Co-Evolution
Danish/Chinese collaboration on sustainable urban development in China (Abstract taken from Biennale catalogue)
Within the next 20 years, some 400 millions Chinese are expected to join the urbanisation race, and China's government has set itself the goal of creating appreciably better living conditions for its entire population of 1.3 billion people.
But what happens if a country the size of China initiates a development process aimed at giving 1.3 billion people access to modern living conditions like housing with its own bathroom and toilet, heating in winter and air-conditioning in summer, electric lighting, transport facilities and so on?
If traditional urban development models and production methods continue being used in China, the result could be global environmental and resource problems of unpredictable dimensions.
