Sometimes I establish some photography goals that are simply based upon “can I get that” as opposed to that would make a good photograph rationale. In this case, it was the former. Ron Bielefeld, the most capable bird photographer I know, took a wonderful picture of a Pectoral Sandpiper, which puffs out its chest when calling in flight. After I saw his image, I wanted one of my own. We frequently heard the species on the tundra as it makes a very distinctive “woop woop” sound when flying. I called it the Woop Woop bird and was on alert hoping to get a shot of it while calling. Finally, on our last day of shooting, one flew toward me giving me this shot of it’s puffed out chest. Established in the 1880’s by a community of Finnish fishermen, Finn sits in the intertidal zone near Steveston British Columbia Canada. Today it’s a small community of roughly 30 residents who have chosen to live on the river in these ramshackle homes that have electricity but no plumbing. Residents are a mix including a university professor, building contractor, music teacher, child care worker, a farmer and a number of artists. The village is heavily photographed and appears on postcards in many Vancouver souvenir shops. Despite the fact that the village has existed for over 100 years, a land developer has made attempt to evict the community in order to fill in the slough and build condos on the location.

Seen in the arboretum in Rogów :)

The Rogów Arboretum, established in 1925, is the Station of Protection and Shaping of Forest Ecosystems. It covers an area of 54 ha and is of an exceptional character as compared with other centers of the type in Poland or Europe, because it has been built from the very beginning as a research – didactic object and, moreover, it was located in the forest and has been tightly connected with the forest experimental study from the moment of its origin. The Arboretum consists of three basic parts: the dendrological collections (about 22 ha), the forest experimental plots (about 18 ha) and the alpine garden (1.5 ha).

The dendrological collections that is tree and shrub individuals planted either separately or in groups or small area forms, are mainly concentrated in the central and southern part of the Arboretum, covering a total of 2350 species and varieties. The Arboretum’s specialty is its collection of maples and shrubs from China. This segment is managed naturally, having the look of more a forest park than a typical botanical garden. The trees give the shelter and the proper microclimate for the introduced trees and shrubs.

W rogowskim alpinarium można obejrzeć ponad 400 gatunków i odmian roślin, pochodzących z gór całego świata. W większości są to byliny, ale nie tylko. Rosną tu także krzewy i drzewa terenów górzystych, np. majestatyczne świerki serbskie, kształtne limby czy srebrzyste jodły kalifornijskie.

Isotta Fraschini quickly established a reputation for innovation and high-quality craftsmanship. Its legacy is often attributed to its eight-cylinder luxury cars built during the 1920s, but it was many years earlier that the company forged its reputation for motor racing. Leading the charge in the engineering department was Giustino Cattaneo who developed the Tipo I Corsa in 1907, which competed at the Coppa Florio that year and emerged victoriously. A year later, in modified form, it won the Targa Florio. Following these victories, Isotta Fraschini designed a high-performance, lightweight, road-going car called the Tipo FE Voiturette. Several high-horsepower models followed and were particularly popular with U.S.-based enthusiasts.

The United States market was important to Isotta Fraschini and they made considerable efforts to promote their cars, most often through racing endeavors. In 1908, placed second in the Vanderbilt Cup, and were victorious in several other events including the Briarcliff Trophy, Savannah Trophy, and the Lowell Cup. In preparation for the Indianapolis 500, Isotta Fraschini Motor Co. of New York commissioned the Tipo IM. Six examples were built in the spring of 1913, wearing designs inspired by the KM and TM models.

The Isotta Fraschini Tipo IM was powered by an aircraft-inspired overhead cam, a 16-valve engine with a revised bore and stroke ratio, and a displacement size of 7,238 cubic centimeters. Its 7.2-liter displacement allowed it to comply with the limit set for American racing events. The 135 horsepower produced at 2,350 RPM was sent to the rear wheels via a four-speed manual gearbox. Another advanced feature was the four-wheel braking system. The suspension was comprised of a solid front and a live rear axle with semi-elliptical leaf springs all around.

As production was winding down, production was delayed due to a strike at the factory. Despite the setbacks, the factory was able to fulfill its American contracts. The cars were sent to Le Havre, France, and loaded onto the Lusitania on April 29th. They arrived in New York on May 24th and were sent to Indianapolis by express train, just in time to participate in qualifying sessions.

The 1913 Indianapolis 500 was the third year of the event, and it was the substantial monetary rewards that attracted U.S. and European factory-backed teams. The Isotta Fraschini team had the most modern and sophisticated machinery that they were capable of producing, and the lineup of drivers was equally impressive, consisting of Targa Florio winner Vincenzo Trucco, American racer 'Terrible' Teddy Tetzlaff, and two-time Vanderbilt Cup winner Harry Grant. Ray Gilhooley was hired as the relief driver, and he was lent a Tipo KM, which he drove prior to the start of the race in exhibition laps.

In the end, it was the lack of preparation and fine-tuning that proved to be the Achilles Heel of the Tipo IM's effort, having been prepared during the midst of the labor strike. The demise of all three cars was attributed to minor mechanical issues, with Grant leaving on Lap 14 due to a split gas tank. Trucco had the same issue but his car held up to Lap 39 before he bowed out of the race. Tetzlaff's carried the torch for Isotta Fraschini through lap 118 when a broken drive chain ended his day.

The car driven by Tetzlaff returned to Indianapolis 500 a year later and was entrusted to Ray Gilhooley. On Lap 41, the Isotta suffered a tire blowout in Turn 3, which ensnared the drive chain. The car spun wildly and ejected the driver and riding mechanic in the process, eventually coming to a stop on tires in the infield.

In many ways, these were the end and pinnacle of an era, and at the same time gave a glimpse into the future. The chain drive system was archaic and the front wheel brakes were thoroughly modern. Had they not succumbed to mechanical issues, it would have been interesting how history would have recorded their accomplishments at Indy.

Established in 1885, the La Follette Cemetery has 191 graves. Far more people are buried here than currently live in the area. Several babies without names are commemorated. The majority of burials occurred before 1920, although at least two people have been interned since the early 2000s.

Mayfield was established in 1984, initially as a sheep farm. The heart of the property has been gradually transformed – with the help of talented local landscapers and tradespeople – from bare paddocks into one of the largest, privately owned cool climate gardens in the world. Mayfield has been inspired by the magnificent gardens of Europe. Owned by the Hawkins family, Mayfield Garden (open 363 days of the year) and The Hawkins’ Family Garden, together, cover more than 64 hectares (160 acres). While the garden represents one family’s dream, the long-term vision is that it will be enjoyed by people from near and far for generations to come. 43490

The Monastery at Lébény was established between 1199 and 1203, by a nobleman, for private worship. The complex was dedicated to the Apostle Saint James the Great. Though the existing charter for approving the donations and construction was signed by Andreas II (1208), one of the walls of the church had “1206” engraved in them, which may indicate that the church was already built at that time. It is also mentioned in the RegestrumVaradiense (an important language memorial), which was made in the late cathedral chapter of the present Oradea (Nagyvárad) in the 13th century. The monastery of Lébény was attacked and burnt down several times; the first by Mongols, then the second by King Ottokar I of Bohemia; and thereafter by the Turks, which was probably in 1529 and definitely in 1683. The monastery was taken back from the Turks by the arch-abbot of Pannonhalma in 1540. He named a new abbot, though the title only existed on paper for a little bit longer than two decades. In 1563 the monastery was burnt down again for the third time and was left devoured. Presently, the only part of the complex that is still standing is the iconic three-nave Romanesque church in the middle of Lébény village. This church is one of the most important Romanesque style buildings of Hungary, which was most probably restored in the 17th century by the Jesuits, and it was the first ever Hungarian monument that was restored in the second half of the 19th century. In addition, the Romanesque church is also operating as a parish of the village.

Established in 1966, the Coorong National Park is a spectacular saline lagoon stretching 140km along the south east coast of South Australia. The National Park is separated from the Southern Ocean by sand dunes of the Younghusband Peninsula, and is internationally significant under the Ramsar agreement as a migratory wader and waterfowl refuge.

I drove across salt flats that lay between the coast and the dunes. The salt flats are sometimes submerged, the road is nothing more than a path across the salt bed. Four wheel drive vehicles can traverse the salt flat all year round, the road is marked with red topped posts, without which the landscape is featureless.

The Coorong is a wonderland of bird life and unique vegetation. I took this shot on the road crossing the salt flats.

Established in 1918, it stands restored on the dry, Albertan prairie.

Established in 1962, the Clark Library has become one of the major art reference and research libraries in the country. Focusing on post-medieval European and American art, the collection is outstanding in the fields of Italian and Northern Renaissance, Baroque, and nineteenth-century French art, and the history of photography. The Library’s resources include approximately 270,000 books, bound periodicals, and auction sales catalogues.

Pine Island Sound is located in Lee County, Florida, lying between Pine Island and the barrier islands of Sanibel Island, Captiva Island, North Captiva Island and Cayo Costa, which separate the Sound from the Gulf of Mexico. The Sound connects to Gasparilla Sound and Charlotte Harbor to the north, and to San Carlos Bay and the Caloosahatchee River to the south. The Sound is conterminous with the Pine Island Sound Aquatic Preserve, which was established in 1970 and consists of 54,000 acres (220 km2) of submerged land. Important habitats in the Sound include mangroves, seagrasses, salt marshes, oyster communities and tidal flats.

For thousands of years, the sound was home to the Calusa Indians and their ancestors. In the 18th and 19th centuries it was an important winter fishery for the Cuban mullet fleet. In the early 1960s, in preparation for the Bay of Pigs Invasion, the CIA trained some Cuban exiles on Useppa Island, located in the center of the sound.

The impressive central atrium of one of the oldest shopping centre in London, Peter Jones. The original Peter Jones shop was established in Sloane Square by a Welsh draper in the 1870s. The actual renovation of the building has been done while customers carried on shopping to avoid a long time closure that would have caused a loss in staff and costumers to rivals. Watching this image I could not help but think of the infernal circles of Dante!

The comapny Dolata was established in 1998, but it wasn't until 2018 that they expanded to the railway. They started in Dąbrowa (near Poznań) as a gravel/aggregates mine and sorting facility. Now they also do transports and produce concrete. The name comes from the company owner - Agnieszka Dolata.

The expansion to the rails happened (afaik) in 2018 and BR232-789 was the first class 232 locomotive to receive Dolata's black and silver livery. The company currently has a railway operations base in Szamotuły (also near Poznań), where they repair their sizeable fleet, now consisting of a couple of 232 and TEM2 locomotives (additionally - they own an ex-PKP ST44 locomotive, but there are no plans of bringing it back to life).

On a foggy November morning, while visiting my family in Rokietnica, I made my way to the local railway station and snapped this picture of Dolata's first 232 at the aggregate siding near the station. Since then, the station has had a substantial overhaul and the siding has ceased existing.

St. Paschal Baylon Catholic Church was established on October 1, 1957 by His Eminence James C. Cardinal McGuigan, Archbishop of Toronto. The parish was entrusted to the Missionaries of St. Charles (Scalabrinians), a congregation founded by St. John Baptist Scalabrini, whose mission is to serve migrants with compassion and faith.

The parish was founded by two dedicated Scalabrinian priests, Fr. Vincent Lo Savio, C.S., and Fr. Ralph Villella, C.S., who began ministering to the growing community of Italian immigrants in the Thornhill area.

While the church building was still under construction, Masses were celebrated at Veteran’s Hall, providing a temporary spiritual home for the faithful. During this time, the Italian community—many of whom were skilled tradespeople—came together to lay the foundation stone of the church and contribute their labor and devotion to building the parish.

The parish is named for St. Paschal Baylon (1540–1592), a Spanish Franciscan brother renowned for his deep love of the Blessed Sacrament. He is the patron saint of Eucharistic congresses and societies, inspiring the parish’s Eucharistic-centered life and mission.

To this day the furthering of this ministry exemplifies the parish’s ongoing commitment to the Scalabrinian charism of welcoming migrants of all backgrounds.

-

The interior of the church could have been further illuminated photographically but with four of the ornate overhead lamps left on and the rest of the light coming through uniquely stylized stained glass the atmosphere has a kind of golden hour aspect which I decided to simply naturalize in a way

- - - At any rate, I want to say it is in every way healthy to be thankful for a service attitude.

Simply being able to find within oneself the need to be of service is a furthering that contributes to determining the natural position of strength on any platform.

It can be said one has surpassing needs on the mental platform alone of course but of course there is accessible variegation that is -pervasively - necessary in reality the inevitable and of course surpassing all strata of consciousness - namely sensual, mental and intellectual - there is the sheer spirit of determination. ॐ

During the Soviet time the building was used as a hotel. The hall on the left from the main entrance served as a cinema.

In the years 1995-1997 it was radically restored the Madrasa.

With her measuring of 69 × 80 metres is the Koʻkaldosh-Madrasa also the biggest building of the ensemble Labi Hovuz and the biggest Madrasa of Buxoro and belongs to biggest from Central Asia. The main facade has a central Pischtak with Iwan. On both sides of the Pischtaks three axes of 2-storey sharp curve arcades with accesses to the single residential cells of the students join. The Hotel Gellért is a historic Art Nouveau hotel established in 1918 and located on the west bank of the Danube in Budapest, Hungary.

The hotel closed for renovations on December 1, 2021 and is scheduled to reopen in 2027 as Mandarin Oriental Gellert, Budapest.

Construction on the Hotel Saint Gellért started in April 1911. The hotel was named for Saint Gellért (St. Gerard Sagredo) the first bishop of Hungary in the 11th Century. The 176-room hotel was designed by Hungarian architects Ármin Hegedűs, Artúr Sebestyén and Izidor Sterk. Work on the hotel slowed due to World War I, and it did not open until 26 September 1918, just as the war was ending and the Austro-Hungarian Empire was descending into chaos.

The hotel was commandeered for military use throughout 1919, during the Aster Revolution. Once Hungary was established as an independent country, the hotel proved so financially successful that it was expanded in 1927 with 60 more guest rooms and an outdoor artificial wave pool built on the site of the hotel's gardens. Noted Hungarian restaurateur Károly Gundel took over management of the hotel's restaurants in 1927 as well. In 1934, the "thermal bath" was added, in place of the hotel's glass-domed Winter Garden.

The hotel remained open throughout most of World War II, until it closed on 26 December 1944, as the Siege of Budapest began. It was bombed out and largely destroyed in January 1945. The wave pool reopened in summer 1945. Post-war Communist authorities removed the "St." from the hotel's name and it became the Hotel Gellért. The Gellért Hill wing of the hotel reopened on 26 March 1946, with 50 rooms, using the baths entrance on Kelenhegyi Street. The hotel's first guests were Danish relief workers bringing food aid. The hotel's Marble Room restaurant reopened soon after, on 20 August 1946, just after the new currency, the forint had been introduced, to stabilize the Hungarian economy.

The restaurants leased by the Gundel family were nationalized in 1948, after which the entire establishment was state-owned and operated. The main Danube River wing of the hotel was rebuilt starting in 1956 and was officially reopened in 1960. While the facade was restored to its pre-war appearance, the hotel's interiors were rebuilt in a modern style. In 1972, the Gellért Hill wing, which had not been part of the 1956-1960 renovations, was completely reconstructed.

Danubius Hotels assumed management of the hotel in 1981. After the company was privatized in 1992, it purchased the hotel outright in June 1996 and it became the Danubius Hotel Gellért.

On June 24, 2019, Danubius sold the hotel to Indotek, an investment group, which announced plans to renovate and restore the Gellért and reposition it as a five-star luxury hotel, under the management of an international chain. The hotel closed for renovations on December 1, 2021 and ceased to be operated by Danubius Hotels at that point. Indotek sold the shuttered hotel to BDPST Group in December 2022.

On December 22, 2023, it was announced that the hotel will be operated by the Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group as the Mandarin Oriental Gellert, Budapest when it reopens in 2027. Design work will be done by London-based Alexander Waterworth Interiors Ltd. The historic Main Lobby, Danube Room, Music Room and Tapestry Room will be restored to their original state, based on historic photographs and plans. The remainder of the building will house 143 rooms, including 38 suites.
