Canal Saint-Martin

The Canal Saint-Martin is a 4.5 km long canal in Paris. It connects the Canal de l'Ourcq to the river Seine and runs underground between Bastille (Paris Métro) and République (Paris Métro).

Construction of the canal was ordered by Napoleon I in 1802, in order to create an artificial waterway for supplying Paris with fresh water to support a growing population and to help avoid diseases such as dysentery and cholera.

Gaspard de Chabrol, prefect of Paris, proposed building a canal from the Ourcq River (starting 100 km northeast of Paris). The canal was dug from 1802 to 1825, funded by a new tax on wine. The canal was also used to supply Paris with food (grain), building materials, and other goods, carried on canal boats. Two ports were created in Paris on the canal to unload the boats: the Port de l'Arsenal and the Bassin de la Villette.

By the 1960s, traffic had dwindled to a trickle and the canal narrowly escaped being filled in and paved over for a highway. Today, the canal is covered for a portion of its life: from Rue du Faubourg du Temple to the Place de la Bastille.

The entrance of the canal is a double lock near the Place de Stalingrad. Then, towards the river Seine, the canal is bordered by the Quai de Valmy on one side and the Quai de Jemmapes on the other. The canal widens at Bassin de la Villette, the largest artificial lake in Paris, and finally ends at the Seine via the Port de l'Arsenal. Along the canal is an unusual hydraulic lifting bridge, the Pont levant de la rue de Crimée.

I propped a mirror up by my computer and drew this self-portrait while watching a movie. It was a very quick sketch and it is only the second that I've done from life. I'm finding that drawing from life is far easier than from photos, where I get bogged down with details. The color scheme is completely fabricated, including the stripes. And I love how they turned out! Originally I titled this sketchbook page 'unkempt me' because I hadn't showered yet and my hair was all over the place. But I didn't really capture that part well, so I cropped it off here. I look like I'm blushing! This one was far more fun than the charcoal one and took far less time!!

Everyone in my family has a "specialty", and when there is need for that specialty, that person is expected to do the job. For instance, my husband cooks the meat, I am not to be trusted. I cook the side dishes and homemade breads. I am also the painter of walls and ceilings and cabinets because I am persnickety and won't leave splotches everywhere or crooked lines. No, definitely no crooked lines. I have a half inch flat watercolor brush that I do touch ups with! Well, recently someone stepped through the attic floor/bathroom ceiling, and after it was repaired I was sent in to do the painting. I hate painting ceilings!! Seriously! Neck and shoulders...it just isn't good! Anyway, as I grumbled while applying a second coat, I heard a reciprocating saw in the next room. I came around the corner just in time to see the saw blade hit the drain pipe to the bathtub upstairs and see water come gushing down. It was not my job to clean up that mess (TG!), so I got off easy there; but, guess what I'll be doing again in the next couple of days? Yep...another ceiling. Bummer!

This is me, in my painting get up: a cheapo baseball cap to protect the hair, and an old reject t-shirt of my husband's with paint all over it. Now, this is not an attractive look for me in the least, but I'm just going to go ahead and let you know that I didn't do myself any favors here! It is micron pen (sepia) and watercolor on exacompta sketchbook. I probably should have waited until the neck and shoulders were back to normal before doing this.

I was too restless to sleep, so I cracked out the pen and paper and wrote down a line from a song I was listening to, and thought I'd draw something related to it. But I didn't.

Instead I started a mandala, but soon lost any semblance of order as the lines started to escape the original pattern. Following life, I now realize.

One of the three daily notebooks I've kept religiously during 2013 has been a fitness notebook. Recorded therein are dietary efforts (or lack thereof) as well as gym visits (or lack thereof) and what was accomplished (or not) during each workout session. And what use would all these data be without analysis? Attached to this page is a graph in which are plotted (to date) weekly weekly weight and number of gym visits for that week. The notebook used for this endeavor is an Exacompta Space 24 which I've found to be quite suitable for this endeavor.

I have used various blank books as journals for the past ten years - most recently moleskines, though for my next one I'll be trying an Exacompta sketch book. There's always the problem that they're hard to differentiate when you're done with them. I had some torn strips of very nice, heavy Rives BFK paper leftover from my letterpress project, so I made them into covers and lettered my own titles onto each one.

All it involved was some pretty straightforward folding; the covers hold themselves in place pretty well and you can write on the spines as well as on the front and back.

The titles were originally given as each journal was completed, not made up just for this project ;) I usually wait until the journal is nearly finished before titling it.
