Guiyu is one of the biggest e-waste centers of the world. More than a million ton of e-waste is dismantled in this Chinese village every year. Women, children and man work under terrible conditions to extract all the precious metals from circuit boards, computers, ic's and other electronics.

They often burn the plastics, circuit boards and ic's in open air without protection in order to extract the melted copper or tin. Despite the ratification of the Basel-agreement, a lot of international branded gadgets end up illegally in Guiyu.

This man assembles plastic waste form waste-dumps to try to resell it.

I nostri compagni di Mac che abbiamo conosciuto ieri sera devono andare via. Ora o mai più: "vi piace la campagna Green My Apple?". La risposta tanto temuta è affermativa: "Perché no? Male di sicuro non può fare e se i Mac diventeranno anche più ecologici, tanto meglio! Certo che è una cosa difficilissima da ottenere..."

La storia continua sul nostro iDiary.

Closed, shuttered and gone. It looks like someone tried setting up an e-recycling center here - or used it as a dumping ground. Device from the day of manual credit card machines.

A closer look at circuit boards. You can see the complex fusion of valuable metals and plastics that must be separated before remanufacturing any of the materials into new products.

The unfortunate reality of my neighbourhood's preferred electronic waste disposal solution. To the DPW's credit, they do clear it out within 24 hours.

An abandoned Kmart in the Miller area of Gary, IN. Later it obviously became a recycling center for e-waste. However, this looks short lived - the place looks more like an illegal dump site.

There are piles and piles of printer and computer cases (inside and out), pallets of spent toner cartridges, plus boxes price scanners, AED devices, keyboards - you name it.

We set up shop at The Effra Social Club in Brixton, with lots of you eagerly waiting to repair and restore your electrical gear.

I hope we could help :)

Stakeholders in the e-waste management ecosystem have come together to discuss the implementation of Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) guidelines and regulations for e-waste management in Rwanda. The hybrid workshop was held in Kigali and online and brought together representatives from public and private entities working to advance proper e-waste handling in Rwanda.

Extended producer responsibility (EPR) is an internationally accepted policy mechanism applied in e-waste management programmes under which producers are given a significant financial and/or physical responsibility for the disposal of post-consumer products.

This photo shows e-waste at a metal scrap yard in Richmond, Indiana.

In the foreground you can see VCRs and DVD players setting in the mud.

Electronics need special handling to avoid toxins leaching into our water supply. Electronics don't belong at a metal scrap yard-- please take them to a certified e-waste processor instead. Depending on where you live, this may be be a legal requirement in addition to a moral duty.

Less than a year ago I helped to start a hardware re-use and recycling program through my church. Although we only tried to market it to the service to the 50 person congregation, there was clearly an interest in the program, and word got out, and our hardware room quickly began to fill up with donated e-waste.

Today was the annual computer recycling drive at Earlham College, and I had this whole truckload of stuff to recycle, which doesn't include some of the better equipment we decided to keep for re-use.

Will this felt successful, next year I hope we will able to find ways to re-use even more, which is lower impact than than recycling. I'd also like make the service available to more people, perhaps following the model of Free Geek.

If you are around Richmond, Indiana and are interested to help with this, please get in touch. Thanks go to Jonathan Ulrich for leadership of the project lately, Les Williams for loaning the truck, and the Richmond Church of the Brethren for hosting the project. Recycle Force from Indianapolis provided the recycling service.
