"Acrocorinth (Greek: Ακροκόρινθος), 'Upper Corinth', the acropolis of ancient Corinth, is a monolithic rock overseeing the ancient city of Corinth, Greece. 'It is the most impressive of the acropoleis of mainland Greece,' in the estimation of George Forrest. Acrocorinth was continuously occupied from archaic times to the early 19th century. Along with Demetrias and Chalcis, the Acrocorinth during the Hellenistic period formed one of the so-called 'Fetters of Greece' – three fortresses garrisoned by the Macedonians to secure their control of the Greek city-states. Three circuit walls formed the man-made defence of the hill. The highest peak on the site was home to a temple to Aphrodite which was converted to a church, and then became a mosque. The American School's Corinth Excavations began excavations on it in 1929. Currently, Acrocorinth is one of the most important medieval castle sites of Greece.

Kyoto ou Kyōto Prononciation du titre dans sa version originale Écouter (京都市, Kyōto-shi?, littéralement « ville capitale ») est une ville japonaise de la région du Kansai, au centre de Honshū. Elle fut de 794 à 1868 la capitale impériale du Japon, sous le nom de Heian-kyō ("Capitale de la paix et de la tranquillité"). Elle est aujourd'hui la capitale de la préfecture de Kyoto ainsi que l'une des grandes villes de la zone métropolitaine Keihanshin (Osaka-Kobe-Kyoto). Sa population est de 1,47 million d'habitants (estimations 2015).
Bien que des preuves archéologiques permettent d'affirmer que les premiers hommes, présents sur les îles du Japon, il y a plus de 50 000 ans comme chasseurs-cueilleurs, furent ensuite parmi les premiers potiers du monde dès le XVe millénaire av. La nouvelle ville, Heiankyō (lit. « la capitale de la Paix ») devint le siège de la cour impériale en 794. Plus tard, la ville fut rebaptisée Kyoto (« la ville capitale »). Elle développa deux quartiers spécifiques : le quartier sud où se situait le palais impérial et la cour ; le quartier où le Shogun Yoshimitsu Ashikaga plaça en 1378 sa résidence dans le 'Hana no Gosho' (ou Muromachi-dono, Karasumaru-dono) du quartier de Muromachi. Cela donnera par ailleurs le nom de la Période Muromachi de l'histoire de l'archipel. Le shogun se fit également construire le Pavillon d'Or Kinkaku-ji dans le nord de la ville. Par la suite, la ville fut véritablement dévastée par les armées lors de la guerre d'Onin, abandonnée en grande partie par ses habitants et livrée au pillage de 1467 à 1477. En 1489, le shogun Yoshimasa Ashikaga se fit construire l'une des merveilles architecturales du Japon : le Pavillon d'Argent (Ginkaku-ji) qui voulait rivaliser avec le Pavillon d'Or construit par son grand-père Yoshimitsu Ashikaga.
L'avènement du shogunat Tokugawa en 1600 fit perdre à Kyoto son rôle de centre politique et administratif au profit d'Edo, lieu de résidence des shoguns. Toutefois, Kyoto resta la capitale impériale du Japon jusqu'au transfert de la résidence de l'Empereur à Edo en 1868, lors de la restauration de Meiji. Après qu'Edo fut rebaptisée Tokyo (signifiant « la capitale de l'Est »), Kyoto fut connue peu de temps sous le nom de Saikyō (« la capitale de l'Ouest »).

If corn and soybeans dominate the landscape in Central Illinois - there are a few more categories of land use here (by my estimation): 1. Grasslands - for feeding cattle now and mowed for feeding in winter. 2. Fallow - a surprising number of local fields are just wildflowers and grasses - great for nature and insects. 3. Trees/Watershed - there are a surprising number of small forests or trees surrounding water. 4. Other - all other crop uses - whatever they may be. Most - like say alfalfa - fall into #1 - but there are sometimes unique crop plantings. And then there's this - 5. Pumpkins.
And by pumpkins I do not mean Jack-o-Lantern pumpkins. These are pumpkins grown specifically for canning. If you've made a pumpkin pie - and used Libby's Pumpkin Pie filling - that was all canned in Morton, IL - about 30 miles west of me. And almost all the pumpkin grown for Libby is grown within 50 miles of Morton. In spite of that - you don't see a ton of pumpkin fields around here - but they are findable if you drive towards Morton. I found this in eastern Tazewell County on Sunday - about 10 miles south of Morton.
And in the end - while almost all the corn and beans grown here are destined for other uses (oils/feed/etc.) - these pumpkins are 100% for human consumption - as long as you like pie.

My main reason for taking photographs on this cold morning was to see C/2021 A1 (Leonard) aka Comet Leonard. Unfortunately even though the best viewing location at this time by my estimation using Stellarium was not blocked by clouds, I never actually saw the comet on this date. Numerous stars are visible here as well as the planet Mars, the bright dot (enhanced by me) right of center not too far above the lake horizon. Above and to the right of Mars is kappa Lib, a double star. Above and to the left of Mars is theta Lib, another double star. The bright dot on the upper right is Spica, a variable double star.
I had three opportunities to see Comet Leonard; the morning of December 10 (see my previous posts), the morning of December 11 and today. December 11 was completely overcast. However it turned out I was never able to see the comet with my naked eye or binoculars.
This image is identical to the previous post except I have added a rendition of close to where Comet Leonard should be located. It is a faint greenish fuzzy dot left of the photo center above and slightly to the right of the Harrison-Dever Water Intake Crib which is two small bright dots on the lake surface. On this morning the comet is much lower in the sky than on December 10. This image will best be viewed on a large screen device or a small screen device using the Flickr mobile app that will allow zooming independent of Flickr enlargement restrictions.
*Comet Leonard was visible in darker sky areas and when using a camera attached to a star tracking device - refer to YouTube, Alyn Wallace, "I Flew 2900km To Photograph COMET LEONARD! (Last Chance!)". The ability to get a clear image of the comet and its tail were dependent on imaging it over a greater period of time than using a fixed camera taking a single shot as I was doing.

Another session at the climbing wall as J has really taken to it, and some friends joined us today. On the way home we stopped for a drink at the pub.
I like the pub, but nearly passed out at the bill - 2 bloody Mary's, a pint of soda water and 3 x apple juice (from a carton) came to £17!! We won't be heading back there for a while!!
That said I'm now going to have a month with out alcohol (it's H's birthday in February) as I'm very keen to shift some weight and think alcohol is mostly to blame (and my lack of willpower!)
So Down for the SH - the drink went down well, the pub went down in my estimations, and hoping my weight will go down too!
