Around Year 3300 of the Second Age - The establishment of Dol Amroth
As a part of the Gondorian kingdom, Dol Amroth is located on a large peninsula by the Bay of Belfalas. This area was originally inhabited by surviving elves from Beleriand, but late in the Second Age, some of the Faithful Numenoreans of Elendil's kin settled near the elves. This is where they started building the foundation for the large coastal city. Due to the location of the city, it was occasionally under attack by the corsairs of Umbar. The peninsula of Belfalas was ruled by the Prince of Dol Amroth, a bloodline descendant from the House of Elros, and linked to the Stewards of Gondor and the Kings of Rohan. The city played a major role during the Third Age, where they served as one of the defenders of the White City during the War of the Ring.

That establishment is a species of Pub, and also a little market, and also a LAN Gaming Center, and also a video-game center... And there, some kids playing video-game. :¬)
This is a very poor community (or Favela, in Portuguese) called Santa Marta, on the mount Dona Marta. For many years it was devastated by the violence caused by the organized crime, specially because of the drug traffic. I could never imagine myself entering there, but, since November 2008, its permanently occupied by the police and, since this date, the inhabitants are free of the violence. Them, I could walk all the place without problem (well, almost...), but, in general, was everything very well, even I'm being with a bit of fear...

The Tawana Motel, later known as the Holiday Shores Motel, was constructed in 1965-1966 and is an intact example of a mid-century, Populuxe-style lodging establishment in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. The motel remains in operation today as a demonstration of the growth of Myrtle Beach as a tourist destination in the middle of the twentieth century, making it a “microcosm of American society and economic prosperity for the two decades following World War II. Following the devastation of Hurricane Hazel in 1954, Myrtle Beach transitioned from a small scale, domestic tourist destination to one with an international reach. Around this same time, Myrtle Beach, and establishments like the Tawana Motel across the country, capitalized on this increase in consumption and the increased ability to travel. By the 1950's, most American families owned at least one car which they typically used when traveling for leisure, and roads created by New Deal funds brought more accessibility to Myrtle Beach. The term “automobility” arose during the 1960's and expressed the “collective beliefs and attitudes, as well as the accumulated material culture, associated with mass motoring.” Myrtle Beach’s Chamber of Commerce took advantage of this “automobility” and launched an aggressive tourism campaign. It focused on five areas to encourage Myrtle Beach’s economy to grow, the first of which was travel promotion. As a Sun-News article stated in 1965, “Roads bring tourists to Myrtle Beach and the Grand Strand. By far a majority of the visitors to the Grand Strand area come by car. The roads they travel therefore are important.”
Automobiles not only influenced the transportation routes for the tourism industry, but also the built environment. The motels, or 'motor-hotels', dotting the landscape were built with the automobile in mind: ample parking adjacent to each guestroom, a driveway leading to the lobby, and bright, eye-catching signs to lure motorists to stay at their particular motel. In an attempt to stray from the mundane of other roadside architecture, which was meant to provide a comforting sameness no matter where one might be in the nation, the Tawana Motel and other family-run motels of the era strove to give guests an air of excitement and exoticism. These motels were meant to be the destination and not just a stop along the way. They utilized Polynesian or Tiki themes to create a sense of exoticism and allow middle class families to feel as if they were traveling to distant part of the world without leaving the United States, reinforcing the combined feeling of security and excitement provided by these motels.
The architecture of the Tawana Motel also fits within the Populuxe style of the mid-twentieth century. Populuxe motels were typically small, one or two-story buildings of simple construction that also featured signs and check-in offices that combined the image of “efficient modernity with the fun of being on vacation.” As modern architecture began to thrive throughout the country, roadside businesses began utilizing principles of Modernism in their buildings, pursuing a stripped-down and efficient functionality that often translated to cheaper and quicker construction. However, these newer buildings also exuded the forward-looking, futuristic trend then sweeping the country. The architecture of these businesses emphasized simplicity of the design while utilizing bright colors and eye-catching motifs and signs to entice motorists to stop at their businesses.
The Holiday Shores Motel or the Tawana Motel is a prime example of a Populuxe-style, mid-century modern motel built during Myrtle Beach’s Golden Era. The motel epitomizes the architectural style of the time and combines the excitement needed for a vacation with the security required to feel safe in a new space. So, for its role in the growth of Myrtle Beach as a tourist destination and as a rare example of the Populux-style of architecture, this motel was added to the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) on May 13, 2019. All of the information above was found on the original documents submitted for listing consideration that can be viewed here:

The imperial city of Chemnitz was founded in the 12th century, emerging from a Benedictine monastery. Its rise as an important trading centre in the foothills of the Ore Mountains was followed by the establishment of the city as a commercial and later industrial location in the wake of the emerging mining industry in the Ore Mountains in the 16th century. Supported primarily by coal mining in western Saxony, Chemnitz developed into one of the most important centres of German mechanical engineering and the textile industry in the 19th century. During this period, Chemnitz was also known as Little Manchester or Rußchemnitz. In the 1920, it was a leading city in the European textile market. Auto Union (today Audi) was founded 1932 in Chemnitz. In the 1930s, the three busiest squares in the Greater German Reich were Potsdamer Platz in Berlin, Stachus in Munich and Johannisplatz in Chemnitz, of which nothing remains today except the name. Its economic importance made Chemnitz a primary target for Allied air forces during the Second World War, resulting in the city being almost completely destroyed in February 1945. Even after the Second World War and the reconstruction of the destroyed industrial plants, Chemnitz remained one of the most important industrial centres in the GDR, the East German state founded in 1949.. On 10 May 1953, the city was renamed by decision of the East German government to Karl-Marx-Stadt (Karl Marx City) after Karl Marx, in recognition of its industrial heritage and the Karl Marx Year marking the 135th anniversary of his birth and the 70th anniversary of his death. After the city centre was destroyed in World War II, the East German authorities attempted to rebuild it to symbolise the conceptions of urban development of a socialist city. The historic layout of the city centre at that time was rejected in favour of a new road network. However, the original plans were not completed.. After the peaceful revolution of 1989 in the GDR, but still before the German reunification, a referendum on the future name of the city was held on 23 April 1990, : 76% of the voters voted for the old name "Chemnitz". On 1 June 1990, the city was officially renamed. After the reunification of Germany on 3 October 1990, the city of Chemnitz faced several difficult tasks. Many inhabitants migrated to the former West Germany and unemployment in the region increased sharply..Since than, the layout of the city centre has been changed fundamentally with the collaboration of renowned international architects Most of its industry is now gone and the core of the city has been rebuilt with many shops as well as huge shopping centres. . Chemnitz has had to reinvent itself, like so many times before in its long history. This process has led to ithe election of the city as one of the two Capitals of European Culture in 2025.

RMS Titanic was a British passenger liner that sank in the North Atlantic Ocean on 15 April 1912 after colliding with an iceberg during her maiden voyage from Southampton, England to New York City. The sinking of Titanic caused the deaths of 1,514 people in one of the deadliest peacetime maritime disasters in history. She was the largest ship afloat at the time of her maiden voyage. One of three Olympic class ocean liners operated by the White Star Line, she was built between 1909–11 by the Harland and Wolff shipyard in Belfast. She carried 2,224 people.
Her passengers included some of the wealthiest people in the world, as well as over a thousand emigrants from Britain, Ireland, Scandinavia and elsewhere seeking a new life in North America. The ship was designed to be the last word in comfort and luxury, with an on-board gymnasium, swimming pool, libraries, high-class restaurants and opulent cabins. She also had a powerful wireless telegraph provided for the convenience of passengers as well as for operational use. Though she had advanced safety features such as watertight compartments and remotely activated watertight doors, she lacked enough lifeboats to accommodate all of those aboard. Due to outdated maritime safety regulations, she carried only enough lifeboats for 1,178 people – a third of her total passenger and crew capacity.
After leaving Southampton on 10 April 1912, Titanic called at Cherbourg in France and Queenstown (now Cobh) in Ireland before heading westwards towards New York. On 14 April 1912, four days into the crossing and about 375 miles south of Newfoundland, she hit an iceberg at 11:40 pm (ship's time; UTC-3). The glancing collision caused Titanic's hull plates to buckle inwards in a number of locations on her starboard side and opened five of her sixteen watertight compartments to the sea. Over the next two and a half hours, the ship gradually filled with water and sank. Passengers and some crew members were evacuated in lifeboats, many of which were launched only partly filled. A disproportionate number of men – over 90% of those in Second Class – were left aboard due to a "women and children first" protocol followed by the officers loading the lifeboats. Just before 2:20 am Titanic broke up and sank bow-first with over a thousand people still on board. Those in the water died within minutes from hypothermia caused by immersion in the freezing ocean. The 710 survivors were taken aboard from the lifeboats by the RMS Carpathia a few hours later.
The disaster was greeted with worldwide shock and outrage at the huge loss of life and the regulatory and operational failures that had led to it. Public inquiries in Britain and the United States led to major improvements in maritime safety. One of their most important legacies was the establishment in 1914 of the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS), which still governs maritime safety today. Many of the survivors lost all of their money and possessions and were left destitute; many families, particularly those of crew members from Southampton, lost their primary bread-winners. They were helped by an outpouring of public sympathy and charitable donations. Some of the male survivors, notably the White Star Line's chairman, J. Bruce Ismay, were accused of cowardice for leaving the ship while people were still on board, and they faced social ostracism.
The wreck of the Titanic remains on the seabed, gradually disintegrating at a depth of 12,415 feet (3,784 m). Since its rediscovery in 1985, thousands of artefacts have been recovered from the sea bed and put on display at museums around the world. Titanic has become one of the most famous ships in history, her memory kept alive by numerous books, films, exhibits and memorials.
Belfast has opened the Iconic Titanic Signature Building which will house Titanic Belfast ® it is iconic in design and houses a world class visitor attraction. It is located at Titanic Quarter (East Belfast). The exhibition is based on the theme of the Titanic and the wider subject of Belfast’s shipbuilding and maritime heritage. Of such scale, the building is likely to become Northern Ireland’s largest and most successful built attraction.
A symbolic statue made by world-renowned Irish sculptor Rowan Gillespie has been unveiled at Titanic Belfast.
‘Titanica’, a female figure designed to represent hope and positivity.
Gillespie has had work commissioned across the world, from Moscow to LA, but Titanica is his first work in Northern Ireland.
Titanica has been placed on the plaza in front of the iconic Titanic Belfast building, the world’s largest Titanic visitor attraction which will formally open on Saturday.
The bronze sculpture with a high-bolted brass base is a life-size female figure, similar to female figureheads which historically rested on the bows of ships as a symbol of good fortune.
Gillespie said: “I visited Titanic Quarter early last year and was so inspired by the stunning architecture and the energy of the development and the construction working there that I was moved to make something special for the area.
“I spent the next 12 months working on the sculpture and it is a real honour to have my work displayed in front of Titanic Belfast, one of the most impressive architectural designs in Europe. I hope Titanica provides as much joy for those who see her as I had in making her.”
The fancy establishment the two parties had agreed to meet at, had more than once been home to sinister negotiations and shady bargains, and Mayne and Valny had decided to uphold at least that one tradition. After all, the restaurant was full of witnesses should the meeting go sideways.

The St Kilda Botanical Gardens are a very beautiful place to visit, not least for all for their wonderful array of roses found in the Alister Clarke Rose Garden.
"Best Friend" is a variety of hybrid tea rose created by the famous French rose breeders Meilland International Roses. Described as stylish, classic rose of great beauty and richness, "Best Friend" has vibrant blooms of deep, hot plum pink. Being a hybrid tea rose they have a strong sweet perfume. "Best Friend" was named by the RSPCA to honour the unconditional special friendship that comes from loving a pet.
The site of the St Kilda Botanical Gardens were established in the 1800's. The municipal council petitioned the Department of Lands and Survey to make this segment of land bordered by Dickens Street, Tennyson Street and Blessington Street a Botanic Garden. The gardens were formally established in 1859 when a boundary fence was erected. By 1907 significant donations of money and plant material had led to the establishment of a rosary, extensive flower beds and a nursery. Exotic forest trees were planted during the 1870s and Australian species were included in 1932. In the 1950s the Alister Clarke Rose Garden was established and a Sub-Tropical Rain-forest conservatory added in the early 1990's.

There's a French bakery in the heart of Spanish Harlem called La Tropezienne. It was started by a French man who had passed away, as his picture is hung lovingly on a side of the wall. The bakery was left in the care of his late Japanese-American wife, who had an eye for renovation; leaving the place looking less dingy and more like a classical patisserie. When you walk into this tiny establishment there are only two tables and they are always taken. There's an upholstered bench attached to one wall, but that's also always full of visitors downing their coffees and treats. You're greeted by workers, who are Harlem locals and don't speak a lick of French. The bakery is fragrant with fresh baguettes and you're met with a colorful array of luscious pastries and cakes and even special dishes like Ratatouille. In Spanish Harlem, you can find Ratatouille here. That's mind-blowing. Of course, my personal favorite at La Tropezienne are the French Fruit Tarts. The berries are always sweet and succulent with a hint of sour and milkiness from the cream, and then there's the soft crumb graham crust to finish it off. I live for it and If you're in the area, do drop by for a visit! That experience is the energy I channeled creating this for Second Life. Something French but also New York but also flavors that any global taste palette can not only appreciate but crave. I hope you enjoy it. Bon appetit!
Find the French Fruit Tart from your favorite Second Life bistro boutique at the equal10 event starting March 10th, 12 PM SLT and at the main store after the event.

For a dining establishment so prominent in DCA that they offer a TOUR of their operation, I wish their restaurant menu bore more resemblance to a normal Boudin Bakery than what they have...

Boracay is a small island in the Philippines located approximately 315 km (196 mi) south of Manila and 2 km off the northwest tip of Panay Island in the Western Visayas region of the Philippines. Boracay Island and its beaches have received awards from numerous travel publications and agencies. The island is administered by the Philippine Tourism Authority and the provincial government of Aklan. Apart from its white sand beaches, Boracay is also famous for being one of the world's top destinations for relaxation. It is also emerging among the top destinations for tranquility and nightlife.
White Beach, the main tourism beach, is about four kilometres long and is lined with resorts, hotels, lodging houses, restaurants, and other tourism-related businesses. In the central portion, for about two kilometres, there is a footpath known as the Beachfront Path separating the beach itself from the establishments located along it. North and south of the Beachfront Path, beachfront establishments do literally front along the beach itself.
Boracay was awarded as the 2012 best island in the world from the international travel magazine Travel + Leisure. In 2016, the resort island was at the top of the Best Islands in the World list published by the international magazine Condé Nast Traveler

Become a psychedelic flower of the trance-human revolution, an anti-christ-establishment cult-ural phenomenon. Enjoy a cataclysmic decline in human cognition due to a dehumanized zombie like state of mindless conformity as you embrace your electronic slavery. Participate in the new social norms of deviant social evolution while in your brand new altered state of consciousness. The hypnotic patterns of synchronized antichrist frequencies producing rhythmic motor patterns in the absence of your sensory inputs will control you like a robot. How exhilarating!
Will you become a flower child of the Fourth Industrial Revolution? Will you be a budding flower of transhumanism—a bloom, a hybrid, a child of the Beast? Don’t forget your passport; grab your Digital ID and head toward the goal, toward the Mark. Immortality is waiting; it is waiting until Judgment Day, when you will receive your just reward of eternal punishment. Your pedals will be plucked off. You will wilt and fade away, no longer to be remembered. Your fragrance will smell of fire, your aroma of sulfur.

The establishment on the right is one of a chain of restaurant/deli's in New York called "Cosi." I guess they must serve coffee and croissants, etc -- because this photo was taken at 8:35 AM, which means it was far to early for them to be serving lunch.

I spent the first two weeks of September 2015 on a river cruise down the Rhine River, with daily visits to ancient (German) castles and small (German) villages along the way. Our trip culminated in Berlin (pictures forthcoming over the next week or so), where we stayed in a terrific hotel in what was once East Berlin … but was no longer distinguishable from any other part of Berlin …
Anyway, I thought it might be helpful to know a few German words and phrases besides what little I remembered from four years of high-school German, taken a lifetime ago… so I signed up for a one-week intensive one-on-one German class at the Berlitz school in mid-town Manhattan. I’m not sure how much I really learned, and I doubt that I’ll remember very much at all in a month or two … but I do think it was a worthwhile exercise.
The “exercise” involved daily trips, via subway, from Manhattan's Upper West Side to the IRT station at 50th Street and Seventh Avenue — from which I walked a couple blocks east to the Berlitz location near Rockefeller Center. When the class was over each day, I retraced my steps to get back home.
Naturally, I had my camera with me while I made this daily journey; and I couldn’t help snapping a few photos along the way. Most of the people that I saw were tourists … but there were a few “native” New Yorkers, and a few others of dubious origin.
Not the greatest photos in the world, I’m sure … but it shows you another “slice of life” in the Big Apple.
The establishment of the Roman settlement of Aventicum, which became the capital of the province, took place around 15-13 B.C. The name comes from the Helvetian spring goddess Aventia. After patronage by the emperor Vespasian, Aventicum soon developed into a blooming commercial center with over 20,000 inhabitants. (wikipedia) There are still amazing Roman ruins in Avenches, Switzerland, including this amphitheater. I also visited the Roman museum that is next to the amphitheather here.

Since the establishment of the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad in the late 1980s, one of the more popular photo spots on the line has been this old Cumberland & Pennsylvania Bridge #2 (MP 180.4). Unfortunately, it's in a pretty heavily wooded area and keeping the spot suitable for photography has been a continual challenge. That has especially been true since Western Maryland Locomotive #734 went down for major maintenance several years ago, and there had been no photo events here in some time.
For 2022, with the former C&O 2-6-6-2 #1309 now in service on the line, crews from Trains Magazine and Lerro Photography have really been busy in the past year with the brush hogs and they've really opened the spot nicely once again. So, for the November, 2022 photo shoot, organized by Trains Magazine, we not only had a nicely-manicured spot from which to take this photo, but mother nature also rewarded us with clearing skies and bright fall sun. Wouldn't you know it, when Locomotive 1309 arrived with her coal train, she came through almost completely clean stack.....on BOTH runbys. :o(
