1721-1723), passing the scroll of the "Constitutions" to his 1723 successor, Philip Warton, First Duke of Wharton. Both are attended by their officers. Apollo, god of the sun, charges above in his chariot, symbolizing the meridian height. Behind the gathering is a passageway framed by walls of water - evocative of the parting of the Red Sea.
The 47th proposition of Euclid, the traditional symbol of a past masters of a Masonic lodge, appears in the foreground. Below it, in Greek, is ARCHhimedes' famous exclamation: “Eureka!” (“I have found it!”)

Torcello, an island at the northern end of the Venetian Lagoon, is home to the first and oldest cathedral in the Venetian lagoon, the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta. The cathedral was established in 639 according to the wishes of the Byzantine Emperor Heraclius and the Exarch of Ravenna. Torcello Cathedral embodies a significant example of Venetian Byzantine architecture – a building with a basilica design divided by Greek marble columns – with beautifully decorated capitals – in three naves: a very high central one and two smaller lateral ones.
Torcello Cathedral contains a series of elaborate Byzantine wall mosaics dating to the 11th century. These include the Virgin and Child, located in the apse, and the Last Judgment, on the entrance wall. The Last Judgement mosaic is an elaborate depiction of the regurgitation and reassemblage of the blessed at Christ’s Second Coming, and conversely, the division and dismemberment of the damned in Hell. Such representations employ horizontal panels that depict Christ at the top presiding over the Last Judgment, accompanied by elders, apostles, and archangels. Beneath, angels sound trumpets causing animals beneath, on land, and fishes in the sea to regurgitate pieces of human bodies they had consumed: hands, feet, torsos, and heads. The blessed are shown at the left, being led to Christ’s throne, while the damned are herded into Hell, first by angels and next by tormenting demons. In Hell, those condemned are tortured in flames and devoured by monsters.
