When the students get back to the University Center they can fill out evaluations about their volunteering experience. They are also given flyers to remember the upcoming service dates. They can pass them out to their peers and professors also.

I did have official office hours, alliteration and all. After a security upgrade from the IT people the online notes on my server became 100% safe by virtue of being inaccessible. But, boy, did they hate Lehmann and Winer's book.

Was reading www.jackcheng.com/maxing-out-your-triangle and decided to try to evaluate my current projects against it, so I split the dimensions into a five-point scale to try and rank things more objectively.

EVALUATION

Concept

Inspired by the influence of women who conform to pressures of not eating, I choose to make an animation about a woman who is a “doll” or has doll-like qualities. She is hungry, and as a consequence is tired. She is trying to open a door, to reach food.

I initially started off my character design with a lot of complex situations and settings, but the throughout the whole process, the basics of the design has come forward, and my setting is a simple doll-house, with bright colours. The colours used in the setting are pinks, reds and cream.

Modelling

My character is a waif-like figure with a large head. Although her design was relatively simple to make, as she was symmetrical, the modelling process took a long time. The arms and the legs were created first and are extruded from cylinders at every few steps.

My character was wearing solid polygonal clothes, it took a long time to model and attach to the main limbs. The shape of the clothes was also unique, and hard to shape. This added to the time to create the final model.

The head of the character took the longest time to develop, as it involved editing a sphere into the correct shape, without losing the bulbous spherical shape. After the face was finished, I created another sphere, with an extruded cylinder to make the bottom curl. The hair was edited to fit the shape of the face, and then the vertices were attached to the face.

The final model hasn’t been smoothed, only the vertices were averaged to make the form smoother.

Rigging and Skinning

After the model topology had been cleaned, I added joints, and IK handles. This part was tricky to get correct as it involved getting axis rotation and attachment correct, otherwise the whole model would be useful. I attempted to rig a few times, and finally managed to get the rig working well enough for it to be suitable for animation.

After rigging, I used the Paint Weights Tool to remove influence from areas that were not relevant to movement. This part was relatively straightforward and allowed my character to move without deforming or stretching the model. There is still some deformation if the character moves incorrectly, but that’s not noticeable with correct animation.

Animation

I started my animation later than I expected, but managed to set up my scene correctly with correct texture and scale. I imported my character and had to edit nodes in Hypershade before the scen was ready for use.

The animation I created was made in five parts, which is shown in the different angles in the final animation video. This was to prevent the entire animation from being made on one file, so that if one part didn’t work correctly, I wouldn’t have to re-edit an entire sequence of key frames.

My final animation is an AVI animation video, and is 16 seconds long. It shows my character holding her stomach, jerking in surprise as it grumbles loudly. The character walks towards the kitchen area where the attempt to open the door by first attempting to turn the door knob, then tugging on the door twice. Finally, the character kicks the door, and it opens inwards.

My animation follows the outline of the storyboard that I originally designed but doesn’t stick to the time limit that was planned. This is because in the original storyboard, I accounted for pauses that the character would make whilst “thinking”, or being accountable for tiredness. However, these pauses, and some angles of the setting which were to add atmosphere, were cut out of the final edit because they appeared to make the animation slower than it was, and the emphasis was lost from the action of the character.

Overall

I think overall my animation relates well to what I originally planned. I am happy with the character design, setting and animation as they are now.

If I could start this project again, I would some improvements that could have made whilst I was working on the character, setting or animation. Whilst the rig is serviceable it could have been more complex and have more dedicated controls to help improve animation more and ease the walking of the character in particular. The timing of the animation is also slightly slow, which might be a rendering issue when uploaded onto YouTube or other video upload site, because the original avi file runs at the correct speed.
