Nach der Verabschiedung des 40/100 Gigabit Ethernet Standards im vergangenen Jahr bietet die tde – trans data elektronik GmbH, führender Hersteller, Distributor und Systemanbieter von Netzwerktechnik und Vorreiter auf dem Gebiet der LWL-Mehrfasertechnologie, im Rahmen des modularen tML® - tde Modular Link Verkabelungssystems eine zukunftsweisende Produktpalette qualitativ hochwertiger 40/100 GbE konformer Netzwerkkomponenten „Made in Germany“.

 

So genannte Next Generation Networks - 40/100 Gigabit Ethernet Netzwerke mit maximalen Datenübertragungsraten von 40, respektive 100 GB pro Sekunde - müssen laut Norm durch den Einsatz hochqualitativer OM 3 und OM 4 Glasfaserkabel und MPO-basierter, paralleloptischer Transceiver in Kombination mit ebenso hochwertiger MPO/MTP®-faser umgesetzt werden.

 

Für die Übertragung von 40 GbE wird ein 12 Faser MPO/MTP® Stecker eingesetzt. Die jeweils vier äußeren Fasern dienen zum Senden und Empfangen der Signale, während die restlichen mittleren Kanäle „brach“ liegen. Die Übertragung von 100 GbE hingegen benötigt jeweils 10 Fasern zum Senden und Empfangen. Dies wird entweder über die 10 mittleren Kanäle von zwei 12 Faser MPOs/MTPs® realisiert, oder es wird ein 24 Faser MPO/MTP®Stecker verwendet.

40/100 GbE-konforme Komponenten

 

tML® bietet Komponenten für 40/100 GbE und Glasfasern in den Klassen OM 3 und OM 4 in einem vorkonfektionierten Plug & Play Verkabelungssystem für minimalen Installationsaufwand vor Ort. Alle Module und Komponenten sind innerhalb des tML®-Systems abwärtskompatibel und verschaffen einen deutlichen Zugewinn an Reichweite. Außerdem ist durch das Konzept der einheitlichen tML®-Systemplattform eine spätere Migration zu künftigen Übertragungsraten von 40/100 Gigabit-Ethernet sehr einfach durchführbar. Durch ausgefeilte Fertigungsmethoden erzielt die tde sehr niedrige Steckerdämpfungen von maximal 0,25 dB bei den heutigen Standard-Steckverbindern. Selbst der technisch sehr anspruchsvolle MPO/MTP® Stecker wird mit einer typischen Dämpfung von maximal 0,17 bis 0,35 dB gefertigt. Damit erfüllt tde nicht nur das für 40/100Gb reduzierte Dämpfungsbudget von maximal 1,9 dB, es bleiben sogar noch Reserven für umfangreichere Installationsvorhaben erhalten. Generell werden biegeoptimierte Fasern verwendet, die äußerst geringe Biegeradien bei der Installation erlauben

  

Das tML® – tde Modular Link System

 

tML® ist ein patentiertes modular aufgebautes Verkabelungssystem, das aus den drei Kernkomponenten Modul, Trunkkabel und Modulträger besteht. Es handelt sich dabei um zu 100 Prozent in Deutschland gefertigte, vorkonfektionierte und getestete Systemkomponenten, die vor Ort - insbesondere in Rechenzentren - eine Plug & Play-Installation innerhalb kürzester Zeit ermöglichen. Es gibt LWL und TP Module, die zusammen in einem Modulträger mit sehr hoher Portdichte gemischt eingesetzt werden können. Das Herz des Systems sind die rückseitigen MPO und Telco Steckverbinder, über die mindestens 6 Ports mit 1/10 GbE Performance auf einmal verbunden werden können. Bei 40/100 GbE werden lediglich die Module durch Teilfrontplatten mit MPO-Adaptern ersetzt. So werden mit 48 MPO-Steckern bis zu 1.152 Fasern auf einer Höheneinheit realisiert.

A former hairdressers on Arachovis Street forms the context for an installation of “smart” lights programmed according to statutory international working hours. Operating at fixed hours, they take into account the limits to weekly working hours, periods of rest and holiday. James Bridle employs the increasingly widespread technology of the “internet of things” to make visible the EU Working Time Directive (2003/88/EC) which was created to protect workers’ rights. When activated, the light bulbs shine continuously during working hours, go dim and change colour during overtime and non-working hours. In addition, the lights change periodically to visualise the different actual working hours around the globe.

 

Cheaper by the Dozen continues James Bridle’s interest in algorithmic law, the processes of automation, and the political implications of the "internet of things". By addressing the guidelines to working hours in the context of a deactivated hairdressers shop, the artist draws upon the sensitivities and prejudices inherent to national working rhythms and the gross domestic product. More specifically, Bridle took inspiration from Frank and Lillian Gilbreth, pioneers of scientific management and the study of time and motion, who measured and assessed workers’ productivity through the technique of light painting. Their theoretical heritage was fundamental to the deployment of labour practices in the 20th century, just as the implementation of often opaque political intent in software is fundamental to those of the 21st century. By inserting other social values into the software layer of contemporary labour practices, the work seeks to challenge the logic of technodeterminism and alienation deployed by late capitalism.

My library has a few of these study carrels. Patrons often use them for working on laptops, but they complained that the power plugs and ethernet jacks were difficult to reach (easy for the one next to them, but hard for the person sitting opposite). So, we added outlets to them (two styles). Read more on my weblog.

Antique Ethernet solutions ...

The ethernet connector (RJ-45) had been ripped off the PCB, but no other damage had been done. So, I glued the connector back on with Araldite epoxy, and wired the connections to the ethernet isolation transformer with 0.25mm wire-wrap wire. It's 100Mb ethernet, so only four connections are required.

The bug is still there.. but it only happens occasionally.. This might hopefully be fixed in a future version of the Ethernet Library for Arduino.
