U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Los Angeles District and stakeholder Flood Control District of Maricopa County completed Adobe Dam in 1982 to protect local communities from storm flows along Skunk Creek, in northwest metro.
Because of the Hedgpeth Hills petroglyphs, the project incorporated guidelines from the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966. The Act states in part, "the historical and cultural foundations of the Nation should be preserved as a living part of our community life and development in order to give a sense of orientation to the American people."
"We had archeologists on-site supervising the care of the petroglyphs," said Mike Ternak, the Corps embankment engineer in 1982. "Each boulder was wrapped and carefully moved, ultimately to a warehouse, during construction of the dam."
According to an Arizona State University School of Human Evolution and Social Change brochure, only boulders from where the dam intersected with the hills were moved. The remainder of artifacts at the Deer Valley Petroglyph Preserve are in their original location along the preserve's trail. DVPP is operated by the ASU Center for Archaeology and Society.
In addition to the dam, the Arizona Canal Diversion Channel was built to intercept flood flows from the north and move them to New River and ultimately the Agua Fria River. Before ACDC, flood flows from irrigation channels built in the 1880's would overtop causing severe flooding in the city of Phoenix.
"When we built the dam there was virtually no development downstream or upstream of the dam," said Ternak. "Today the area downstream of the dam is highly urbanized."
Corps records indicate that the June 22, 1972 flood is the largest pre-ACDC flood for which a detailed record of damages is available. The 1972 flood caused roughly $11 million in damages, $61 million in today's dollars.
Ternak adds, "Adobe Dam is a perfect representation of how a flood control project can allow for low flood risk development and provide recreational opportunities. The area upstream of the dam is a wonderful recreation area that includes a model airplane airfield, a kart racing track, a paintball complex, a golf course, ball fields, and a water park."

The mountains in this scene are real, but the critters ain't.
Supposedly the world's biggest dinosaurs...but, as I found out, they aren't real! What's real is that they are a pretense to present creationist, anti-evolution theories about life on Earth.

Evolution - Let there be Light. Dance into the Future en daarna Evolution - Let there be Light. Thx. Radio 538 voor de uitstekende organisatie. Hopelijk krijgt dit initiatief een vervolg volgend jaar.

I set out to produce fine art about this subject. I'm never without a camera to shoot so I am constantly shooting and sometimes the pictures are left in my memory and other times they develop into more in-depth ideas and detailed images.
At school, the only class I really paid any attention in was photography. I start to take pictures of ABAC since the first day I entered this university. This is such a wonderful garden for students, the most beautiful campus I have ever been. I know many interesting spot in ABAC to take nice photos, but I'm bored to do that kind pictures.
For this project, I didn't set out to take the most beautiful picture of our University. People already know how nice our campus is. This time, I want to show you the feeling, that how great ABAC is, which is not actually can see through your eyes. I hadn't intended to put any special subject in my works to show you the power of this University, such as prizes, honors. You could feel the power from the pictures themselves.
This work tends to focus on the atmosphere, the evolution of ABAC and its material wealth, the development of bigger and bigger campus. Time keeps passing by, Assumption keeps growing up. I've never liked to explain a certain piece of work - if you've made a picture and that's how you wanted it to be - hopefully it can speak for itself and whatever it says to the viewer - it's the right message because there isn't a wrong and a right message. Each person takes something a little different from the same picture and I'm happy with that.
Though I work quite deliberately, consciously employing both traditional and innovative techniques, my unconscious is the undisputed project manager. All my pictures for this subject is about the time keeps passing. And since I've always been a fan of long exposure, I know exactly what will I get by using a extremely small f-stop. Clouds are flowing, trees are wagging, nothing is still except those giant buildings. Got influences from the great American photographer Ansel Adams, who likely to use the smallest f-stop to shoot landscapes to make everything clear in his photographs. Besides, as I don't really have an F/64 lens, which masters does, I used the infrared filter instead. It works very well and create a much dramatically sky.
