Isn't that what is said when someone has a good idea?! Anyway, some sort of small LED lightbulb I found in our garage. Not the most exciting subject but up close the intricacies inside of a light bulb are quite interesting to look at. I still don't understand how they work. HMM!

One of the tallest dune in North America rises above the lakebed in Death Valley.

The Eureka Dunes lie in the remote Eureka Valley, an enclosed basin at 3000 foot elevation located northwest of Death Valley. The dunes cover an area only 3 miles long and 1 mile wide, yet they are the tallest sand dunes in California, possibly the tallest in all of North America. They rise suddenly more than 680 feet above the dry lakebed at their western base.

Thanks for taking the time to take a look at my photos, and as always, your views, comments, faves, and support are greatly appreciated!!

The Eureka Dunes are located in the Eureka Valley in Death Valley National Park, CA. Although covering an area of only 3 square miles, the dunes rise approximately 680 feet above the surrounding valley floor, making them one of the highest dune fields in North America.

This photo is in stark contrast to the last one I posted. It is winter here now - but in 5 short months this is what it will look like in my corner of Alaska.

Eureka is the largest coastal city between San Francisco and Portland. or nearly 300 years after 1579, European exploration of the coast of what would become northern California repeatedly missed definitively locating Humboldt Bay due to a combination of geographic features and weather conditions which concealed the narrow bay entrance from view. Despite a well-documented 1806 sighting by Russian explorers, the bay was not definitively known by Europeans until an 1849 overland exploration provided a reliable accounting of the exact location of what is the second largest bay in California.

At least they weren't on my head.

As we were driving out of Eureka, we stopped to take in this view of the valley looking back towards Silverton. You can see one of the old homes at the mine in the bottom right-hand corner of the picture. We continued on the drive up to Cinnamon Pass on the Alpine Loop Trail. The trail has amazing views like this one all along the roadway. We didn't need the four-wheel drive too much, mostly on the downhill side of the trip. I'm hoping to get back up there again soon.

Eureka, Nevada was established around 1870 as the result of a silver mining boom and grew rapidly after 1875 when the railroad was completed. There were large Italian, Basque, Cornish and Chinese immigrant communities keeping 50 mines running. In addition to silver, the mines produced gold, lead and zinc for 17 smelters producing up to 700 tons per day. Today Eureka County has fewer mining operations, and ranching and farming are an important part of the economy.

I have been wanting to visit the Eureka Dunes for a very long time, I finally made it. It was extremely windy. Ribbons of sand were blowing off the peaks of the dunes and much of the western edge of the valley was trapped in a dust storm. Moonlight softly illuminates the dunes.

Deep within the Raven Cliffs Wilderness in North Georgia are a couple of waterfalls that I found to be absolutely stunning. The first I'm sharing today is the lovely Eureka Falls. It was a full hour and a half hike in the fog & rain from the time I parked my car to the moment that I arrived here, with many bushwhacking & creek walking challenges along the way, but it was definitely worth it. Eureka is tucked into a little alcove, and the overall area in which to capture her is very limited. The waterfall is even more impressive in person as due to the height of its rock walls it's a little difficult to ascertain in photos how many levels there actually are.

Another thing I have begun to notice & appreciate more & more at each waterfall are the beautiful rock formations and patterns both on the waterfalls themselves and at their bases. Eureka's contrasting dark & orange colors were certainly no exception. So much to appreciate!

Tallest building of Melbourne.

The crowds on Saturday were so bad and the dunes were so tracked up, we left shortly after arriving.

Eureka comes from an Ancient Greek word that means “I found (it)”. That is exactly what I said when going for an evening stroll on a horse ranch in Kamloops. We had accommodations at the ranch for one night on our return journey home again. One of the birds that I was hoping to see and get a picture of on our trip west was the Yellow Headed Blackbird. I struggled to find him anywhere until we were at this place. There were a few of them flying around and building a nest! That meant they would hang around and with patience I could capture a decent image. When the male perched on this pristine white fence, his bold colors contrasted perfectly. Another lifer for me!

So, to get to this remote area, you have to survive 10 or 15 miles of a washboard dirt road. I've done it several times, but the last time I swore I'd never do it again. That sucker is rough - not deep ruts, just rattling vibrating unending washboard. Nice to see sand dunes untouched by human feet though. This is actually the back side, so to speak, from the washboard approach road, so remote x 2.

I'm not sure exactly which beach this is.

I think it's Clam Beach from looking at Google Maps. We were on our way up to Trinidad and I just had to get out of the car and photograph the sky, which was quite dramatic.

I hope that we can get here in a couple of weeks. So many roads in Death Valley are impacted by recent storms.
