"Architextures" is a series of composite images. Each image is a mashup of multiple photographs. At least one of the sources is of an architectural subject, anything from closeup walls or windows to broad cityscapes. The added images provide texture or pattern. In some, the architectural forms are preserved and obvious. In others, the pictures become pure abstractions. Yet in all of them, the inherent geometry, angles, lines, and repetitions of the architecture are essential to the geometry and esthetics of the final image.

This series is from the high rise architecture of Charlotte, North Carolina. Image 31 is the basis for the others, but it is not itself a mashup of images. Instead, this plain photo is a mashup of city sights created by the reflective glass of a tall building. The direct view is of the Bank of America Plaza (built 1974, 503 feet tall (153 m), 40 floors), situated on the southeast corner of Trade and Tryon Streets. It is seen from across the street on the NE corner. Reflected in the glass façade is the Bank of America Corporate Center, the tallest building in the Carolinas (built 1992, 871 feet tall (266 m), 60 floors). The architectural façade, window dividers, and wavy glass of the Plaza building reflect the windows, the beige stone, and the strong vertical and horizontal lines of the Corporate building. Interior lights from the Plaza building add warm orange accents. Although this is a photograph, the natural optical combination of two strong but complementary geometries results in an image that automatically crosses into the realm of abstract art.

The other images in the series all build on image 31, using other architectural and sculptural photographs from Uptown Charlotte, all of which likewise have strong grid or tile patterns. In some, image amalgamation results in either bolder or more sedate colors. Since these are abstractions, orientation of or reference to the original real objects becomes irrelevant, and as such, the images can be turned on their sides and still be effective abstract art, as seen in images 32b & 32c. Images 33a & 33b lose their overt association with the source architecture – if one was unaware of the origin of these images, it might not be easy to infer their origins in the high rise city. These are more purely abstract, strongly suggestive of mid 20th century art, akin perhaps to a meld of abstract expressionism (e.g. Jackson Pollock, 1912-1956) with stained glass or geometric art (e.g. Piet Mondrian, 1872-1944).

What once was a little carwash on the corner of 12th and Gilmore is now a dominating presence in the 12 south District. They could see it but not many could, Jay Pennington from an operational standpoint whereas Billy Inman sees things from an esthetics point of view, working together things made sense. The design and concept evolved over the 13 months it took to take a little carwash to the multi-environment restaurant/bar/patio/beer garden that opened in April 2012. Urban Grub offers a feeling of cosiness with its private cabanas and its many fire pits as well as the open-air atmosphere in the beer garden with an in-outdoor bar. With all custom designs, there is something new and beautiful to be found around each corner.

SOUL CATCHING UP WITH THE BODY

“After a certain high level of technical skill is achieved, science and art tend to coalesce in esthetics, plasticity, and form. The greatest scientists are always artists as well.”

~ Albert Einstein ~

The Qalawun complex is a massive complex in Cairo, Egypt that includes a madrasa, a hospital and a mausoleum. It was built by the Sultan Al-Nasir Muhammad Ibn Qalawun in the 1280s; some thirty surviving mosques were built during his time.

The Qalawun Complex was built over the ruins of the Fatimid Palace of Cairo, with several halls in the Palace. It was sold to several people until it was finally bought by the Sultan Qalawun in 1283 AD. The structure resides in the heart of Cairo, in the Bayn al-Qasrayn, and has been a center for important religious ceremonies and rituals of the Islamic faith for years, stretching from the Mamluk dynasty through the Ottoman Empire.

The Mausoleum of Sultan Qalawun in Cairo is considered by many to be the second most beautiful mausoleum, succeeded only by the Taj Mahal in India.

Al-Nuwayri (an Arab Historian), has said in his book Nihayet al Irab (The Utmost Desire), that the Mausoleum was not intended to become a buriel site, but a Mosque and a school, and that it was first used as a tomb when he died, and hosted his body. His body was kept in the Cairo Citadel for two months until the tomb was ready to replace the Citadel's Burial location, later when Qalawun's son died, he too was buried in the Mausoleum. The mihrab of the mausoleum is often considered as the most lavish of its kind. This is in contrast to the mihrab of the madrasa, which is less grand in size and general esthetics. With a horse-shoe profile the mihrab is flanked by three columns made of marble. The Mausoleum later on, and under the mamluks included a Museum for Royal Cloths of those buried in it.

The Mausoleum of Qalawun is significant in that it’s dome served as a ceremonial center for the investing of new emirs. Indeed the dome was a symbol of new power, a changing of the guard, signifying a new center of Mamluk power, which enjoyed great prosperity at the time. The Mausoleum's Dome was demolished by the Ottoman Governor over Egypt Abdul-Rahman Katkhuda and was then rebuilt in Ottoman architecture, However the Comite for reservation of Arab monuments built another dome to replace that in 1908 [Wikipedia.org]

The City Lights images are a composition of strongly geometrical views of architectural subjects in Atlanta, Georgia. They have been mashed up and ganged together to create a sense of a vibrant illuminated high rise city at different times of night. Are these views of city center, the shopping district, an office district, or a red light district? Is this downtown, the tenements, uptown, or the theater and night club scene? Is it peak hours, last call, or the wee hours? Are people going out, or coming home? Is this a modern high rise city, like New York, Tokyo, Hong Kong, Singapore, or Sao Paulo? Or, is this Batman’s or Dick Tracy’s 1930’s Gotham, or Friz Lang’s Metropolis, or Frank Miller's Sin City? How do these mashups speak to you?

The images used for City Lights are the following.

esthetics - (art) the branch of philosophy dealing with beauty and taste (emphasizing the evaluative criteria that are applied to art); "traditional aesthetics assumed the existence of universal and timeless criteria of artistic value"

A transparent acrylic layer on top of the first DCT text:

The legibility of an encrypted message does not just depend on the complexity of the encryption algorithm, but also on the placement of the data of the message.

The Discreet Cosine Transform is a mathematical technique. In the case of the JPEG compression, a DCT is used to describe a finite set of patterns, called macroblocks, that could be described as the 64 character making up the JPEG image, adding lumo and chroma values as ‘intonation’.

If an image is compressed correctly, its macroblocks become ‘invisible’. The incidental trace of the macroblocks is generally ignored as artifact or error.

Keeping this in mind, I developed DCT. DCT uses the esthetics of JPEG macroblocks to mask its secret message as error. The encrypted message, hidden on the surface of the image is only legible by the ones in the know.

Who had decided which one is the border between beauty and ugly?

Is maybe esthetics an exact science?

is it a unit of measure?

Subjectivity and objectivity are decided by a straight line?

Derailed from the track of the indoctrination is an abstract concept for the popular taste.

The project Parameters is based on the clash between the beauty imposed on us by the occidental media and the human's reality.

The proportions imposed by the modern media system, product of thousand of years of ready-made images, couldn't be the only one acceptable reality, but overall couldn't represent the only one reality lived daily by the humans.

young smiling lady lying on escalator touching hand-rail

On the country-side of Madurai, just coming back from a marriage, I asked the driver to stop as I suddenly saw one of my favourite statues of Tamil Nadu, indeed this horse or kutirai inside a small temple with his blue guard as from heaven, protecting this holy place. Often you see red terracotta horses nearby villages to protect them from evil but here the horse was inside the temple. The kaaval deywam or the guard of God AYYANAR.

They were restoring the statue, freshly painted, I had to crop out all the bamboo scaffolding around it. A quick shot, taxi was waiting, I used my handy small camera.

Indeed a blaster of colors what's so typical for Tamil architecture, it takes time to adept yourself to esthetics here, but when you feel the culture here, it is only an expression of it.

You can see what's there on top of the horse ?
