A ZX Spectrum+ with an ethernet adaptor connected.

This is a picture of the rear of the server in my living room. It is the Router / Firewall / File Server / VPN Server / Web Server / Music Server / Etc. for my home network. Utilizing a mini-itx motherboard with a daughterboard capability, it runs cool, is energy efficient, and is pretty darn powerful. I purchased the case, motherboard, CPU, power supply, and 3x gigabit ethernet daughterboard from mitxpc.com (http://mitxpc.com/proddetail.asp?prod=EKJA330M3388).

I slapped a 80gb hard drive in, installed ClearOS 5.1 and have been loving it ever since.

Specs:

Intel Atom 330 1.6ghz Dual Core CPU

Intel GMA 950 Graphics Core

2GB RAM

80GB Hard Drive

4x Gigabit Ethernet (1 on-board, 3 on daughterboard expansion card)

150W Power Supply

Total price including the hard drive: Roughly $300

Featuring the same Artix™-7 field programmable gate array (FPGA) from Xilinx®, the Nexys 4 DDR is a ready-to-use digital circuit development platform designed to bring additional industry applications into the classroom environment. Microchip announced the KSZ8061 single-chip 10BASE-T/100BASE-TX automotive- and industrial-grade Ethernet physical-layer transceiver, which is designed for data communication over low-cost Unshielded Twisted Pair (UTP) cables. It is the first of a new family based on the patented and programmable Quiet-WIRE® enhanced EMC technology, providing reduced line emissions and superior receiver immunity performance. System reliability is also enhanced with Microchip’s proven LinkMD+® advanced cable diagnostics, along with an embedded signal-quality indicator for the dynamic monitoring of link error margins. My first PCB: a breakout board for ERNI's MagJack.

I had to design my own part for this as I couldn't find a library for the jack. Once you get the hang of it, it's not that tricky. Once that and the design part were taken care of, the rest was pretty smooth. I used paper of a recruiting handout from a university to print the toner transfers. It worked out pretty well (I did have to make a few corrections – sharpie, exacto). I wasn't sure what to use for drilling, so I used a small conical shaped diamond bit with a Dremel. It too, worked out pretty well. I have to say I'm really happy of the end result and will not hesitate to do it again.

Back view of SE/30, showing PDS cards, Ethernet card connector bracket and secondary PSU driving internal 7200rpm hard drive. The topmost PDS card is a MacCon Ethernet 10base-T. The MacCon is in turn connected to a Twin Spark Adapter (made by Manabu Sakai of ARTMIX Japan). The TS adapter allows me to also attach a Daystar Turbo 040 card at the same time. Without the TS adapter, I would have to choose between an Ethernet card or an accelerator, not both.

The sensors soldered up. Used ribbon cable.

This is an Arduino Uno with an Ethernet Shield (W5100 Chip under the heat sink). I use it for a lot of different scenarios. I am still impressed about the possibilities which I can achieve with this.

Masterclock NTD26 Network Time Display Clock.

10/100BaseT ethernet connection to local or remote NTP time server, checking server every 30 minutes for updates (selectable from 1 sec to 24 hours). Uses 2 user designated public or private NTP time servers.

2.3" digits. Display is adjustable from dim to very bright using the software -- currently at <35% brightness. Can be read easily at 100'.

Software "discovers" network clock, controls all aspects of setting clock (selecting time servers etc)... using WinDiscovery. Password protected. Once clock is pointed to servers via IP address, PC is no longer required. Becomes a standalone "appliance" on the network.

Can be set for 12 or 24 hour time - in 12 hour mode (above) it provides a PM indicator in the right bottom corner. UTC or user's time zone set using their software.
